What a disappointment... Myst V is failing to install and run properly on my system.

The installation is halting about 70% of the way through with the following error:

I tried to launch the game, and got the following message --

"This application has failed to start because MSVCP71.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem."

So I uninstalled and attempted a re-install, got the same error message during the install, and now if I try to launch the game it quits back to the desktop after the Ubi and Cyan opening animations play; and for what it's worth, it clears my desktop picture leaving just a plain background.

The wizard does go ahead and prompt me to register. [Edit: I just had a look at the contents of the Myst V program folder, and noticed that the SFX and SDL folders are empty, if that helps.]

Note that I also had difficulties installing Myst IV, but finally fixed that issue by updating the firmware on my DVD drive. By the way, the Myst V demo ran just fine.

Dang... I'm a long-time fan, and after all the anticipation, this hurts. I'd planned my weekend around this! Crying

Here's my DXDIAG, and please accept my thanks ahead of time for any assistance.

Are you logging into Windows with full Administrator privileges (not Power User, a limited User Account, etc.) when trying to install the game?

Also, did the "install log" have any additional information?

I have only one account set up on this PC, and it's got admin privileges.

See if this helps... it's the LOG.TXT file from the Myst V program folder:

Try installing XP SP2. It should clear this up handily.

Can you verify that? I've resisted updating to SP2 mainly on the advice of Heimdall, in regards to its effect on Until Uru.

Note also that I work in a school computer lab, and when we installed SP2 on my 26 lab PCs, it killed two of them dead. Even though I back up my files regularly, I'm not sure I want to risk that here at home.

Mowog, I'm running XP2 and Until URU without problems. I've got its antivirus and firewall turned off though, as I'm using Norton for those.

FWIW I also had to roll back XP2 and reinstall XP when I changed motherboards, so things are recoverable if the worst happens.

Maybe Dara100 will tell us why SP2 will "clear this up handily". Personal experience? Other folks' experience? Or...?

I still don't recommend installing SP2, basis the many, many problems I've seen it cause! Note that SP2 may fix a problem on one machine but completely mess up another machine with the exact same problem. Every Windows configuration is different.

If you have a specific problem that SP2 is purported - by Microsoft - to fix, then it *may* be worth a try. Take a look at:
----- List of fixes included in Windows XP Service Pack 2
----- List of base operating system fixes in Windows XP Service Pack 2
----- List of Outlook Express fixes that are in Windows XP Service Pack 2
----- List of Com+ fixes in Windows XP Service Pack 2
----- List of printing fixes in Windows XP Service Pack 2
----- List of Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC) fixes in Windows XP Service Pack 2

Be that as it may, if SP2 is your last option for installing EoA and it borks your system, there's a way to get rid of it, and then install SP1a. Before proceeding any further, read through:
-- a. Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 1 Installation and Deployment Guide. You'll install SP1a as detailed under Installing Service Pack 1 for Windows XP, Scenario 1: Installing the service pack so that computers use local service pack source files (recommended). Print out at least this section for reference!
-- b. How to remove Windows XP Service Pack 2 from your computer. You'll remove SP2 as detailed under Use the Add or Remove Programs tool in Control Panel. Print out at least this section for reference!
-- c. You cannot create a network connection after you restore Windows XP. Print out this bulletin for reference!

Here's the SP2 removal/SP1a installation procedure:
-- a. Log into Windows with full Administrator privileges. Do not open any applications or programs, except as follows.
-- b. Download SP1a. You'll probably lose your Internet connection after removing SP2, so download SP1a before doing so.
----- 1. Use Windows Explorer to create a folder named \XPSP1 on your C: drive (C:\XPSP1).
----- 2. Click on Network Installation under Installing SP1a on Multiple Computers.
----- 3. In the blue Download panel, select your language, then click on Go to start downloading xpsp1a_en_x86.exe, 125 MB. Save this file to C:\XPSP1.
-- c. *Carefully* remove SP2.
-- d. When you're certain that removal is complete, reboot, and log into Windows with full Administrator Privileges.
-- e. Install SP1a.
----- 1. Using Start > Run, run xpsp1a_en_x86.exe.
-- f. Reboot after SP1a installation is complete.

You should have your Internet connection back. If not, see You cannot create a network connection after you restore Windows XP.

Suggestions for the EoA install problem, all of which may be necessary to do:

1. The most recent firmware for your DVD-116 is version 1.22A (116v122A.EXE), available here. If this isn't the version you have, download and install it.

2. Do complete virus, adware, and spyware scans of both your C: and D: drives.

3. Check your C: and D: drives for errors. Refer to How to Perform Disk Error Checking in Windows XP. Another option is Norton SystemWorks 2005's Disk Doctor.

4. Defragment your C: and D: drives. Refer to How To Analyze and Defragment a Disk in Windows XP and How to Defragment Your Disk Drive Volumes in Windows XP. Executive Software's Diskeeper 9.0 is another option.

5. Reinstall Java from a clean boot. See Myst V: Java-related Installation Problem Fixes for details.

6. Your virtual memory paging file is probably located on drive C:. If so, try moving the paging file to D:. See How To Move the Paging File in Windows XP for details.

7. Use Windows Explorer to find the InstallShield folder, probably in \Program Files\Common Files\InstallShield, and rename it to something like \Program Files\Common Files\InstallShield_OLD. Install EoA from a clean boot as below. The InstallShield folder should be re-written during the install process. If the install fails, find the folder again, and this time delete it. Do the EoA install again.

8. Create a User Account with all the rights/privileges you can give it, and reboot. (See How To Create and Configure User Accounts in Windows XP for details.) Then install EoA to the new account from a clean boot. See Myst V: Clean Boot Install/Re-install With Win XP for details.

If the above gives you a good EoA install, let's talk about your sound and video drivers. They're very old, and updates are available.

Heimdall

They say you're making progress if you change the error... I upgraded Java to version 1.5.0, update 5 on Mr. Zebe D's recommendation. I posted the previous install error above... what I get now is this:

As for my video drivers, I know they're dated. They were a compromise that would let me play both Uru and Myst IV. I had updated the drivers as prompted during the Myst IV installation, only to find later that Uru had been disabled. So it was at your advice Heimdall (I think) that I went back to the 56.72 drivers. But now that I've uninstalled Myst IV (bad experience - shudder), that's no longer a factor... but I would like to keep Uru alive, especially now that I'm a member of the Until Uru podcast team.

I'll gladly update my sound drivers, as that might solve another little issue we've had in connection with the podcast.

As for all your other recommendations, I'll tackle them shortly. I wish I had all day to figure this installation out. Better than that, I wish I had the money for a new computer... Angry

Thanks as always! It is a very good thing to have enthusiastic experts on call.

56.72 was me. Heimdall's a 52.16 man. Wink

By the way, what exactly was your card? With a Ge Force FX card you're not restricted any more.

GeForce FX 5200.

But note that the 56.72 drivers worked just fine in the Myst V demo.

I'm actually a step ahead there. I took care of that this morning, with no change to the EoA installation.

Hi, Mowog. I asked you about your previous card. I read your dxdiag for your new one. Smile

At a later date you can try 78.01 for both main and stereo drivers.

Resolution at last!

I hope you guys realize what a benefit you are to this community. I did as Heimdall recommended, and re-installed Java from a clean boot. I then followed suit with EoA, and everything went flawlessly. I'd have responded earlier, but we do get caught up in these adventures, don't we?

I also re-assigned my page file to D: from C:, something I hadn't thought of before... but with C: having only about 4GB of fragged-up free space remaining, that may well explain the pronounced lag and disk activity I've been noticing in Until Uru.

Anyway, it seems the surface beckons... from the Great Shaft of D'ni to unplugging a stubborn bathroom drain, in the space of minutes. The mind boggles.

Thanks again,

Mowog

I'm glad everything worked for you, Mowog.

What sort of Ge Force 4 card was your previous one? Your answer could be useful.

Ha... okay. My previous card wasn't a GeForce 4 at all, but the GeForce 2 MX that shipped with the machine when I bought it back in 2000 or so. My current card is (as mentioned) an FX 5200 that I installed shortly before Uru released. So I've been using it since fall of '03, more or less, with very few problems, and all of those were resolved by driver changes.

Thanks, Mowog. Just to confirm (since I'm somewhat surprised) - you had the snowy relto / moonroom whiteout problems on your FX5200 before you installed 56.72?

I'm passing this info onto bobzasio, the Cyan developer. There may be a fix.

Just want to say I had the exact same problem Mowog posted at the top of this thread, and the clean-install of the Java JVM got me installed & going!

Thanks! bow You guys rock!

For the record, I have a Dell 8100 1.7GHz w/1GB RAM, WinXP SP2, Nvidia 64MB GF3 (56.73)

Although Uru ran OK on the GF3, the framerate in MV is just too slow, esp. when Esher starts wandering around. Plus I've seen the screenies off the newer cards. Time for an upgrade!

No, I never had the snowy Relto thing. It's hard to recall now, but the Uru difficulties occurred after I upgraded my video drivers during Myst IV installation. I just followed the prompt. I don't recall if that actually killed Uru temporarily... I do remember that there was a brief period that all instances of still water in Uru were not rendering. For example, there were waterfalls in Eder Gira, but no standing water. Likewise, the streams and fountain in the hood were empty. But I found another driver set that fixed that issue. During the same period, I found that my 3D stereo capability had disappeared, and that's when you suggested going to 56.72 main and stereo drivers to get everything back. And that's been fine! Myst IV and Uru, both 2D and stereo, have worked perfectly.

But note that just during the last couple of days I've had video problems in EoA. Last night, just before quitting, I took a photo of the door at the bottom of the Great Shaft. My video had been flickering a bit, so I figured I'd shoot a pic for a save point, and quit playing. The photo as it appears in my journal is just static. Then this afternoon I tried to get a shot of the observatory in Todelmer, and got the same thing... then a sudden crash to blue screen. Looking over the crash report, it appeared that the video drivers were at fault.

With that in mind, you're thinking that 78.01 should be my next upgrade?

Thanks as always,

For what ever reasons, the 78.01 drivers did poorly for Myst V on my 6800 Ultra card. I had to role back to the previous 77.77 drivers. Now everything works beautifully.
