After installing Myst V (and some java errors in the log file) and reinstalling several times, and reinstalling Java's latest version, and buying a new sound card (creative X-fi) and trying to run the game, I get the same erorr message stating it cannot find a procedure in BINK32.DLL. I can't find that DLL anywhere...in my computer or on the Myst CD's. Did I get a bad CD by chance? Any other fix?
Thanks...HS2004

A bad CD is possible, but unlikely.

You should have binkw32.dll in C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\Cyan Worlds\Myst V End Of Ages.

Do you have any other glitches or get any other error messages when trying to start EoA?

Suggestions:

1. Did you install the latest version of Java from a clean boot as detailed in Myst V: Java-related Installation Problem Fixes? If not, do so.

2. Re-install EoA from a clean boot as detailed under Installing and Re-Installing EoA, "6. Clean-boot EoA Re-install, Previous Installation" in Myst V: Clean Boot Install/Re-install With Win XP. It would be a really good idea to do steps 1 through 5 under Overall Windows and Hard Disk Tune-up before re-installing EoA.

3. If none of the above help, post a DxDiag report in this thread so that we can take a look at your system and maybe make recommendations. See Myst V: System Requirements and Posting Guidelines under To post a DxDiag report for a how-to. Run all of the graphics and sound tests you can before saving the report to a file, and post *all* of the file. If the manufacturer and exact model number of your PC aren't shown under 'System Information' (System Manufacturer and System Model) at the top of the report, also include that information in your post.

Thanks...The message reads: "the procedure entry point _binksetsoundtrack@8 could not be located in the dll binkw32.dll." It is the only error message I get because the game never starts and returns me to the desktop after the error message. Binkw32.dll is not in the Myst directory where you wrote it should be and searching for it on the CD's doesn't find it.
So next, I'll go through the LISTS of thingws you suggested, some I've already done. However, if this game is this finicky about itself, it may not be worth messing with!
I appreciate the help and info and I'll get back with you after going through your liturgy to see if it works. Meanwhile, where on the CD's is the Bink suposed to be and could you e-mail a copy of it?
Thanks

You won't find binkw32.dll on the CD's. It's unarchived and copied to your hard disk as part of the install process, so you'll need to re-install EoA as per suggestion 2, above.

First, let me thank Heimdall for his fine efforts and help in this matter. His suggestions were followed to the letter but to no avail. Myst V still refused to run stating it could not locate an entry point in binkw32.dll. Heimdall said that .dll file would be located in the Myst V folder...but it was not. We both doubted the exixtence of a bad CD but guess what? Since nothing else worked, I bought a whole ne set of CD's with a new game...Then : IT INSTALLED WITHOUT and error log and the binkw32.dll file was where it is suposed to be. So my conclusion is that it is a bad CD I started with. So back to store for a refund!
Thanks...

Are you certain that you initially had a legitimate copy of the game? For general information, in which country did you buy the CD version of EoA, and from which retailer?

I am experiencing the same problem with bink32.dll and have tried all the solutions you suggest with no success so I sumise I must also have a bad copy of Myst V.

Welcome to the Forums!

It's possible that you have a "bad copy" of EoA. Especially if you bought it on eBay, which some folks unfortunately view as a license to steal. Be that as it may, there are a some last things to try before buying another copy of EoA from a reputable vendor.

1. Over time, the laser lenses in a disc drive can build up a microfilm/haze coating which fouls up drive read operation and can cause games to install incorrectly. This is particularly true if:
-- You live in a dusty area.
-- There's a smoker in the house.
-- You don't have a vent hood over your kitchen stove or cooktop.
-- You use burning-candle or plugin (oil-dispersing) room deodorizers anywhere in the house.

Using a laser lens cleaning disc can help with read problems. This is essentially a disc with tiny brushes on it that take the haze off of the lenses. The best ones (especially for smokers, non-hooders, and candle burners/oilers) come with a cleaning solution used to wet the brushes, but this isn't a strict requirement. Run the cleaning cycle at least 3 times in succession, as a first pass.

I use the 3M Scotch Laser Lens Cleaner, but several brands are available. Some are for both CD and DVD drives, some for CD only or DVD only. There are various suppliers, both online and local computer stores. From Amazon, for example:
-- Scotch Laser Lens Cleaner for CD and DVD Players/CD-ROM and DVD-ROM Drives
-- Memorex CD/DVD-Player Laser-Lens Cleaner
-- Memorex Laser Lens Cleaner For DVD Only
-- RCA Discwasher 6-Brush Dry CD/DVD Laser Lens Cleaner
-- GE Laser Lens Cleaner Wet/Dry System
-- Maxell CD/CD-ROM/DVD Laser Lens Cleaner
-- Maxell DVD Laser Lens Cleaner
-- Allsop DVD CarbonEdge Pro DVD Laser Lens Cleaner
-- Philips CD/DVD Laser Lens Cleaner

2. As with drive laser lenses, CD's can build up a microfilm/haze coating which fouls up drive read operation and can also cause games to install incorrectly. Clean all three of the EoA CD's to remove smudges, fingerprints, any sort of microfilm/haze (which may be invisible to the eye), etc., that can interfere with your CD drive's disc reads. Don't just look at the discs and say "yeah, clean". Actually clean their shiny sides using either water-clear rubbing alcohol (additive-free, no witch hazel or whatever, no green or blue color) or a warm mild detergent solution. Dry with a soft, lint-free cloth using a center-outward motion, NOT circular around the disc. Remove any scratches deep enough to catch a fingernail using one of the repair kits available at Best Buy, Circuit City et al, or from an Internet supplier.

3. After you've cleaned the laser lenses and the discs, reboot and re-install EoA from a clean boot, as detailed under Installing and Re-Installing EoA, "6. Clean-boot EoA Re-install, Previous Installation" in Myst V: Clean Boot Install/Re-install With Win XP.
