WinXP installer keeps telling me it detected a previous installation. I lost that installation due to hw probs. I have removed all the trace I could find from my disk and regestry. I have also tried the clean boot re-install. Still getting the same error

Never mind I found the solution in another thread. I deleted the vpd.properties file and installing again.

Hello, I am having exactly the same problem, could you please specify your solution a bit more? I don't quite understand where to find vpd.properties.
