I can't even get past the Ubisoft splash sequence. The computer freezes up, sometimes with a popping noise coming through the speakers. Sometimes, the monitor loses the signal from the video card (idles). This is a clean install of Windows XP with SP1a. DxDiag info follows:

Sorry, I should probably provide more info.
Myst V installed to drive E: (tried drive D: first, then switched to drive E: to see if it might be the drive causing the problem; drive C, E, F are partitions on the same drive) Myst V DVD (Limited Edition) in drive G: (DVD-ROM) Also running AVG and ZoneAlarm, but this problem occurred prior to their installation. |

Yet another update.
I installed the demo of Myst V to see if it had the same problem. It made it through the splash screens, then froze when the game screen came up. This time, the system blue screened, saying there was a problem with nv4_disp, with technical information 0x000000EA (0x85294590, 0x86511400, 0x850ED768, 0x00000001) The physical memory dump follows: // // Watchdog Event Log File // LogType: Watchdog Created: 2005-11-01 13:23:32 TimeZone: 480 - Pacific Standard Time WindowsVersion: XP EventType: 0xEA - Thread Stuck in Device Driver // // The driver for the display device got stuck in an infinite loop. I'm am not the technical master you are awaiting but I thought I just might offer a couple side suggestions if you haven't tried them already...I'm not even sure if they're relevant to your problem....but what the hay!
You said you did a clean install with Service pack 1 right? I would suggest going to windows update & getting yourself updated with Service Pack 2. If you don't want or can't do this...AUTOMATICALLY - Try a CUSTOM windows update and look to see if there are any possible hardware updates ready for you....software too. Sometimes these updates will do the trick...sometimes they won't...but just in case you haven't tried somethng like this...you could give it a whirl as you wait for a better response. Take care... With all due respect to neo...1, Win XP's SP2 has been causing some folks many, many more problems than it solves. If you're having problems that SP2 specifically fixes, *then and only then* install SP2. Take a look at:
-- List of fixes included in Windows XP Service Pack 2 -- List of base operating system fixes in Windows XP Service Pack 2 -- List of Outlook Express fixes that are in Windows XP Service Pack 2 -- List of Com+ fixes in Windows XP Service Pack 2 -- List of printing fixes in Windows XP Service Pack 2 -- List of Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC) fixes in Windows XP Service Pack 2 Before we get into suggestions, some questions: 1. You have control over the drive to which Myst V installs. Why did you install the game to your D: and then E: drives, when your C: drive (default install drive) has plenty of free space? 2. Did you install NVIDIA's version 81.85 video driver per the instructions in Myst V: Installing Video Drivers With Win XP, one of the stickied topics at the top of this Forum? 3. Did you install Myst V from a clean boot, as detailed in Myst V: Clean Boot Install/Re-install With Win XP, another of the stickied topics? Heimdall Semper ubi sub ubi |

That's exactly why I chose not to install SP2 on this go around. It broke some stuff before. So on my clean reinstall of Windows, I only installed SP1a and then did a windows update to get all fixes sans SP2. No additional hardware drivers were available.
1. I installed the game to another drive other than C like I usually do. I tend to reserve the C drive for the OS and work applications and install games and use general storage on other drives/partitions. Would this make a difference? I'll give that a shot, but I'm not going to hold my breath. That memory dump makes me think there's something wrong with the 81.85 Nvidia drivers 2. Yes 3. Yes |

"If the driver installed by Windows Update doesn't help, manually install version 81.85 (and then version 77.77 if 81.85 doesn't help), using the procedure below." If so, have you tried version 77.77? Heimdall Semper ubi sub ubi |

Yes...the novice neo knows that SP2 is problematic for some people...that is why the novice neo disclosed his lack of mastery before stating his suggestion (and also the don't want or can't do this - in case dalboz knew this already)!!! I'm happy that the master is here! You're in good hands dalboz! Peace "The end has not yet been written..." |

Okay, I installed Nvidia v77.77 drivers (full clean install of drivers, including use of Driver Cleaner to get rid of the remnants of 81.85) and clean installed the demo to the default location on the C drive. The demo starts, gets throug the splash screens. I start playing. Things actually seem okay, until I try to change the screen resolution from the 800 X 600 to 1024 X 786. Then the game goes haywire, screen goes black, background audio still running, and the system stops responding requiring a hard reboot.
Now the demo won't start up again. Note: I'm now testing this using the demo because it seems a little more barebones and faster to install/reinstall if I need to. |

Okay, like Neo, I am not the "technical master".... and again, (see "Severe Graphical Issues" thread) please forgive me if my video card is very different from yours (I don't know), but with my NVIDIA GeForce2 GTS/GeForce2 Pro, I found that the game ran perfectly with driver version 61.77. (Yes, it's an OLD driver -- 7/2004! But anything more recent than that caused severe graphical problems for me.) Hope this helps.
Just for comparison, I also run WinXP Pro, SP1. My machine is quite a bit slower than yours though -- Athlon 900 MHz, with 512MB RAM. And EoA ran flawlessly. "The optimist believes this is the best of all possible worlds.... the pessimist fears that this is true." |

Debralynne, were you able to change the resolution and other video settings from the default? That seems to be when things screw up, although I find it odd that changing the resolution in the game would cause it to crash at the opening splash sequence.

Debralynne, your card is three generations older than dalboz's, and the card architecture has changed considerably over that time. Whilst 61.77 ought to work it shouldn't be necessary to go back quite that far.
Having said that, I have the same card as dalboz and 77.77 is a better fit than anything more recent (which are targeted more at the GeForce 7 and SLI on PCI-E). I ran at 1280 * 960 (note the 4:3 aspect ratio, not 1280 * 1024 which is 5:4) on a 19" CRT without problems. Luton UK. GMT. Tapestry KI #: 31293 Cocoa Parties Unlimited! |

I was thinking the same thing. Most newer drivers are being written to take advantage of features of newer cards, and don't really fix problems with the older ones.
Also, please note that 1280 X 1024 is only the desktop resolution. Myst V will only run at the default resolution of 800 X 600, and if I try to change that, it crashes and becomes unrecoverable. This is either a problem with the card, the drivers, or the game, and since Myst V is the only game (so far) this has happened to (some stability issues have appeared in some others, like F.E.A.R. and Civ IV, but at least they ran at the requested resolution), I'm guessing it's a problem with the game. Unless someone can tell me otherwise. |

Dalboz, you have a checkbox, checked by default, to display only recommended resolutions. Try turning that off and playing with what you get.

Checkbox? Where? I didn't see one, although it wouldn't be the first time I didn't pay close attention to something like that. But if something like that was checked, wouldn't it just not display "incompatible" resolution in the options? Would that actually cause it to crash and make the game unrecoverable? I'll take a look when I get home.
I'll add, in case it helps, that my Pentium IV is a Prescott with hyperthreading enabled. I don't know if this could be part of the problem. Folks, if you have the opportunity to get one of these, don't do it! It's a dog of a processor. |

The checkbox is on the Startup Menu's Options page.
Startup Menu > Options > Video, Recommended Only checkbox is directly under the Video Resolution slider. Heimdall Semper ubi sub ubi |

Okay, I know it's been a while. I tried unchecking the Recommended Only checkbox under resolution and it still did the same thing. I've now just gone ahead and played the game with the default settings, but I'm sorely disappointed at the severe technical shortcomings of this game, and not being able to use the features that I should be able to.

Try the following:
1. If you have these line items in your system BIOS, set them as follows: -- a. Assign IRQ to VGA - Enabled -- b. VGA palette snooping - Disabled -- c. PCI Latency Timer - 128 -- d. Video BIOS Shadowing - Disabled -- e. Video RAM Shadowing - Disabled -- f. USWC Options - Disabled -- g. PnP O/S Installed - Enabled -- h. Video BIOS Cacheable - Disabled -- i. Video RAM Cacheable - Disabled -- j. AGP Graphics Aperture - 64 MB (or the next highest available if 64 MB isn't an option) 2. Adjust the game's video settings for your GeForce FX 5950 Ultra: -- a. Start EoA and click on OPTIONS and then on VIDEO options, if that's not what you're looking at. -- b. Click on Reset to Defaults, and write down where all of the sliders are positioned and which boxes are checked/unchecked. -- c. Set Video Resolution at 800x600, and uncheck the Recommended Only, Shadows, and Dynamic Reflections boxes. -- d. Set the Video Quality, Texture Quality, Antialiasing, and Anisotropic Filtering sliders all the way to the left (minimum settings). -- e. Click on Ok, then quit and restart the game. -- f. You may like the video with these settings, but if not, go back to the VIDEO options menu. -- g. Move the Video Quality slider to halfway between the left-most and middle tick marks. -- h. Click on Ok, then quit and restart the game. -- i. If you still don't like the video, go back to the VIDEO options menu. -- j. Move the Texture Quality slider to halfway between the left-most and middle tick marks. -- j. Click on Ok, then quit and restart the game. -- k. Repeat this procedure until Video Quality and Texture Quality are back to their default settings. If you get something flaky while you're doing this, go back to the previous setting of whatever you changed last. -- l. When you've got Video Quality and Texture Quality back to their default settings, use the same procedure to reset the Antialiasing and Anisotropic Filtering sliders. -- m. Finally, recheck the Shadows and Dynamic Reflections boxes, in that order, and quitting/restarting in between changes. Heimdall This message has been edited. Last edited by: Heimdall G, |
