I've got a Windows 2000, SP4 machine. Running a Northwood 2.0GHz on an Asus board. I have a GeForce 6600 video card that I've upgraded to the latest drivers.

I have a brand-new install of Windows 2000 SP4, IE 6.0 SP1 with minimal drivers and software loaded, the PC has a 100GB hdd. I also have 512 MB RAM, and three optical drives: 2 ATA (Plextor CD burner, Asus DVD-ROM), 1 USB drive (DVD-RW made by Samsung). I have loaded all the current drivers from the manufacturers.

I have loaded Sun JRE 5.0 update 8 as well.

I seem to have major issues not with running Myst, but just loading it from the discs. I'm using the Myst 5 SE discs. I can't get the install app to continue past the second disc w/o locking up my PC. My discs have had minimal use as I have not been able to get this to install for over 8 months (i.e. they don't seem to be smudged or scratched). I've tried the applicable steps for a "clean install", but it seems geared toward XP, not 2000. There is no vpd.properties file, for example.

Other than the off-the-cuff, "why don't you upgrade to XP?" suggestion, what suggestions do you have?

It turned out I had to do two things:

1) load directly from the PC, not the DVD, and
2) De-frag.

I had had similar problems before when I first bought the DVD (before upgrading my video card). I forgot which steps I had to go through to get this to work. I was able to play all the way through the game. Thank you Heimdall!
