Me again, still trying to play Myst games on my notebook computer. heh. The problem I am having is that the cursor starts jerking around and the movement of the scene is not smooth. It seems to get worse the farther I go.

IBM ThinkPad, ATI Mobility Radeon 7500 card, Driver version 6.14.10.6422, date 5/13/2004. DirectX is the correct version 9.0c. I used this system successfully to play Myst IV once a line of code in that game was corrected.

I have barely enough RAM memory and probably not enough video card memory, but I have played the other games successfully in spite of this.

Are there any special settings I should try? I have tried using the Control Panel to set the monitor to 800 x 600 and tried setting colors to 16 bit, but that made no difference.

Try adjusting sound settings instead of the video. Most people go straight to the video settings as the cause of slowdowns/stuttering when adjusting the sound settings would fix it up easily. Things like EAX or number of sounds, etc, may be good to start with.

Thank you for the tip--but altering the sounds settings in the program didn't work. My only option seems to be "Software." I could lower the number of sounds, but that didn't make any difference to the jerky movement. Any other ideas?

Have you installed the latest mouse driver?

Hmmm... I'll check that... although I don't literally use a mouse... just the Trackpoint or Touchpad.

The same driver should take care of mouse, Trackpoint, and Touchpad. Of course, if there are separate drivers, install 'em all!

yeah, you have a 16MB videos card, when the game wants at least 32. and like you said, you also have a mere 256MB of RAM. if you follow all of Heimdall G's system tips that he has been posting all over the last few days, there isn't much else you can do except turn down all of the game options and reduce the screen resolution. either that, or buy some new hardware.

also, i am beginning to believe that there is a memory leak in the game, as many people are reporting that slowdown problems get worse the longer they play.

Thanks, myster3. Yes, I'm up against the limits, but I still think there's some other problem. This happened to me before with Uru, I think, and it was fixable somehow. Anyway, I remain hopeful!

I generally don't buy new hardware just to play computer games. It's just Myst games that give me problems--others I've played seem to run fine.

Something to try that might help and which may be related to a memory leak:
-- a. Run DxDiag as detailed under POSTING GUIDELINES, To post a DxDiag report, in Posting Guidelines and Myst V System Requirements.
-- b. On all of the Sound tabs, move the 'Hardware Sound Acceleration Level' slider to the 'Basic acceleration' tick mark.
-- c. Reboot.
-- d. In the EoA Options/Audio setup menu, set 'Number of Sounds' to the middle tick mark.

Setting Video Resolution in the Options/Video setup menu to 800x600 may also help.

I did as you said, Heimdall, but no change. I've also tried setting sounds to the lowest setting. The EoA software pretty much detects what settings I need as far as 800 x 600, etc.

What's interesting is that if I go from the hallway with the blue light and back to the first room (Kveer?) the movement problem clears up. I can go from door to door with no problem. But the minute I get near the door that goes into the hallway, the movements gets jerky again.

Do you think my ATI driver is OK? Do I need to update it? I still wonder whether this is a driver problem...

Good news! I uninstalled my ATI video driver and just rebooted, forcing an older driver to take over--and now I have smooth movement of the cursor and transitions.

I do have some trouble with blank spots in some graphics--e.g., in the blue "bubble" where the tablet is. I hope this is an occasional problem only--in Myst IV it was a real problem in some of the ages, until one of the community magicians came up with a correction line for a .dll file.
