Perhaps not too surprising, since it's 10 years old now. But is there a way to make it work?? Begging for any help. I have combed through these posts and tried many of these things, though most of them are for the 10th Anniversary Edition and don't apply to me.
I have the following version of the game (from the readme file): Riven(tm): The Sequel to Myst® DVD-ROM v1.1 Windows®95 June 30, 1998 I am running: WinXP with all service packs DirectX 9.0c most updated video and sound drivers various Quicktimes (I have tried both 7.5.5 and the old version [3.0] that comes on the CD) What I have done: I put all .exe files on the DVD to Win95 compatibility just to make sure. I install the software, and everything copies to my drive just fine. At the end, it wants to install DirectX 5. If I say no, it says the installation is not complete and that DirectX 5 is required. Of course, I am unable to allow it to install DirectX 5 because I have a newer version. When I try to run the .exe (from the hard drive), I get the familiar flash-to-black, second-of-hourglass, then-back-to-desktop thing that everyone else gets. This persists through both Win95 and Win98 compatibility, with all iterations of the checkboxes attempted. I have changed the line in the mohawk.w32 file and I tried to run Riven Updater, but it said Riven was required and that it couldn't find it! I would greatly appreciate any help you may be able to give on this. Many thanks!!! This message has been edited. Last edited by: sevenveils, |

Welcome to the Riven forum.
You could delete the newer QuickTime version through the Add/delete program Files in your control Panel, install the DVD QT version, play Riven and when finished, you could delete the old version and reinstall the latest version. |

Thanks for the welcome!
Well, I have tried QT 3.0 (from the DVD), in fact that's what I have running right now! That's not the problem. It seems to me the problem is that it wants DirectX 5. Though I actually went to the trouble of getting rid of DirectX 9.0c and installing DirectX 5, and it didn't seem to install properly--the files were there in DxDiag, but it was listing me as not having DirectX installed at all. According to the installer, the installation isn't complete unless it installs DirectX 5. Very grateful for any suggestions from the master compatibility gurus..... Thanks! |

Please note that I'm in Houston and still digging out from Hurricane Ike, so I'll be a bit slower to respond to problems than normal.
******* In general, -- Install Riven to your C: drive, unless you have a very small C: that's reserved for system files only. If so, install Riven to D:. -- Always log into Windows with full Administrator privileges, and close all open applications before starting Riven. -- Never boot up with the Riven DVD in the drive, or with a disc in any drive if you have more than one drive. -- If the Riven DVD autostarts when inserted into the drive, cancel back to the Desktop. -- Always start Riven with the Desktop shortcut/start icon, not from the DVD menu. Try allowing DirectX 5 to be installed. The installer may determine that you have a later version of DirectX installed and allow you to cancel without aborting the entire Riven installation. If DirectX 5 does install, allow the Riven installation to complete. Then immediately install the latest end-user runtime release of DirectX 9.0c, available starting here. When you get to the point in the download process that gives you the Run/Save/Cancel window, click on Run and follow the prompts. Reboot when installation is complete. Start Riven using the Desktop shortcut/start icon. Heimdall Semper ubi sub ubi |
