I haven't played very far into the game at all, and partly because I have this error during their 1st speechs. It only occurs at one or two points during the speech, but I would like it to be perfectly clean if possible. The background sounds are fine. I have never had any problems with any of the other Myst games, and so this is somewhat frustrating. The game seems to perform fine with the default settings, other than the speeches. I have (to my knowledge) the most up-to-date drivers for my video and sound cards, and I have tried the "Misc Video Problem" solutions #2 and #4. Suggestions:

Always log into Windows with full Administrator privileges before installing any driver or DirectX. "Download accelerator" or "download helper" utilities should NOT be used when downloading any driver or DirectX.

1. Download the setup file for the latest release of DirectX 9.0c (dxwebsetup.exe), available here, to a folder on your hard disk. Install DirectX as follows:

First, clear your Internet Explorer caches.
-- a. Close all open applications.
-- b. Open a single Internet Explorer session.
-- c. Click on Tools > Internet Options.
-- d. Click on Delete Cookies > OK.
-- e. Click on Delete Files (check the 'Delete all offline content' box) > OK.
-- f. Click on Clear History > Yes.
-- g. Click on OK to exit.

Then Use Windows Explorer to search all hard disks for \temp, \tmp, and \temporary folders, and delete any files in these folders that aren't currently in use. If Windows complains when you try to delete a file, leave that file alone!
-- a. Click on Tools > Find > Files or Folders.
-- b. Type temp or tmp or temporary in the Named: box.
-- c. Click on the arrow at the right end of the Look in: box and then click on the disk drive to be searched.
-- d. Click on Find Now to start the search.
-- e. Click on the temp (or tmp or temporary) folders found to open them.
-- f. Delete any files in these folders that aren't currently in use.

And then install DirectX 9.0c.
-- a. Click on Start > Run.
-- b. Browse to dxwebsetup.exe, and double-click on it to put it in the Open box.
-- c. Click on OK to start the installation process.
-- d. Follow the extraction Wizard's instructions. Accept the install defaults whenever possible.
-- e. Reboot, log into Windows with full Administrator privileges, and close any open applications.
-- f. Start EoA.

2. Download and install (or re-install) the latest driver from Creative for your Sound Blaster Live! chipset, available here. This is "Creative Sound Blaster Live! 24-bit and Sound Blaster Audigy LS driver 1.04.0055", SB24_WEB64_LB_1_04_0055.exe, released 8/1/05, 11.91 MB. Install the driver as detailed under Show Details..., Notes:.

3. Start DxDiag, and let the blue bar in the lower left corner of the Dxdiag window finish crawling and disappear.
-- a. Click on the first sound tab (Sound 1 if multiple tabs), which should be the tab for your sound chipset.
-- b. Move the 'Hardware Sound Acceleration Level' slider to the left to the 'No acceleration' tick mark.
-- c. Play EoA.
-- d. If that helped, move the 'Hardware Sound Acceleration Level' slider to the right to the 'Basic acceleration' tick mark.
-- e. Play EoA.
-- f. Keep moving the slider to the right until the problems re-appear, then back off one tick mark.

4. Re-install EoA from a clean boot as detailed under "6. Clean-boot EoA Re-install, Previous Installation" in Myst V: Clean Boot Install/Re-install With Win XP.

Thank you for your reply. I'll post back with what worked. BTW, should I use the most recent version of the nVidia drivers, or should I use an older version? I have downloaded and tried 71.84, 77.77, 78.01, and 84.21. Which would you reccommend?

In Myst V: Installing Video Drivers With Win XP under Installing NVIDIA Drivers, you'll see:

"Some older video chipsets - the Geforce 2 MX/MX 400, for example - do not play nicely with the latest NVIDIA drivers. If you have a GeForce 2/3/4 chipset or a low-number FX (like 5200) and version 84.21 doesn't help, try version 45.23. Then, if 45.23 doesn't help, try version 52.16. Install using the procedure below. These drivers are both available here."

Your GeForce FX 5500 chipset qualifies as an older chipset.

How an NVIDIA driver is installed is very important. So, install as per the step-by-step instructions under Installing NVIDIA Drivers.

Thank you for your help. One further question. I uninstalled my current nVidia drivers through Control Panel as is the detailed procedure. I then ran the setup program for ver 45.23. It appeared that the setup routine worked perfectly, but then upon rebooting, the drivers had not taken effect and the system acted like I hadn't installed any graphics drivers. I looked in the control panel to see if the nVidia drivers had registered there, and they hadn't. I tried to install the 52.16 drivers and had the same result. Any idea why these driver packages would be acting like this? Should I be installing a different driver version? Thanks for your help so far and for your answers to my continued questions.

After you uninstalled your current driver using Control Panel's Add or Remove Programs, did you close Control Panel back to the Desktop and reboot before proceeding? If so, what happened during the reboot process, regarding video driver installation?

After I uninstalled the existing video drivers, and closed control Panel, I was asked to reboot, which I did. Then the OS came up with default resolution when it doesn't recognize the video card. I then cancelled out of the "Install new hardware wizard", closed down all applications, and ran the setup program for the new video drivers. It ran through what appeared to be a normal setup routine, then asked me to reboot again when it was finished. When it rebooted, it was still in the default resolution and the OS again attempted to auto-detect the video card, like I hadn't installed any new drivers in the first place. Does this help at all? Any idea why it would be doing this when I try to install those older nVidia drivers?

Solving your video driver installation problem could be quite complex, so let's solve the original skipping/static (sound) problem first.

Complete suggestions 1 and 2, above, then play EoA to see if the skipping/static problem is still there. If it is, complete suggestion 3, and again play EoA. If that didn't help, complete suggestion 4.

sorry to be such a problem. I did 1) updating directX and 2)downloading and updating my sound card driver. That did not solve the problem. I proceded to suggestion 3) and turned the sound hardware acceleration off. that fixed the problem, then I bumped it up to basic acceleration and the problem stayed fixed. when I bumped it up to standard acceleration, and turned on hardware acceleration in EoA, the problem came back. The problem remained, even if I told EoA to use software Acceleration when directX was told to use the standard acceleration switch.

So basically, I was hoping that if I got the correct video driver working, then I could use full sound acceleration + EAX effects. If that's not possible, then I'll just live with software accelleration. Let me know what you think. And thanks again for your continued help!

Unfortunately, with some of the newer games, the older Sound Blaster chipsets, like your SB Live! 24-bit, don't handle hardware acceleration and/or EAX particularly well. I don't think the video driver issue has all that much to do with the skipping/static problem, so you probably should just live with the successful DxDiag and EoA settings. You can always go back to full hardware acceleration when not playing EoA.

Heimdall, you were right about my sound card being my problem. I replaced my SB Live! 24-bit card with the new SB X-fi XtremeMusic card, updated my drivers and directX, installed MystV and the game performed flawlessly. Thanks for what you do for the Myst Community!
