I've got two problems:
1. When moving or looking around with the mouse the picture is jittery as heck.
2. When Yeesha and her buddy are lecturing me, I can't hear them. It's not that they are making no sound, but it's like they're whispering so quietly that I can't understand what they're saying with all volumes at max.

I've tried the whole clean-boot re-install and followed the instructions to the letter, but it didn't help. Please I just want to finish out the series. Help me!

OK, enough drama. Here's my dxdiag report if it helps:

Questions:

1. When you updated your video driver, did you install a Gateway driver or a driver from the NVIDIA website? And did you do the updating recently?

2. When you updated your sound driver, did you install a Gateway driver? Did you do the updating recently?

3. It looks like you're running a mix of 512 MB and 1 GB memory sticks, or maybe 3x1 GB. Are all of the sticks the same specifications, for example, all DDR2/PC4200? Are they all good-quality and not a mix of OEM and el cheapo? (Since your video chipset shares system RAM, problems with system RAM can translate into video problems.)

Pending the answer to those questions, some suggestions:

1. Your speaker system may be set up incorrectly. Myst V by default will output 5.1 surround sound, that is, to 2 front speakers, 2 rear speakers , a center-channel speaker, and a subwoofer. If your system tells EoA that you have a center-channel speaker but you don't, the game tries to output to a speaker that isn't there, and that audio will be lost or very muffled.
-- a. Click on Start > Control Panel > Sounds and Audio Devices.
-- b. On the Volume tab under Device volume, if the slider is already set to High, turn up speaker volume using the volume control on the speakers themselves.
----- 1. Ensure that the Mute box is unchecked.
----- 2. If you make a change, click on Apply.
-- c. On the Volume tab under Speaker settings, click on the Speaker Volume box.
----- 1. If both sliders are already set to High, turn up speaker volume using the volume control on the speakers themselves.
----- 2. If you make a change, click on Apply, then click on OK.
-- d. On the Volume tab under Speaker settings, click on the Advanced box.
----- 1. On the Speakers tab, make certain the speaker setup you have is what's selected. For example, if you have 4 speakers and a subwoofer, select Quadraphonic speakers.
----- 2. Click on Apply > OK.
-- e. On the Volume tab under Speaker settings, click on the Advanced box.
----- 1. On the Performance tab, move the Hardware acceleration slider to None. (You can go back later and re-set this slider to Full.)
----- 2. Click on Apply > OK.
-- f. Close back to the Desktop, open the speaker utility for your SigmaTel Audio sound chipset, and do the same checks and adjustments as above.
-- g. Close back to the Desktop and play EoA.

2. You may have processes and applications running in the background that are interfering with EoA. Close all of them that you can, as detailed in step 4 of Myst V: Miscellaneous Video Problem Fixes with Win XP. Then WITHOUT rebooting, play EoA.

3. EoA may be asking your video chipset to do something it doesn't really want to do, resulting in the video jitters. Try the general and in-game video setting changes detailed in step 2 of Myst V: Miscellaneous Video Problem Fixes with Win XP.

Heimdall G,

Thanks for taking a look. nanoukmetal helped me with my sound problem and it's fixed (I was unknowingly running 7.1 surround sound with 2 speakers, duh). Hammer
I tried everything you suggested to fix the "shaking" problem, but it didn't help. Turning the mouse sensitivity down didn't smooth things out either.

In response to your questions:
1 & 2. Graphics Driver was from nVIDIA and sound driver was, I believe, from Gateway. Both were downloaded from Windows Update months ago. I don't like getting updates directly from nVIDIA because that usually causes more problems then it solves, but that's a moot point because there aren't any new drivers that I can find for my chipset (GeForce 6200).
3. I have 4 identical Kingston PC2-4200 1 GB sticks, and they had better be good quality considering they were $100 each at Best Buy. XP likes to pretend that 3/4 GB is missing, but my BIOS registered all 4 GB.

Like I said, my sound problem is fixed, but I would appreciate any help you can give me to stabilize my picture when looking around. Thanks again.

P.S. I did a little snooping around in the game despite everything being jittery, and now I have yet another problem (which might be related, so I'm telling you now). In certain spots of the Great Tunnel when looking in certain directions, everything disappears and all I see is a light green backdrop. I haven't noticed it in any other ages yet, but at a certain point in the tunnel I can't see anything in any direction.

I've tried disabling accelerators and write combing too, but that didn't help with either problem.

I'm at my wit's end. Please help. Googly

That sounds like a video driver problem, assuming that you don't have a system RAM problem as well.

Did you try all of the general and in-game video setting changes detailed in step 2 of Myst V: Miscellaneous Video Problem Fixes with Win XP (suggestion 3, above)?

Bear in mind that price isn't necessarily an indicator of quality or reliability when you buy from a chain store, unless you're getting name-brand memory and it's the name brand's good stuff. Win XP may be pretending that 3/4 GB is missing because you have a partially-dead memory stick!

More suggestions:

1. Check your system RAM for errors using a utility like Memtest86+ (free), available here. Click on 'Download - Pre-Compiled package for Floppy (DOS - Win)' under 'Memtest86+ V1.70 (01/14/2007)'. See the README.txt file for instructions on running Memtest. If Memtest indicates problems, go to your BIOS's Chipset Features Setup page or whatever page the memory variables like latency are on, and load the BIOS defaults. (Save your changes when exiting the BIOS.) Then try Memtest again. If you still get errors, you've got bad RAM.

2. Ah, but there ARE new drivers from NVIDIA for your GeForce 6200 chipset! And if you install an NVIDIA driver *properly*, it shouldn't cause more problems then it solves. (Unless you install the wrong driver, of course.)

See Myst V: Installing Video Drivers With Win XP, under Installing NVIDIA Drivers. Be certain to install or re-install DirectX 9.0c and carefully follow the other installation instructions.

Heimdall G,

Oh, yeah. I guess GeForce 6200 would be part of the GeForce 6 family, huh? Hammer
Well, I downloaded the new driver and reinstalled DirectX, and sure enough, that fixed my disappearing world problem, but the jittery problem remains.

I ran the memtest program (which took forever), and it didn't find any errors, but it only registered 3 1/4 GB just like XP. I restored my BIOS defaults, which still registers all 4 GB, but nothing changed (which makes sense since I've never fiddled with BIOS).

When I first noticed the discrepency, I called Kingston (mem-chip makers) and told them everything, and they said XP: Media Center Edition didn't like to acknowledge 4GB (whatever that means). Roll Eyes
When I called Gateway, they said my system is sharing memory. Which made perfect sense at the time because I knew my 256MB Graphics card only had 64MB on board and I had heard a rumor somewhere that XP takes 1/2 GB of memory. If memtest reads the same amount of memory when XP isn't even running though, that can't be it, can it?

More information on my jiteryness: I get a lot of horizontal cut-off lines on my screen when I look around. That would normally make me think my Graphics card isn't good enough, but GeForce 6200 should be more than enough, shouldn't it?

I hate to be such a persistant pest for you, but I really, really want to finish out the Myst series in dignity. I'd be very grateful if you could help me. bow

Are you having sound problems of any sort, either with EoA or with other programs?

Further suggestions:

1. If you have lots of processes and applications running in the background, they could be causing problems with EoA. Close all unnecessary background applications and processes before playing EoA, as detailed in section 4 of Myst V: Miscellaneous Video Problem Fixes with Win XP.

2. Run EoA using Compatibility Mode. See How to use the Program Compatibility Wizard in Windows XP or HOW TO: Use Windows Program Compatibility Mode in Windows XP. Try various combinations of Display settings options with each of the compatibility modes (Win 98/Win Me first), and try all of the modes if necessary.

No, I haven't had any sound problems since I realized that my computer defaults to 7.1 surround sound even though I only have two speakers. Unfortunately, it reverts to 7.1 every time I reboot, and I have to change it before running any games (annoying).

I tried and retried everything in section 4 when I tried and retried everything in section 2 (seperately and then combined, you can't fault me for not being thorough on this).

I tried all four compalibilty modes like you suggested, but there was no change.

With regard to your speaker settings reverting to 7.1 every time you reboot, in my post of Tue June 26 2007 10:22, suggestion 1, step d, refers to selecting the proper speaker configuration (in your case, probably "Desktop stereo speakers"), then clicking on Apply. Did you carry out those instructions, including clicking on Apply? (See also Configuring your speakers, p 16, in the Media Center User Guide for your PC.)

Also, are the speakers properly connected to the ports on the back of your PC? You have an auto-sensing system, and if the speakers aren't connected properly, the system may think you have 7.1 speakers and configure itself appropriately on bootup. Refer to the Sound System Setup Poster that should have been included with your PC. If you don't have the Poster, the ports are:
-- Black – Surround sound left and right
-- Yellow – Center channel and subwoofer
-- Blue - Side surround left and right, line in
-- Green – Line out
-- Pink – Microphone in

Two-channel speakers without a subwoofer should be plugged into the black port.

I'm still looking into your jitters.

BTW, if you don't already have the URL, Gateway's latest Drivers & Downloads for your GM5076E are available here.

When changing my speaker setup, I do follow the steps outlined in the manuel, set to "Desktop stereo speakers", and click Apply before clicking OK every time I boot up.

The poster that came with the system tells me to use the green port, and when using the black port, the speakers produce no sound even after reconfiguring, rebooting, and reconfiguring again. Just in case there was any doubt, the jack for the speakers (which came with the system) is colored green.

I checked the URL you provided and even searched under my seriel number, but I was already up to date on nearly everything. I downloaded and installed a couple minor updates which didn't change anything.

In case I haven't already said it, thanks for all the effort.

Well, ya can't argue with green! (Kermit once said that.)

Are you up-to-date on your motherboard chipset driver? The latest version is "Intel 945G Chipset Driver Version: 7.2.1.1006", D00463-001-001.exe, available here from Gateway.

Your DxDiag report shows that your monitor is a "SyncMaster 905DF(X)/955DF(X), SyncMaster Magic CD195A(P)". What's the exact model number of your monitor?

Yeah, that was one of the updates I've downloaded since the dxdiag report along with matrix RAID and BIOS updates, and, of course, the new video driver from nVIDIA.

My moniter is a SyncMaster 955DF, model code AN19JSBL if it helps.

The EoA jitters may be related to your monitor settings.

1. Install (or re-install) the Samsung Win XP driver for your SyncMaster 955DF, contained in 20030925153212937_905df_XP.zip, available here. This Zip file contains 4 files, setup.exe, sm905df.cat, sm905df.icm, and sm905df.inf.
-- a. Unzip these files into a folder.
-- b. Click on Start > Run and browse to setup.exe.
-- c. Double-click on this file to put it in the Open: box, then click on OK to install the driver.
-- d. Reboot when installation is complete.
-- e. Log into Windows with full Administrative privileges, close all open applications, and play EoA.

2. If you have the "Highlight Zone" monitor function enabled, use the on-screen display menu to turn it off. This may also require adjusting the "zoom" function. Then play EoA.

3. Try different screen refresh rates. Currently, you have this rate set at 60 Hz, and 70 Hz, 72 Hz, or 75 Hz may cure the EoA jitters.
-- a. Right-click on a blank area of the Desktop, then click on Properties in the resulting drop-down menu.
-- b. Click on Settings > Advanced > Monitor.
-- c. Click on the "Hide modes that this monitor cannot display" box to check it, then click on Apply.
-- d. Select 70 Hertz in the "Screen refresh rate:" box, then click on Apply.
-- e. Click on Yes to indicate that you want to keep these settings.
-- f. Click on OK > OK to close back to the Desktop.
-- g. Play EoA. If you still get jitters, try 72 Hz and 75 Hz. If you don't like any of the higher settings, go back to 60 Hz.

Note that a higher refresh rate can cure a noticeable screen "flickering" that sometimes is visible at 60 Hz, especially with fluorescent lighting. When I had a CRT monitor like yours, I always set the refresh rate to at least 72 Hz, otherwise the flickering would cause headaches.

BTW, if you don't have the manual for your monitor, it's available here.

re: screen "flickering"

Could it be due to overheating ?

I remember having such a problem at summer times.
My pc room is facing due South and was getting very hot. At first, I tried with the pc tower's side cover opened and had a fan blowing air directly inside the pc. I was able to see a big difference.
Later on, I installed a window air conditionning unit and it did solve that "screen "flickering". (keeping room temperature at 65F degrees)

Heimdall G,

I reinstalled my monitor driver (the one you gave me to download was the same one I already had), disabled the Highlight Zone function, and tested refresh rates up to 100Hz. Refresh rates of 70Hz+ considerably lessened, but did not eliminate, the horizontal cut off lines. Very high refresh rates seemed to create problems with other games. However, I'm otherwise as jittery as ever. It doesn't seem to matter how quickly or slowly I move my mouse, the image is still jumpy. Other high graphics games like Myst IV, Oblivion, and Total War don't have the same problem.

nanoukmetal,

I appreciate your trying to help, but I don't think that's it. My system and graphics card both have internal thermometers which are set to automatically notify me if things get toasty in there. Most of the time, though, they read fairly cool because I keep my computer in my house's "cold spot" which is never in direct sunlight. Living in the Arizona desert, I usually know better than to let my electronics overheat. Wink2

I appreciate you guys helping me, and we've already solved a couple of my problems, but if we can fix my jitteryness, I would really, really appreciate it all the more. Thanks.

Well, at this point and bearing in mind all that you've tried, I believe that the problem is with your GeForce 6200 itself, or with your system RAM. Otherwise, I'm out of ideas.

With the GeForce 6200, something about the card, like the memory sharing (which is seldom a good thing), may be the problem. With the system RAM, MemTest not seeing the full 4 GB makes me strongly suspect that you do in fact have a bad memory stick.

Some of my final suggestions will involve removing and reseating the video card, and moving memory sticks around. Are you comfortable with getting inside your PC and doing that sort of thing?

I tried shuffling around my memory cards and pulling them out one at a time, but no matter what configuration I tried, 4 memory cards caused BIOS to register 4GB but XP to register only 3.25GB, and 3 memory cards in any combination caused both to register 3GB.

I was going to try messing around with the graphics card next, but while I was putting the memory cards back, my 4 year old little brother decided to "help" and turned my system on while it was on its side.

I always assumed it was a bad idea to do that, but I had no idea how bad it was. Now, my system won't even start up. The CPU beeps loudly 3 times and the fan cranks up to full blast. It doesn't even display the Gateway logo or anything else on the monitor. I called Gateway, but all they could tell me was that my warranty expired in June.

I imagine I crashed the hard drive or something equally catastrophic, so thanks for your help, but I think it's a moot point now. Forunately, I still have an old clunker laying around, so I can still connect to the internet. I expect I'll have to take my computer in for repairs, but I'll keep checking this thread if you have any further advice. I would be forever grateful, but I'm expecting the worst.

Thanks anyway.
