Oops, I posted too soon - I was just at the bottom of the first page of messages, and didn't realize that there was a second page with what I'm sure are much better suggestions from people far more Unix/Terminal savvy than I am.

That said, the modification I mentioned allowed me to install Myst V on my Intel iMac (OS 10.5.7 with the latest Java patch issued June 15, 2009). However, I cannot get the program to run. Similar to what others have mentioned, The icon flashes for a second when I double click on it in its folder, and then..., nothing.

Something's missing...

Strange that ubi soft only has a patch for the limited edition as the patch works also for other editions after a small adaption.

The patcher creates a disk image of the cd, ejects the cd and than starts working with the file in the setup folder. However, that filename is different for different editions. There is no error warning for an different edition and the patcher hangs after creating the disk image.

How I fixed it:

0) Get the patcher for the limitted edition here: http://patches.ubi.com/myst_5_..._intel_installer.dmg
1) I opened the setup folder of the Myst dvd and copied the filename. (actually retyped it in an texteditor) In my case the name was: bd34fbe22aed2ba904da67fe5021cc05
2) I copied the official ubi patch to harddisk so I can edit it.
3) ctrl-click the patcher and select "show content".
4) Open the folders Content -> Resources -> Scripts until you find the file "Myst V Installer Patcher.scpt"
5) Open this file with the mac texteditor by dragging it on its icon.
6) you'll see al kind of unreadable code that should stay unchanged. Look for the four occurences of the text: 60f3b48b952a00f915ae4b48fe453c29 and replace it with the text co copied earlier. (all four occurrences are close together)
7) Save the script and the changed patcher will now find the right folder to work on.

---
I tried this on a 2.66 GHz i-mac with Leopard. I played my Myst long ago with an old 700 MHz i-mac and wanted to see how it performed on my new computer. The readme with the dvd wrote "- This application will not work properly on Mac's with the Intel Processor (or maybe very slowly via Rosetta)." But I can assure that it runs significant faster than with my old G4 i-mac

With this simple, elegant solution, I was able to install and run Myst V on my Intel iMac (late 2006, Core II Duo).

Thaks very much.

Hi, I'm having problems with this. I'm not very familiar with command lines for Mac OS and I'm not sure if I should jump into that stuff just yet. I'd like to get a bit of additional advice first.

I have the Limited Edition and I've run the patch provided by Ubisoft but I'm not seeing anyplace on my computer where it's been installed. I don't know how to actually run the game now. Frown

I did check on the dvd though, I scrolled down past the broken installer and found lots of stuff that looked like it was for PC, but I also found a "mveoa" icon with the pencil, ruler, and paintbrush, so I double clicked it. It came up to what looked like the rest of the installer. I clicked ok for English, then accepted the license agreement, but when I chose next to accept the default install location it gives me an error "getPartitionNames requires native support" and an ok button. Frown

Any ideas on what I'm doing wrong?

I have an Intel iMac 24" 3.06ghz 10.5.7 with all the updates, and an ATI 4850 HD video card.

Help me everyone, you're my only hope!

You have to manually edit the Patch as per the instructions two posts above yours from Cmdr_Oolite. Copy the patcher from the disk image that mounts when you run the Ubisoft patch, to your desktop. Then you can edit it. Once edited, run the installation from that modified installer, with your Myst DVD in your drive. The "getPartitionNames requires native support" error you've seen is because the folder name in the original Ubisoft Patch isn't correct for your Myst DVD version. That's why you have to edit it. Just use Text Edit, and use the Find/Replace function for the four instances of the folder name and you should be good to go. No other Java hacking, etc. should be necessary.

Thanks for your swift reply.

When I look at the dvd setup folder I have the correct folder the script is looking for. 60f3b48b952a00f915ae4b48fe453c29

When I run the patch it asks for my password, runs for a while, then quits. Is this the only installer I have to run? If so, I don't see anything else on the hard disk that would be the game. Frown

Ok, so I took a leap of fait and followed all the command line instructions. It all seemed to go off without a hitch. However, when I double click to run Myst V, I get an error saying "You can't open the application "Myst V End of Ages" because it is not supported on this architecture."

Again, this is the Limited Edition with the making of and sound track discs. The DVD shows it supports 10.2 - 10.4

I'm running Leopard, fwiw.

When I did all of LunaNik's fix, with the Terminal, I was able to install but it wouldn't run, just as you have found, so at that point I gave up. However, a few days ago Cmdr_Oolite posted his method of editing the installer script, which worked for me with my copy of the PC/Mac version of Myst V, not the Limited Edition. So sorry, I can't help more than that.

For LunaNik's fix and Cmdr_Oolite's method, read both pages of this topic.

Again, if anyone needs them, some Terminal tutorials are available here (scroll down the page).

It's pretty sad that UbiSoft doesn't provide some sort of patch to let us die-hard folks play the old Myst games on our newer Macs. It's weird that Myst IV plays just fine on my MacBookPro, but Myst V was stopped dead in it's tracks, per the problems above.

My bad - I downloaded Ubi's patch a moment ago and it worked just fine. It's from 2006, so I'm wondering why folks above have been doing home-grown patching. Oh well, I've got a game to play...

I have been trying to install Myst V on my MacBook (running Snow Leopard) with no luck. I have it installed on my G5 system but this is going away soon so I need it to work on my MacBook. I tried patching the UbiSoft patch file as documented by Cmdr_Oolite and this seemed to work O.K. - it went through all the motions and finished successfully but the "Ubisoft/Cyan Worlds" folder it created was empty. Tried running it twice with the same result.
What worked was copying the files inside the "Cyan Worlds" folder from my G5 system to the MacBook.

So if anyone else is stuck trying to install on an Intel machine they could try finding a friend with a PowerPC Mac, installing it on that and copying the relevant files off onto CD and copying them onto their Intel machine.

Hello Cmdr-Oolite,
Tried to do this but cannot see any file number like you mention. Could you please precise how you open the setup file?
Thanks

Hi frenchfly1954

If you click on the "setup" folder in a Finder window, you will see a folder inside "setup" - this folder has the long filename as its title. If you click on this folder the title will show up at the top of the Finder window and you can manually copy it into a TexEdit document. If its the same title as the one quoted above just copy and paste it from the forum posting.

Have tried everything on this post (thank you) and read all the basics and useful links, in the effort to load Myst V to my new MacBook (OS X 10.6.1). Believe it is installed, but not sure then how to get it open and running. Still getting "getPartition Names reques native support." Believe I am giving up now unless anyone has any other suggestions. Thanks for just being out there.

Are you running as Administrator on your Mac? I had no problem with patching the script file.
Select the patch file in Finder and use Cmd-I to get the Info window for the file. At the bottom in the permissions area it should have you with Privileges set to Read & Write.
If the privileges are Read only and you are the Admin on the Mac then click on the padlock on the bottom and change the privileges to Read & Write then try patching again.

Hi GeoffR,
In fact now I succeeded in modifying the patcher, launched it, seemed Ok since I heard the DVD spinning in the drive, got the message that the ptching was complete but nothing happenned, no installation launched at the end of the process like mentionned, just hte DVD ejected.... so I'm now inthe same situation as you are, except that I have no Power PC around!!!! Would it be crazy to share these installation files? probably yes, too heavy I guess... so the last chance for me is the virtual machine but with degradated performance
Thanks anyway for the support

Hi frenchfly1954

Sorry about the problems you're having. I'm still trying various things to get the installer to run.

The Myst V demo installs and runs fine on my system! You can download it through this Apple page:
http://www.apple.com/games/articles/2005/10/myst5/

but you need Stuffit to unpack the package.
