I'm having a lot of trouble understanding engagement in LOMAC. I understand that there are two engagement distances. RTR "range turn run" and the RPI one. The thing is, what is the "best distance" to launch an AIM-120 AMRAAM?
Of course, that could be an ambiguous question, so what is the advantages of launching under RTR as opposed to RPI?

You should note that I'm trying to outrange my enemy as much as possible in BVR mode.

And has anyone had success in coordinating their missile attacks with their wingman so that you both launch missiles at the same time without target overlap?

Some folks like to lob a missile at a bandit pretty much as soon as they are in range. Not necessarily expecting to get a kill with it, more to force the bandit onto the defensive. Whilst he is trying to lose your 1st missile, you get in closer and kill him with a 2nd missile fired from a shorter range with a higher probability of getting a kill.

As for coordinated attacks with your wingnut, then you can lock up a bandit and issue the "attack my target" command using the radio command menu.
You can then fire on the same bandit if you wish to force that bandit to deal with two missiles.

Alternatively you can unlock from the 1st bandit, lock up a 2nd bandit and attack him instead so you are each attacking one bandit.

Expect very little success with your missiles outside of 12 miles. Of course this can depend on your speed and altitude to some extent.

The AIM-120 is much more effective at longer distances in Falcon 4. If you are use to flying that sim you have to lower your expectations in Lockon.

How realistic is this? I've heard that a real AMRAAM 120A/B has a range of 30-50 miles and an AMRAAM 120C about 65 miles. Yet here we're lobbing AMRAAMs at 12-20 miles tops...

And one more thing... the missile effectiveness slider...

If I'm going for the most accurate simulation, the closest I can get to real-world, where should that slider be?

If you want to start an argument then bring up the subject of missile effectiveness. Everyone has their own opinion of the correct maximum distance and effectiveness of air to air missiles.

I just had a successful AIM-120 HOJ shot at a Tu-95 from my F-15 (both aircraft travelling at max height and max speed in a head-on situation) from a range of 65.5 nm.

Based on that sort of range I picked a non-jamming big clumsy target - I chose the Russian A-50 Awacs. I got a firm lock from a good range and tried an AIM-120 shot even though I had no launch authorise lights. Again we were both at max speed and max height and head-on). Hit it from 63nm range.

Low density air makes a difference --as it should.

I have had 120 kills at 40 miles, but that hasn't happened to much. It also depends on who you are fighting against. Most kills will be under 12 miles as stated.

The slider should be at 50 or 100, anything other then that will cause problems with your missile hitting targets.
