I'm getting back into CT Versus after a long break. Until two years ago I played a lot of PT and CT Versus but my weaknesses were a lack of aggression as Spy around Mercs and a certain hesitation when my well-planned runs at an objective were scuppered by first contact with the enemy.
Last night, a very good player called TossedSalad (I'm recalling his nick from memory but you'd think I'd be unlikely to forget that one) spent an hour with me in a tutorial server (Aquarius) talking me through the finer points of Spy defensive maneuvers including smoking and neck snapping. I even got his neck in a subsequent Story session and he congratulated me.
I want to thank Salad and my old clan buddy AgentX_003 for helping out a born-again noob. I am a lot more confident of being able to play to a reasonably high standard this time around, partly thanks to guys like these. I do a fair amount of online gaming in my spare time and I'm grateful that there are people like this in the CT MP community.
I would have hit CT on the head yet again if I had run into nothing but smack talk on the servers. Thanks to these guys I'll be participating fully and, until I'm entitled to graduate from apprentice skill levels, will run a server called Noobistan almost every night around 10:00pm US PST.
I'll have to ask him about that. I got cammed constantly last night and wondered (a) where they shoot those things against a moving merc and (b) how they can make their fingers work quickly enough to draw, aim, shoot, adjust camera aim and gas while the target is still in motion...

Yeah, I genuinely admire such twitch skills, especially when they are legitimate as opposed to an exploit, yet exploits have dominated Versus gameplay from the very beginning. Even discounting file setting changes (which is a downright cheat rather than an exploit) it strikes me as a pity that an ingenious stealth gadget like the spycam gets used as an offensive weapon. You may as well give the spies a baseball bat. I admire Versus for its Spy vs Mercenary tactical ideal and the reason I'll never be a top Versus contender is that I'd rather not "win ugly" even if I had the skills to cam mercs while bouncing off walls. It makes the spies look more like The Cat in the Hat than stealth operatives. Every now and then, however, it's possible to do well within the intended spirit of the game. A pal of mine is eager to try out Versus as my teammate and maybe, just maybe, we'll get good enough to be able to use the cam effectively as it was intended, ie one spy hacks while the other shoots a cam into a doorframe, gasses the Merc and wins his buddy just enough time to get the hack. Who knows...
i think camming while a spy is hacking is a lude point. many mercs just put mask on automatically. but yes - the fundamentals and ideals that you speak of are what i like about the game as well. and yes - the cam can be used effectively without having to 'cheat' ie in places where a merc wont expect it.
when i get quick cammed from more that like, 10 feet, i just assume that person changed some settings and accept that they're losers. i can say that with some confidence because that doesn't happen once with these people... it's every time - no questions.
however; when i get cammed and didn't know it was down - bravo to you. i'm almost happy b/c i'll most likely steal that idea from you.
