Hi,

The graphics of Myst V on my machine (PentiumM 2GHz, 2GB RAM, Nvidia card, Vista) are jerky, especially when using the mouse. Also, the "Myst V Detection Tool" does not accept my directx 10 version, and I suspect the two problems are related. How do I get directX 10 to pass the detection tool test?

I'm sure my hardware can do much better, based on performace of RealMyst and URU (although I think I tried URU before the Vista upgrade)

thanks

Welcome to the Forums!

Since EoA was released before Vista and DirectX 10, the "Myst V Detection Tool" won't recognize (or accept) DirectX 10.

Suggestions:

In general:
-- Always log into Vista with full Administrator privileges, and close all open applications before starting EoA.
-- Never boot up with the EoA DVD in any drive.
-- If the EoA DVD autostarts when inserted into the drive, cancel back to the Desktop.

1. Download and install:
-- a. The latest drivers for your video chipset, mouse, and audio chipset. If you haven't checked for driver updates within the past week, do so now.
-- b. Vista SP1, which should also install DirectX 10.1. SP1 is available through either Internet Explorer > Tools > Windows Update or Microsoft's Windows Vista Service Pack 1 Five Language Standalone (KB936330).

2. If not already done, download and install these updates:
-- December 2007 Windows Vista Application Compatibility Update.
-- An update is available that improves the compatibility and reliability of Windows Vista
-- Four Must-Have Vista Updates. The fourth update mentioned, KB936710, applies only to SLI and CrossFire systems (two NVIDIA or AMD/ATI graphics cards).

3. Open the NVIDIA Control Panel, and go to:
-- a. "3D Settings, Manage 3D settings". Set everything you can to "Application-controlled" and the rest to "None" or "Off" whenever that's an option. Click on Apply.
-- b. "Display, Change resolution". Set resolution to "800 by 600 pixels", and click on Apply.
-- c. Close the NVIDIA Control Panel back to the Desktop.

Start EoA, click on OPTIONS and then on VIDEO options. Set Video Resolution at 800x600, and uncheck the Recommended Only box. Gameplay, including mousing, should now be much smoother (assuming you've installed the latest drivers, as above). Quit EoA, go back to the NVIDIA Control Panel, and reset the above as appropriate. It's best to reset only one item at a time, start EoA, and see what happens. And repeat.

4. Some programs run properly on Vista only if you run them with full Administrator privileges and with the Run as administrator option enabled. See How to use User Account Control (UAC) in Windows Vista.

5. Try what's called out in:
-- a. How to troubleshoot program compatibility issues in Windows Vista
-- b. Advanced methods to troubleshoot a program that does not run as expected after it is installed on Windows Vista
-- c. How to troubleshoot issues that may prevent a program from being installed correctly on a Windows Vista-based computer

6. Install EoA from a clean boot.
-- a. Uninstall EoA using the Windows Add or Remove Programs utility.
-- b. Use Windows Explorer to find vpd.properties.
----- 1. Rename the file to something like OLD_vpd.properties. If you don't rename it, the install Wizard will tell you that EoA is already installed.
----- 2. Or, you can delete vpd.propertiesif you're certain that no other programs also use it. If other programs do use the file, deleting it will probably cause the other programs not to run.
-- c. Do step 1 in How to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot in Windows Vista.
-- d. Re-install EoA.
-- e. Do step 7 in How to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot in Windows Vista.

I have some very good news! The zip file that contains my fix is now distributed by Cyan Worlds!

You can download the zip file at http://cho.cyan.com/patches/Myst5InitFiles.zip

Enjoy the game
