Hi all

I have created a mission in order to experiment with the f-15 radar in order to better understand its use. I have several friendlies at varying BRA's and am successfully targeting and locking them all except one.

Its an F-5 12 o'clock, 25 miles at the same alt (7000') flying in the same direction as me, i.e. I'm looking up his tailpipe. My radar cannot see him no matter what I do, is this because of his low aspect? I notice changing the aircraft to a larger type solves the problem e.g a C17.

If thats the case is there anyway to point the radar at him and alter its sensitivity due to his low aspect? I thought I read somewhere how to do this but can't find it now.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Most likely the doppler effect- i.e. there needs to be a certain measurable closure rate to not be filtered out by the system. If you are traveling at similar speeds, the contact could be filtered out as clutter. This behavior can be exasperated by the ground if you are looking down at the contact.

Also- keep in mind that the modeling here is VERY basic, and NOT representative of the real thing's capabilities...

The key to flying is to throw yourself at the ground, and miss..

I agree ----sometimes I think we expect to much from a sim. A sim is just a game that approximates real life. The programmers have done a marvelous job simulating real life ---- but it is still just graphics and mathematics.

The F-5 seems to be one of the toughest jets on which to get a radar lock. No idea if it is in real life, but certainly is in Lockon.

Hi Again

Thanks for the replies. It was indeed doppler effect causing the issue. I edited the mission this time putting the F-5 on a head on course with my aircraft and had no trouble painting him at 50 miles.
