Hi.
I get a BSOD in the game. The speed at which it comes appears to vary with the display adapter driver version. Version 6.x (that came with the card) lasted the longest, but I thought it was a fluke, so I kept trying, and I kept getting a BSOD. I looked through the posts and saw that nVidia drivers often cause problems so I tried the most recent 8.x. Same result, but quicker BSOD. I tried 77.77 and that gets a BSOD within 5 seconds. Microsoft Update thinks everything is up-to-date for SP4. I installed DirectX from the EoA DVD. The message on the second line of the BSOD is: "unexpected_kernel_mode_trap", and just after that a message flashes about "physical memory". The OS itself runs for days without problems, as does Xandros (Debian Linux), and SuSE (Linux). The DxDiag is for nVidia version 6.x. (Second edit) Tried driver versions 6.x, 81.95, 77.77, 71.84; did re-install in safe mode after cleanup and defrag. Thanks in advance for your time ... cheers, drl ------------------ System Information ------------------ Time of this report: 12/2/2005, 23:13:23 Machine name: LOMI Operating System: Windows 2000 Professional (5.0, Build 2195) Service Pack 4 Language: English (Regional Setting: English) System Manufacturer: IBM System Model: 68683M3 BIOS: Default System BIOS Processor: Intel Pentium III processor (2 CPUs), ~1.0GHz Memory: 1024MB RAM Page File: 138MB used, 2324MB available Windows Dir: C:\WINNT DirectX Version: DirectX 9.0c (4.09.0000.0904) DX Setup Parameters: Not found DxDiag Version: 5.03.0001.0904 32bit Unicode ------------ DxDiag Notes ------------ DirectX Files Tab: No problems found. You've apparently added system RAM. When you did so, were you *very* careful to install RAM with the proper specifications for your IntelliStation M Pro? For example, if your original RAM stick was PC800, did you match it with another PC800 stick? If the original stick was ECC memory, is the new stick also ECC? Etc., etc. Each of the 4 memory slots must have a RAM stick or a RIMM Continuity module (C-RIMM) in it - there must be no empty slots. Also, at least one slot from each memory channel must have a RAM stick installed. That is, if you have two RAM sticks, you can't have both of them on one channel.
Suggestions: 1. Check your system RAM for errors. You can use either the IBM PC Enhanced Diagnostics (see pages 332 and 333 in the Hardware Maintenance Manual), or a utility like Memtest86 (free), available here. Click on 'Download - Pre-Compiled Memtest86 v3.2 installable from Windows and DOS' under 'Memtest86 3.2 Release (11/Nov/2004)'. If Memtest indicates problems, go to your BIOS's Chipset Features Setup page or whatever page the memory variables like latency are on, and load the BIOS defaults. Then try Memtest again. Assuming you have the proper RAM installed, if you still get errors, you've got bad RAM or a problem with your CPU's L1 or L2 cache. 2. If you have these line items in your system BIOS, set them as follows: -- a. Assign IRQ to VGA - Enabled -- b. VGA palette snooping - Disabled -- c. PCI Latency Timer - 128 -- d. Video BIOS Shadowing - Disabled -- e. Video RAM Shadowing - Disabled -- f. USWC Options - Disabled -- g. PnP O/S Installed - Enabled -- h. Video BIOS Cacheable - Disabled -- i. Video RAM Cacheable - Disabled -- j. AGP Graphics Aperture - 256 MB (or the next lowest available if 256 MB isn't an option) 3. Adjust EoA's video settings for your GeForce FX 5200: -- a. Right-click on a blank area of the Desktop, then: ----- 1. Click on Properties in the resulting drop-down menu. ----- 2. Click on Settings > Advanced > <NVIDIA card name>. ----- 3. You should now be looking at the NVIDIA management menu. Click on Performance & Quality Settings and under Global driver settings, View: the Advanced settings. ----- 4. Mostly, you want to set Application controlled as the defaults, and initially more things 'off' than 'on'. In particular turn off Vertical Sync if it's initially set to Application-controlled. ----- 5. If you change any settings, don't forget to click on Apply. Then click on OK > OK to exit to the Desktop. -- b. Adjust EoA's video settings. ----- 1. Start EoA and click on OPTIONS and then on VIDEO options, if that's not what you're looking at. ----- 2. Click on Reset to Defaults, and write down where all of the sliders are positioned and which boxes are checked/unchecked. ----- 3. Set Video Resolution at 800x600, and uncheck the Recommended Only, Shadows, and Dynamic Reflections boxes. ----- 4. Set the Video Quality, Texture Quality, Antialiasing, and Anisotropic Filtering sliders all the way to the left (minimum settings). ----- 5. Click on Ok, then quit and restart the game. ----- 6. You may like the video with these settings, but if not, go back to the VIDEO options menu. ----- 7. Move the Video Quality slider to halfway between the left-most and middle tick marks. ----- 8. Click on Ok, then quit and restart the game. ----- 9. If you still don't like the video, go back to the VIDEO options menu. ---- 10. Move the Texture Quality slider to halfway between the left-most and middle tick marks. ---- 11. Click on Ok, then quit and restart the game. ---- 12. Repeat this procedure until Video Quality and Texture Quality are back to their default settings. If you get Esher dressed in black while you're doing this, or any other strange video effects, go back to the previous setting of whatever you changed last. ---- 13. When you've got Video Quality and Texture Quality back to their default settings, use the same procedure to reset the Antialiasing and Anisotropic Filtering sliders. ---- 14. Finally, recheck the Shadows and Dynamic Reflections boxes, in that order, and quitting/restarting in between changes. 4. Install NVIDIA's ForceWare version 81.95 video driver after uninstalling the existing driver. Use Myst V: Installing Video Drivers With Win XP as a template, modifying as necessary for Win 2K. Clear your Internet Explorer caches: -- a. Close all open applications. -- b. Open a single Internet Explorer session. -- c. Click on Tools > Internet Options. -- d. Click on Delete Cookies > OK. -- e. Click on Delete Files (check the 'Delete all offline content' box) > OK. -- f. Click on Clear History > Yes. -- g. Click on OK to exit. Use Windows Explorer to search your hard drive for \temp, \tmp, and \temporary folders, and delete any files in these folders that aren't currently in use: -- a. Click on Tools > Find > Files or Folders. -- b. Type temp or tmp or temporary in the Named: box. -- c. Click on the arrow at the right end of the Look in: box and then click on the disk drive to be searched. -- d. Click on Find Now to start the search. -- e. Click on the temp (or tmp or temporary) folders found to open them. -- f. Delete any files in these folders that aren't currently in use. -- g. Close Windows Explorer. Then, install ForceWare version 81.95, including re-installing DirectX 9.0c. 5. Re-install EoA from a clean boot, using Myst V: Clean Boot Install/Re-install With Win XP as a template. Modify as necessary for Win 2K. BTW, if you don't already have the URL, IBM's information for your IntelliStation M Pro (6868-3M3) is available here. Heimdall Semper ubi sub ubi |

Hi, GH.
I bought this box as is from a dealer. I confess that while I have refurbished it by adding some things, I have not looked at the memory sticks. There are 4, each 256 MB. I ran memtest86 for about 50 minutes. No errors showed up, so I stopped it. I then changed one item in BIOS, the AGP graphics aperture from 64 to 256 MB. I then selected the one item for the nVidia that needed changing -- Vertical Sync to off. Finally I reset the EoA options as you suggested. Results: so far I have been able to move farther than I have before, and no BSOD has occurred. Regrettably, by changing 3 areas, I have no idea which caused the problem. However, for the time being, I am happy. I have rarely been exposed to the range of expertise you have. Clearly, you went to the IBM site and got the manual, looked it over, etc. You knew about the details of the nVidia. I expected you to know about the inner parts of EoA, but your hardware knowledge is impressive. So I thank you for taking the time to do such a thorough job on assembling the suggestions, and, perhaps before you blush enough that I could see it here in Minnesota, I will stop ... cheers, drl ( Mn, Intellistation M Pro 2x 1 GHz, 1 GB, nVidia FX 5200; for Myst V ) |

For whatever the information is worth, I am running a brand-new Dell XPS 600. Pentium D 3.2GHz dual-core processor, 2Gigs of RAM, a dual-nVidia 7800 SLI vidcard setup with a total of 500MB onboard video RAM. This puppy is one of the faster machines out there, and runs Myst V quite well - as a rule. That isn't to say I don't still get BSOD. I do. I've had two of them while running Myst V during the last three weeks.
In both cases, I was in FPS mode - the navigation mode you access by typing "3". It happened when I attempted to rotate my view using the left or right arrow key. So far all other modes and methods of travelling through the universe work ok. The common thread between systems with problems does indeed seem to be nVidia. Now - does that mean that the nVidia drivers/hardware are buggy, or that the game code is buggy? (Or both?) ******** hogarth |

It may well be that there's a "best fit" nvidia driver, just as there was with URU. Can you try rolling back to 77.77? It was definitely more stable than 78.01. (I don't know where we are now).

It quite possibly could be your Power Supply as well. After adding items to your machine, and changing this around, more power is needed from the supply. Check out this Power Supply Calculator, and then look at your power supply to see how it matches up. If the oen that you have currently isn't strong enough, all the items in your computer may not be getting enough power to support while playing the game, which can cause BSODs, and other problems.
