We have a number of people who have had the

incorrect data check
STACK_TRACE: 16
java.util.zip.ZipException: incorrect data check

java error message, and whilst some have fixed it by a clean boot replace of their current java environment by 1.5.0 update 5, some haven't - they still appear to be getting the 1.4.2 error message.

If you're in either camp, would you please post some software details (eg OS / SP), so that we can identify what the underlying problem is for those we can't fix?

ok i'm having that same problem everyone has

Windows XP home edition SP2 installed.
currently using the latest version of java.


i've tried the clean install of the java 1.5.
uninstalled my old version and installed it
still can't work

I fished this out of Mowog's thread. His worked.

Yeah, i have service pack 2..

But still will not work with java 1.5 update 5.

I could not find any other java files when i do a clean install.

Darkensky, I saw from your DXDiag that yours is XP Pro.

I wonder what gearbert's is. I just have this sneaking suspicion that it's going to be a java / SP 2 clash.

I have a suggestion, but will warn you to do it at your own risk.

Heimdall has posted a means to roll back SP2 to SP1A. You could try:

1) Uninstall Myst V in add / remove programs
2) Uninstall java
3) Roll back to SP1a
4) Clean boot reinstall of java 1.5.0 u5
5) Clean boot reinstall of Myst V

What makes things a little more fraught is that if you revert from SP2 to plain XP (as I had to for a different reason) you lose your broadband connection.
You get an error message in the event viewer and have to delete a couple of lines from your registry.

Verify that the Objectname string value is set to LocalSystem in the following registry subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\RasMan
After you do this, delete the following registry subkeys:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\RasMan\PPP\EAP\25
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\RasMan\PPP\EAP\26

You may then need to reinstall your modem software.

As an aside, Heimdall, how do you get SP1a? If it's only over the internet, anyone that reverts is going to have to edit their registry before going to fetch it.

Microsoft recognizes that SP2 is causing *lots* of problems and has provided a means of removing it without re-installing Win XP or (usually) editing the Registry. SP1a is then installed.

Before proceeding any further, read through:
-- a. Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 1 Installation and Deployment Guide. You'll install SP1a as detailed under Installing Service Pack 1 for Windows XP, Scenario 1: Installing the service pack so that computers use local service pack source files (recommended). Print out at least this section for reference!
-- b. How to remove Windows XP Service Pack 2 from your computer. You'll remove SP2 as detailed under Use the Add or Remove Programs tool in Control Panel. Print out at least this section for reference!
-- c. You cannot create a network connection after you restore Windows XP. Print out this bulletin for reference!

Here's the SP2 removal/SP1a installation procedure:
-- a. Log into Windows with full Administrator privileges. Do not open any applications or programs, except as follows.
-- b. Download SP1a. You'll probably lose your Internet connection after removing SP2, so download SP1a before doing so.
----- 1. Use Windows Explorer to create a folder named \XPSP1 on your C: drive (C:\XPSP1).
----- 2. Click on Network Installation under Installing SP1a on Multiple Computers.
----- 3. In the blue Download panel, select your language, then click on Go to start downloading xpsp1a_en_x86.exe, 125 MB. Save this file to C:\XPSP1.
-- c. *Carefully* remove SP2.
-- d. When you're certain that removal is complete, reboot, and log into Windows with full Administrator Privileges.
-- e. Install SP1a.
----- 1. Using Start > Run, run xpsp1a_en_x86.exe.
-- f. Reboot after SP1a installation is complete.

You should have your Internet connection back. If not, see You cannot create a network connection after you restore Windows XP.

Thanks, Heimdall. Someone would have to make the registry changes outlined above between b and c. They won't be able to connect to the internet to download SP1a otherwise.

I'll change the instructions to call out downloading SP1a before removing SP2, both above and in the sticky.

Thanks again. It may be that Microsoft's own rollback deletes the registry keys, but I didn't have that luxury. I had to do an install over install from the original bootable CD.

Should there be a problem with an internet connection after reverting to SP1a by your revised method, this ought to be the first thing to look at.

This is the problem why I started to uninstall / reinstall repeatedly with different settings before finding this forum. I, too, checked to see if java was the problem for me.

I had 2 versions of java installed on my computer for some reason, and I uninstalled them both, rebooted, and installed the newest public version that I could see at Sun's page. My control panel currently says it's version 1.5.0 (build 1.5.0_04-b05), and I'm not sure if this is the same version that you guys are trying. Either way, this did not fix the problem for me, I still kept getting the same error.

My operating system version is WinXP SP2 with all the latest patches from WindowsUpdate.

I finally managed to get the game installed by rebooting into safe mode, and then running the Myst V installation wizard. I am now able to play the game.

It is possible I might've got the game to install by following the instructions at "Myst V: Clean Boot Install/Re-install With Win XP" verbatim, but I seem to be demonstrating my inability to read stickied posts again. *Hangs head in shame.*

Safe mode did not work for me. I also tried the clean install.

Java version says 1.5.0.50

Thanks, Jenneth. It's good to know that someone's swap from 1.4.2 to 1.5.0 u5 worked on an XP / SP2 machine. It looks like we're going to have to look elsewhere for the cause of the problem when switching doesn't work though.

Um... I've just had some feedback from elsewhere. Is it possible for those whose install of java 1.5.0 didn't change the error message to try a different disk (or the same disk on a different pc)?
