Hello, does anybody know how to use the KH-41 missile that is included in the player SU33 payload for an antiship strike?I have tried to use it in a mission but when I press the 7 key for air to ground it does come up on the HUD but there doesn't seem to be any way of locking on to a target

First thing to know is that in real life, the Russian Navy never had the money to put the Kh-41 onto the Su-33 - it was planned to happen but never actually happened, nevertheless for fun, it was put into Lockon.

For the Kh-41 to work, first you have to set things up in the Mission Editor as follows...

Put in the ship you want to sink (Kh-41 is anti-ship, it wont fire at land targets).
Put in your Su-33, give it its payload and set up its waypoints. Set one of them to an ATTACK waypoint. Select the ATTACK waypoint, then press the TARGET button, select your victim ship as the target. If your victim ship is not one of the small ones, be prepared for your single Kh-41 missile to only damage but not sink it. Take a wingman also armed with Kh-41 or else add some dumb bombs to your own jet so you can finish it off. Save the mission and fly it.

When you are airborne, select 7 for air-to-ground, press I to switch on the air-to-ground radar (that was never fitted in real life), when in range you will get Launch Authorise (LA) in the HUD, fire that sucker!

If I forgot anything, I'm sure someone else will jump in. Hope this helps...

There is a Kh-41 tutorial here

http://www.dpsflight.com/Su33index.htm

There's also a video, but you might want to fast forward through the intro - unless you really like Russian music.

May I correct you there: it is not the Kh-41 that has been put on SU-33 for fun, it is the SU-33 that has been put on the Kh-41 for fun and Lock On does not simulate the correct launch and it's path correction as such and SU-33 with Kh-41in real life actually did happen and it was fixed to the plane (solid with nuts and bolts) and I even do belive that it was tested.
It may seem apperent that thay haven't got the money to fit Kh-41 on SU-33 or SU-32 but somehow thay manage to get it on other nations airforces.

All I can say about the missile from my view, is that Kh-41 belongs to Russias defence project and no trustworthy source can posibly tell you all about it i.e the number of missiles and how fust thay can be put into action because it's classified and still active.

There are articles out there that sweep up available info but in the end thay can't even come up with the same core figuers, however thay may refer to some genuine souces after all.

like this one: http://warfare.ru/?linkid=1687&catid=263&topics=true and http://warfare.ru/?linkid=1687&catid=263 (notice same site)

And on some other site I found an article wich was implying Crack Whip that Kh-41 project wasn't materialised due to the inpracticable operational load.
You might think: yeh right thay went thru all the trouble making it and than discovered that it weighs 4.5 ton or wouldn't it be wiser to say that the project didn't get materialised becouse it does not appear as nessesary for this day and age for some thing that might be considered as a waste of borrowed money.

O well there is always diferent views on that.

You can fire at ground targets as long as you designate them as targets.

It takes at least two of these missiles to knock out a large destroyer. Anything larger than that will take several more.

If you do not fire enough of them at your particular target (ship) it will just burn for a few minutes and then the fire will go out.

You are right ---most ships will shoot down the missile at about 2 or 3 miles out.

Gotta give me a little more info to work with mate Wink

Exactly what didn't work?

What height were you? The higher you are the bigger range it will fire from. At 5,000m, you'll get maybe 130km range?

When you pressed "7" (for ground attack) did you see GND and also KH-41 in bottom left of the HUD?

Did you see a diamond symbol in the HUD when your aircraft was pointing in the general direction of the victim ship?

When you pressed "I" did your HUD now have a "N" at the left side?

When you were within firing range, did you
see LA appear in the HUD?

Did you ever get LA in the HUD?

Did the missile fire but not hit the ship?

Did it fire and hit but not sink the ship?

If you want to, upload your mission somewhere on the InterNet so one of us can download it and see what might be wrong with it.

As can be noted from the above post ---this missile is essentially useless even when fired correctly. It takes to many missiles to sink all but the smallest ships and if the ship is larger than a patrol boat the missile will get shot down.

Why even use it ?? Find yourself something else to do with your time.
