Ken Salter is the author of the popular utility FSAutostart. It will shut down the Windows rubbish you don't need / want running while you are Flight Simming. Ken has released a sequel to FSAutostart called AlacrityPC, link above. I stumbled across it by accident and have not used it yet myself, but thought I'd let the Community know about it as it looks like it handles Vista as well as XP, 98 etc.  Sorry Death, you lose!
