Successors of Il-2 Sturmovik and Flanker 2.5

This is just a comparisson of the two sims that I recently acquired.

Il-2 Sturmovik 1946 & Lock On Gold (with Flaming Cliffs)

Controller compatibility:

1946 is more compatible with analogue game pad controllers than Lock On Gold.
I use a Radica Phoenix Revolution PS2 gamepad to control my planes in both programs and the control buttons are much easier to map in 1946.

http://www.radicagames.com/uk-phoenix-revolution.php

System Requirements:

Lock On needs a much more powerful rig to run than 1946 but both ran fine in my below mid-range machine with a few unnoticeable glitches experinced with Lock On definitely due to machine specs.

1946 System Requirements:
Operating System: Windows 98/ME/XP/2000
CPU: Pentium III or AMD Athlon 1GHz
RAM: 512 MB
Disc Drive: 4x DVD ROM Drive
Hard Drive: 4GB free hard drive space
Video Card: 64 MB DirectX 9.0 compatible - ATI Radeon 7500 or greater/nVidia GeForce 3 or greater (GeForce MX not supported)
Sound Card: DirectX 9.0 compatible sound card
Input Devices: Mouse and Keyboard

Lock On Gold System Requirements:
Operating System: Windows 2000/XP
CPU: Pentium 4 with 2GHz or equivalent
RAM: 512 MB of Ram
Disc Drive: 4X CD-ROM drive
Video Card: 128MB DirectX 8.0 compatible 3D card
Sound Card: DirectX 8.0 compatible sound card
Input Devices: mouse , keyboard
Others: Internet or LAN connection for online play

Machine Specs:
AMD Athlon64 3000+
MSI RS482M2-IL
ATI Radeon Xpress200
512MB DDR400 RAM
80GB SATA + 40GB EIDE HDD

Graphics:
Both games have very good graphical and modeling detail.
Very impressive as far as I am concerned.

Technical Accuracy:
Both games enjoy a high degree of technical accuracy but 1946 does have some "what if" elements because of its concept planes.
i.e. Heinkel Lerch, HE-162D, etc...

Gameplay:
Both sims are very enjoyable to play with.
One can joy ride a plane and just fly around while learning the controls.
Both have their own tutorials for those just getting familiar with the game.

Overall:
Well both games are very good & I'm happy to be a proud owner of these two games.

:-)

The system specs for LOMAC are incorrect. That is only what is stated on the box...it will play on a p3, but to get everything out of it youll need all of these:

Lock On Gold System Requirements:
Operating System: Windows 2000/XP
CPU: Intel Core 2 Quad with 2.4GHz or equivalent
RAM: 2 gB or bettter
Disc Drive: 54X CD-ROM drive
Video Card: 768mb DirectX 10 compatible 3D card
Sound Card: DirectX 8.0 compatible sound card
Power Supply: 1000w or better
Input Devices: mouse , keyboard, expensive HOTAS, TIR4 Pro, a cockpit, headset, rudder pedals, miocrophone, and cold beer
Others: Internet or LAN connection for online play

If you intend on eating lead paint chips, bring salsa.

IL-2 1946 as some more stuff to point out.

Teh damage on IL-2 is extremely detailed, u can have hundreds of different kind of damage and they all show on the graphic model. For example, you get your cockpit full of oil if someone shoots on the right place, also you can get your aiming thingy shot by a bullet throu the glass and that makes it much harder to aim.

The damage detail on is really awesome on Il2.

You can also crash land wherever you want and your plane doesnt blow up and makes a creater everything u touch the ground. Your plane actually slides and rolls arounds breaking several pieces of the aircraft.

Even if you hit the ground at high speeds and blow up, the pieces still have phisics and keep the trajectory.

You can land without gear ANYWHERE and have a "perfect" landing.

I know Lock-on has that kind of damage detail on newer versions on the new Frogfoot but im not sure about the other models.

Il2 Cockpit is fully 3D (or at least 90% is). On Lock-on it feels alot more like a Flat image on your face.

And so on.

However, i do love both games! Lock-On has so much detail and realism on the weapon systems, it has modern aircraft (wich was something i was looking for when i got bored of WWII planes).

I just wich Lock-on had as much updates as IL-2. Theres IL-2 Storm of War (or whatever the name is) coming out soon, and it looks fantastic.

When's the next Lock-on coming out? =/
I wish they would make another Lock-on with Ace Combat 6 Graphics and LOMAC Flaming Cliffs simulation detail. <3

no this is wrong... No cockpit in IL 2 is fully 3D... That is why they won´t allow 6dof with TrackIR Frown. Not sure if LOMAC allows it and thus appear to be less 3D then IL 2 Smile

One difference between IL-2 and Lockon is how easy it is to add more aircraft.

With WW2 aircraft, once you have the performance data and have made the external model and cockpit and some skins, they pretty much all have the same basic set of instruments in the cockpit, similar armament (some mix of machine guns / cannon) then it is not so different from any of the other existing aircraft in IL-2.

I would imagine that adding new aircraft in Lockon is a more complex task (otherwise they would have been coming out with revenue generating addons every few months) as you have to consider the radar, radar warning system, weapon systems etc.

Sorry Death, you lose! It was Professor Plum....

The cockpits in IL2 are definitely more 3D than in LOMAC but you'll need stereo 3D glasses to confirm that. Most of the switches and dials inside the 3D cockpit of a LoMac jet are just part of a 2D image.

In IL2 Sturmovik 1946, the opposite is true (due in no small part to the lack of buttons and switches in WWII aircraft compared to the more high tech planes of the poat WWII era).

There is a definite difference in the quality of cockpits within IL2 Sturmovik due to the gradual inclusion of more aircraft in successive patches - the Ju88, for example, looks better than the He111 probably because the latter was in the game right from the start and the former was added somewhat later.
