I am having trouble with installing Myst V: End of Ages.

Originally I couldn't install EOA, as when the DVD was autorun (or the MystV.exe file executed), I got a Windows crash dialog saying that "Macromedia Projector has encountered a problem and needs to close". I thought to circumvent this by executing the setupwin32.exe directly, but when I do that I get an error message "The progress bar has not been created yet". Trying to execute eoa.exe directly fails as the game and appropriate DLLs haven't been installed.

My computer exceeds the minimum requirements for the game, and so I thought it might be a problem with how my computer was installed. In the end I completely reinstalled Windows XP, removed everything from the computer and started with the absolute minimum that would be required to run the game (SP2, nForce drivers, Graphics driver and DirectX 9.0c). Unfortunately I got exactly the same error messages as above. Evidently the installation of my Operating System was not at fault.

I have also done what was suggested elsewhere - to copy the contents of the DVD onto my (now practically empty) hard drive and tried to run it from there, but the same errors occurred. Also, I've removed files from various temporary folders, including %TEMP%, in case they were getting in the way - but still no joy.

Can anyone help me please?

Uninstall/disable existing Macromedia products. It's possible one of them that is currently in state on your system may be causing a conflict. You can reinstall after installation.

Of course, this in no way guarantees that this will fix your problem. It's just one suggestion.

Thanks for the suggestion Maztec, but the system it is currently failing on has no Macromedia software on it at all - there isn't really anything but the OS at this point.

I think you need Macromedia Shockwave. (You do for the demo anyway).

I get the same error whether or not I have installed Shockwave separately or not - the projector error is being caused (it seems) by the proj.dll that comes with the game. I even replaced the disk in case that disk was faulty, but I'm still getting the same problem.

In fact, I've also removed SP2, and replaced it with SP1a, as the forum notes suggest - and yet STILL no luck!!

Somebody help me!!!!

Try the following:

1. Install Macromedia's Flash Player 8.

2. Use Control Panel's Add or Remove Programs to uninstall 'Macromedia Shockwave Player' and 'Shockwave' (should be separate listings). Then re-install Shockwave Player. You may need to re-install EoA as well.

3. Disable one or the other of your NVIDIA nForce Audio (preferably in BIOS) or Creative Sound Blaster PCI (remove the card or use Control Panel's System, Device Manager). Having two sound systems active at the same time is just asking for trouble!

If you're going to play in English you can bypass the problem altogether (as I did: I still can't get my own Shockwave installed).

MystV.exe is a menu program, giving you a set of program choices and parameters.

setupwin32.exe does the install and eoa.exe will run the program.

You'll get a MystV.exe shortcut on your desktop. Change it in properties to point to eoa.exe instead.
