is it true that only the Aim7 and the R27R, R27ER and R27M requires lock to be kept for the missile to track?

The ONLY radar guided air to air missiles that are ACTIVE (self guiding) are the R77 and the AMRAAM.

(On flyable planes)

hmm ... could be.

But you may have forgotten one. I'm not going to check though because konkussion already put it efficiently enough.

Yes that's true.

i cant seam to jugde weather the R27T and R27ET is fire and forget or it requires lock to be kept. seams like sometimes it tracks by itself while other times it needs lock..also ive had people tell me both things is true... how does it work...

From large distance i think it's best to keep lock for as long as possible.
This goes for all self guiding missiles.

The missile only has a very small scan radius so if your fired missile does not go after target, it has lost the target and it will most likely not re-aquire it because of the small scan radius.

does this mean that it is also radar guided till it reaches closer to the target, like the Aim120

Yes i think so .

However i think that the IR missiles do go active once launched right away, you can also guide them with your plane all the way to the target.

The R-77 and AIM-120 should not go active right of at launch, but i could have sworn i've seen aim-120's go after a target right away without me ever locking the target.

I guess you could test this with the mission editor.

you can launch Aim120's in visual mode which is by hitting 2(BVR, or 6(flood for aim7) which will put your Aim120 into visual mode. this uses the missiles own seeker to find target. if you are unable to lock up your target, maybe due to ground clutter, just fire the missile in the general direktion and hope that the missiles own seeker finds the target and it will start to track.
works a bit like Flood mode except you dont have to keep pointing your radar at the target.

dont think R77 can do the same.

If you're talking about an IR guided missile- NO. Once locked, AN IR missile will go after that target on it's own, but it IS subject to interference from any heat source that happens to come into the seeker's "view". Including the sun, terrain, (like hot desert sand) another aircraft with a hotter signature-- no matter who it is- and others..

There was a documented situation in which- on an oppressively, terribly hot day, even for that area(Kuwait, I think)- an A10 pilot acquired, but was unable to maintain a sidewinder lock onto a chopper because the heat plumes simply blended into the surrounding air, terrain, etc.. the missile couldn't distinguish it enough to track. So he simply came back around, lined up and put about 200 rounds of 30MM DU in that sunuvabitch. I think this was the first A2A guns kill for an A10 pilot. That gun did more damage to that aircraft than the ground did when it hit.. Metal
