I've got a few questions about our good friend, the missile! I've read a few posts about some missiles guiding themselves and was wondering which ones they where?
I know that the AIM-120C can guide itself but how close does it have to be to a bandit before it starts tracking it? So what I want to know is: 1) Which Russian/American missiles have a built in tracking radar? 2) Which Russian/American missiles are heat seekers? 3) Which Russian/American missiles have to be guided by you, to hit the bandit (i.e. no built in radar and no heat seeking capabilities)? 4) Could you maybe give me any other important/interesting info about the missiles? Thanks guys, hope you can help! |

1. R-77, Aim-120.
2, R-60, R-73, R-27ET (just look at the seeker head), Aim-9. 3. Rockets? Bullets? Bad Ejections? 4. If you fire one, you might kill things. R.I.P George Carlin: You knew how to make me laugh |

1. AIM-120C. Also R-77 but not in TWS mode.
2. All mentioned in Hitman's post and also R-27T. 3. AIM-7, R-27EM, R-27ER, R-27R. 4. Yes but it is too much to tell you about here even in brief. You can find majority in game manual. AMRAAM goes active at 15-20 km from target. The same should apply to R-77. Of course someone more experienced can rectify this data because that screwed-up game is often very far from reality. PS. It would be a good idea to make altitude versus range charts for each "human-controlled" A-A missile in the game and share them on this forum. |

I tried to add some R-77 missiles to my payload on one of the missions, but I couldn't find it. Anyone know how I can do it?
On a side note, it's a bummer that the American long range missile (AIM-120C) has active radar tracking but the Russian long range missile (R-27ER) doesn't |

This missile is only accessible on Russian MiG-29S fighter.
It is true because Russian active radar missiles weren't introduced before USSR break-up. Then Russians didn't have money to do so and thus they have been delivering only R-77's export version to other counties (i.e. China, India) since 1990s. Of course it is huge derision that RuAF doesn't have ARH missiles but it is sad reality correctly presented in LOFC... |

Just another quick question: which missile is best for a dogfight? I'm guessing the heat seekers since they're smaller and therefore can make tighter turns, and the heat source from the bandit would be very strong?

As for Russian planes it is definitely R-73. Next good choice is R-77 as being much more maneuverable than any of R-27 family. As for F-15C however I suggest AIM-120C over AIM-9 because Sidewinder has badly (and buggy!) short 5 km range in this game. |

What about when you're in a high G dogfight, within 2km of each other?

Use R-73 or AIM-120C or guns! In game crappy Sidewinder isn't by no means AIM-9X. It is some R-60M equivalent. Yet I don't fly F-15C much so ask anybody else for more details. One Eagle's guru is needed here! |
