Main Branch Error

This error occurs when you try to start EoA:

"Main Branch - Built 7/19/2005 at 1:46 PM has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience."

Possible fixes:

2. If you have recently applied Microsoft Security updates, check if you have installed KB917422 (look in Add/Remove Programs). After removing this security update, the problem was fixed on my system.

Note that none of the possible fixes mentioned in the above post resolved it, and were tried first - this security update was definitely the problem!

I never cease to be amazed at the variety of problems Microsoft's security "fixes" can cause. To add to the fun, Win XP SP3 is imminent (maybe), and they're already talking about Vista SP1. Oy!

KB917422 is MS06-051: Vulnerability in the Windows kernel could result in remote code execution. I've added removing that Security Update to Myst V: Main Branch and Access Violation/Stack Error Fixes With Win XP, with the following caveats:
-- a. No Security Update should be removed without first creating a System Restore Point. See Use System Restore to Undo Changes if Problems Occur, How to turn on and turn off System Restore in Windows XP, and How to restore the operating system to a previous state in Windows XP
-- b. KB917422/MS06-051 should be re-installed after completing Myst V.
