so i tried to play the game. It says starting Myst V End of Ages then goes black, after that i see my desktop in 800 x 600 resolution then black again and finally returns to desktop. This also happens to teh demo and the full version. here's my diag report.

Suggestions:

1. Download and install the latest drivers for your pointing devices.
-- a. The latest driver for your Microsoft USB Wheel Mouse Optical is IntelliPoint 5.5, available here. If you that isn't what you've got, see How to find the name of your product. For other Microsoft mice, start here.
-- b. The driver for your HyperPen USB Tablet is available from Aiptek's driver download page (bottom of the page).

2. Download and install the latest driver for your sound chipset. If your motherboard is a P41BMS, it's an ECS product, and the latest sound driver (as well as other drivers) is available here, last driver at the bottom of the page. This is 323_wdm3940.zip, "Intel ICH4 Codec Sound Driver" for Windows Me/9x/2000/XP, version 3.23, released 3/28/03. See the Readme.txt file for installation instructions.

3. Download and install the appropriate driver for your Radeon 9200 PRO chipset as detailed in Myst V: Installing Video Drivers With Win XP. Since you have an older video chipset, this may be Catalyst 6.3, Catalyst 3.8, or Catalyst 4.12 (in that order), depending on which version works best.

4. While what you have is probably a driver problem, your AL-A300ATX 300-watt power supply is barely adequate to handle all your drives, etc. Especially if you've been having various weird problems with your PC, a new power supply with something like a 450-watt minimum (continuous power, NOT peak power) would be a lot better!

Yeah, problems like crashes and lockups that occur at times when you're not doing anything that would cause them. Or intermittent problems with reading from (or writing to) your various drives, system restarts that you didn't ask for, or anything else wonky that occurs at odd times for no apparent reason. And almost always just before you save that long word-processing document you're working on....

ooo well good thing my computer doesn't do that... it still doesn't work for some reasons. it just goes black and then shows my desktop in some sort of 640 x 480 resolution and then goes black again and then returns to desktop.

i've read many topics in this forum and noticed that im not the only one with such problem and that everyone seems to have some sort of solution that works for them but not others. so if myst is so buggy, why not make some sort of patch for it or do some investigation?

Well, I have the same problem that the game doesn't start flashes twice and then back to the desktop and the interesting thing is I have a powerbook G4 with OS 10.2.8 with NVIDIA geforce FX 5200 which I have seen on this forum works OK. I have been reading this forum regularly and have updated alot except java. Someone else had the same problem a month or so ago with a Mac.I am still waiting to play since last october. Maybe the solution is at hand.

yes i tried those suggestions. maybe i should just wait until some patch comes out or when i get a new computer

Well yes I realise that but if a PC amd a Mac crash exactly the same maybe it indicates not a hardware problem but something else.

From what we're hearing, a patch is unlikely.

Further suggestions, all of which to be done while logged into Windows with full Administrator privileges:

1. Try step 3 and then step 4 in Myst V: Miscellaneous Video Problem Fixes. If these steps correct the crashing but you still have video problems, try step 2.

2. If the above don't help, re-install EoA from a clean boot. To prepare for re-installation:

-- a. Check your hard disk for errors. Refer to How to Perform Disk Error Checking in Windows XP. Close all running programs before starting the error check, and tell Windows to automatically fix file system errors. Another option is Norton SystemWorks 2006's Disk Doctor.

-- b. Defragment your hard disk. Refer to How To Analyze and Defragment a Disk in Windows XP and How to Defragment Your Disk Drive Volumes in Windows XP. Executive Software's Diskeeper 10.0 is another option.

-- c. Clear your Internet Explorer caches.
----- 1. Close all open applications.
----- 2. Open a single Internet Explorer session.
----- 3 Click on Tools > Internet Options.
----- 4. Click on Delete Cookies > OK.
----- 5. Click on Delete Files (check the 'Delete all offline content' box) > OK.
----- 6. Click on Clear History > Yes.
----- 7. Click on OK to exit.

-- d. Use Windows Explorer to search your hard disk for \temp, \tmp, and \temporary folders, and delete any files in these folders that aren't currently in use. If Windows complains when you try to delete a file, leave that file alone!
----- 1. Close all open applications, and open a Windows Explorer session.
----- 2. Click on Tools > Find > Files or Folders.
----- 3. Type temp in the Named: box.
----- 4. Click on the arrow at the right end of the Look in: box and then click on the disk drive to be searched.
----- 5. Click on Find Now to start the search.
----- 6. Click on the temp folders found to open them.
----- 7. Delete any files in these folders that aren't currently in use.
----- 8. Repeat for tmp and temporary folders.
----- 9. Close Windows Explorer back to the Desktop.

Now re-install EoA from a clean boot, as detailed under Installing and Re-Installing EoA, "6. Clean-boot EoA Re-install, Previous Installation", in Myst V: Clean Boot Install/Re-install With Win XP.

Well, I read page 8 and unless I eventually have to accept that I can't play Myst V, there problem is different as they actually can open the game . As with the original question for PC, when I click the alias on the desktop it goes black as if the game is about to start then flashes back to the desktop then black again and then finally to the desktop.Now if there is a solution PC can there be a solution Mac for the same problem?

Something important to note is that you're using a G4 Powerbook, and laptop versions of ATi and nVIDIA cards aren't supported by End of Ages, so your efforts may indeed ultimately prove futile. My only suggestion at this point is to track down a friend or family member with a desktop system powerful enough to play the game and try it there (and since the Mac release is also cross-platform, you may even try asking a friend with a PC).

well, I wondred about this but as it said the same for Myst 1V I thought it wasn't this but its a good idea to raid a friends place and try their computer. Thanks.

Just another question does the PC which is having the same problem as my powerbook have therefore a problem with their card and if not maybe I can still resolve my problem. I still have these vague hopes of playing the last installment here.
