Another interesting point is that the Myst V game runs like a charm on my machine now and I went already in 2 ages without any issue, no freezing and a quite good fluidity.Fyi, I run on an Imac 3Ghz and a ATI HD4850 graphic card.

Hi frenchfly1954

Glad you've got the game working at last. It also runs well on my machine now that the sound is fixed.

Just followed geoffR's procedure for installing Myst V. It worked nicely. But it won't start. I'm using a MacPro with Snow Leopard. Any ideas?

Hi

Not sure what the problem could be. Have you installed the optional Rosetta software? This is required for PowerPC applications and is on the Snow Leopard install disk as an optional install.
Otherwise I would try running Disk Utility to Repair Permissions and see if this helps.
Is there anything interesting in the Console log?

Thanks, Geoff. I repaired permissions and do have Rosetta installed. I tried once again to start Myst and here is what Console says: 11/5/09 4:26:22 AM com.apple.launchd.peruser.501[108] ([0x0-0x1af1af].com.ubisoft.mystv[5462]) posix_spawn("/Applications/Ubisoft/Cyan Worlds/Myst V End Of Ages/Myst V End of Ages.app/Contents/MacOS/Myst V End of Ages", ...): Permission denied

Hi John

Looks like you have a permissions problem. I had some of these as well. I assume you have changed permissions on the game file as specified in my post for the 15th October?

It could be one of the files inside the game package that needs attention. In Finder, navigate to the game file - <Diskname>Ubisoft/Cyan Worlds/Myst V End Of Ages/Myst V End of Ages
Right-click (or ctrl-click) on the file and select "Show Package Contents". Double-click on the "Contents" folder then on the "MacOS" folder. You should see a file called "Myst V End of Ages". Single-click on this file to select it and check the "Kind" in the finder window, it should be "Unix Executable File".
If it's not then you need to apply the "Chmod +X" command to this file.
You could follow the instructions in my posting called "Sound Decompression Fix" on the previous page of this thread but apply it to this specific file.

Let me know if you still have problems.

Hello, Geoff, I must be getting closer but am not quite there yet. I did as you suggested and turned the Myst V End of Ages file from Document into Unix Executable File. Then I tried to start the main program file and got a message about having to have the disc in the drive; it was not there at this point. I put the disc in and double-clicked on the program. The icon bounced up and down for a short while in the dock and settled there, but still nothing yet.

Hi Geoff, Before my last post I headed in to the university with the Mac Pro still on at home. This morning lo and behold Myst V had started with the usual screen New, Continue, Quit. And I had previously done the sound updates you suggested, so I should be all set. Thanks again,
John

Hi John

Not sure what the problem could be. Could you do the following:
Put the disc in the drive;
Note down the time;
double-click the application;
Start the Console utility and check for messages around the time when you started the game.

You could also check that the file "plSoundDecompress" inside the "Resources" folder inside the "Contents" folder, is an application. If not, follow the earlier instructions about sound decompressing fixes.

Hi Geoff – Myst V running perfectly on my Mac Pro with Snow Leopard thanks to your help. It even works well with the highest screen resolution, and the sounds are fine. John

GeoffR, You guide worked perfectly and the game launches fine. The sound is perfect as far as the intro goes but once the game starts no sound at all?

DO I need to make the "plSoundDecompress.nib" classes and objects Exec as well?

Hi osxfr33k

I can't remember which files I had to modify to get everything working. I have just checked my Myst V application file and the file within Contents/Resources called "plSoundDecompress" is an application file. Check yours and make sure it says "Kind = Application" when selected.

GeoffR

I want to make sure of a couple of things. WHen I run the java compiler command I should only see two messages when done. No error or warning messages but some weird messages.

If the script you want us to mod was not done correctly then you get errors right? If there were added correctly there will be no errors?

DO you have a a few lines of that script you can paste? I want to see the lines above and right after to make sure the one line of script was removed correctly and that the script added is indented correctly.

the sound decompress utility does work because the SFX directly goes from 384mb to 2.68GB.

They are Document files but they are actually ogg files. should it not say ogg and not document? MAybe that why I only hear the intro and once the game is at the menu there is no sound?

I am on hackintosh but that does not matter since everything works 100% on my mac clone.

Something is wrong with the SFX dir , either the rights or something?

What else could it be? I have sound for the intro including the father speaking about what has happened to him and all. Its just right when I get to the main game menu no sound!!!

Ok here are some terminal messages but null pointer etc obviously some problem still exists:
osxfr33ks-MacBook-Pro:macos osxfr33k$ ./'Myst V End of Ages'
Sat Nov 21 14:03:34 osxfr33ks-MacBook-Pro.local Myst V End of Ages[175] <Error>: kCGErrorIllegalArgument: CGSCopyRegion : Null pointer
Sat Nov 21 14:03:34 osxfr33ks-MacBook-Pro.local Myst V End of Ages[175] <Error>: kCGErrorFailure: Set a breakpoint @ CGErrorBreakpoint() to catch errors as they are logged.

I guess those terminal messages are ok since I get the same messages when I launch the game from a terminal in OSX 10.5.7.

Anyone else with no sound after the intro screen?

EDITED AGAIN:

I put in a Cables to Go USB Audio and everything works fine so its my Built in Audio which uses a HAck VoodooHDA which must be the problem.

Sorry about all that!!
