I've noticed that the airspeed shown on the HUD is different to the airspeed shown when in external view. So which one is correct, or are they both correct and just using different units? The reason is because I'm testing out corner velocity and want a reading in km/h.
I'm testing the Su-27. Does its HUD display airspeed in km/h? |

The HUD in the SU-27 is displayed in km/h.
never checked if it's shows thesame speed in the external view. Also I'm not sure, but maybe you can set it under options? But SU-27 should be km/h. Best regards, Fattyrat. |

Not to be an a@s about this, but you can stick to one forum with these questions, really. They will most likely get answered by the SAME people anyways. And again, they are BOTH correct as the cockpit measurements are taken in what your measurment system is, externals is always metric.

Things to consider.
If you have OPTIONS set to metric then external view speed will be Km/h, if OPTIONS set to Imperial you will have External view speed set in Knots. But there is more to it than that. What you will see in the HUD of your Su-27 will ALWAYS be in Km/h because you are in a Russian jet irrespective of what you set in OPTIONS. But what exactly are you seeing in your HUD? You are seeing Indicated Airspeed. What you see in the external view is, I think, True Airspeed (but might just be Ground Speed). The more you climb, then the higher your True Airspeed is compared to your Indicated Airspeed - the air is thinner. Sorry Death, you lose! It was Professor Plum.... |

Is everyone sure it is TAS? Its always looked like km/h to me in F2 view.

It is km/h in the external view, but it is also Ground Speed.

I picked a mission (Su-27 quick fly) that starts you at altitude (3,000m), paused straight away, checked HUD speed (420km/h), checked the F2 view TAS speed (498km/h). Exited and changed OPTIONS to be imperial. Repeat. HUD speed still 420km/h, F2 view speed was now 270 knots.
Used Mission Editor to add a 50m/s wind into that mission. Repeated the experiment - HUD speed still 420km/h, F2 view speed still 498km/h(metric) or 270 knots (imperial) so must be TAS not Ground Speed. Did this quick test on my v1.02 installation. Sorry Death, you lose! It was Professor Plum.... |

Please see my reply in the thread at LockonFiles. The units in both the ME and F2 status bar are selectable. You can set them to either Metric or Imperial. Rich |
