Ok I think this is quite stupid. What kind of company puts out a program that you can't uninstall or have tons of problems trying to uninstall? I have tried all the classic methods of uninstalling: 1) from the Start Program Myst V menu, 2) from the CD, and even from 3) the Windows XP Remove/Edit Progam list. All three give this error:

"A suitable JVM file could not be found. Please select a JVM by selecting its java.exe file."

I've noticed that several other people have posted a similar error but no information has ever been give on how to fix this. Why is that?

My wife has rather enjoyed the Myst series and even installed and played the game through. Now we are having troubles removing the game. This is unexcusable. Get your act together if you expect customers to shell out money to buy your games.

If I do not see some concrete information on how to fix this problem, I will advise my wife and friends never to buy products from UBI again as they turn out shoddy work and don't give proper support.

Yes this post is an unpleasant way of bringing this problem up, but not being able to uninstall a game? That's just plain inexcusable.

I believe the Install program for Myst V: End of Ages includes an option for uninstalling. At least on my Mac, there is a folder in the "Myst V End of Ages" folder that is named "_uninst Myst V". And inside that folder are two files, titled "uninstall.dat" and "uninstall.jar". So at least in the Mac version, uninstallation is covered. HOWEVER, I have noticed that there is a file called "vpd.properties" that remains on the hard disk after an uninstall process is complete. If you find that on your hard disk, I would suggest you trash it manually. It sometimes causes your computer to report that Myst V is still on your system when in fact only "vpd.properties" remains.

Welcome to the Forums!

Sounds like you have a damaged EoA install. You can re-install EoA over the existing install, and then uninstall it. Properly re-installing adds any missing files (including those necessary for uninstalling), establishes the correct Registry entries, etc.

To re-install/uninstall:
-- a. Open Windows Explorer and browse to C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\Cyan Worlds\Myst V End Of Ages. This assumes you originally accepted the EoA install defaults.
-- b. Delete the \Myst V End Of Ages folder.
----- 1. Especially if you have other \Ubisoft or \Cyan Worlds games installed, be careful to delete the \Myst V End Of Ages folder ONLY.
-- c. Search for vpd.properties. It'll probably be in your \Windows folder.
----- 1. If you're positive that no other program uses this file, delete it.
----- 2. If you're NOT positive, rename the file to something like OLD_vpd.properties.
-- d. Browse to C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Local Settings\Application Data\Myst V End of Ages.
----- 1. Delete the \Myst V End of Ages folder ONLY.
-- e. Close Windows Explorer.
-- f. Re-install EoA, and reboot when installation is complete.
-- g. Uninstall EoA using one of the methods below.

There are three primary methods for uninstalling a complete, undamaged install of EoA. Reboot, log into Windows with full Administrator privileges, and close all open applications. Then:

1. In the Start Menu Programs List, go to Ubisoft > CyanWorlds > Myst V, and double-click on the Uninstall Myst V icon.

2. Use Control Panel's Add or Remove Programs.
-- a. Click on Start > Control Panel, then double-click on Add or Remove Programs.
-- b. In the Currently installed programs list, click on the Myst V entry.
-- c. Click on Change (or Change/Remove).
-- d. If prompted to confirm the removal of the program, click on Yes.
-- e. Close Control Panel back to the Desktop, and reboot.

If that doesn't work and if you see Change or Repair in addition to Uninstall for Myst V, click on those options and follow the Wizard's instructions. Then try uninstalling again.

3. Run EoA's Uninstaller.exe. Assuming you did a default install:
-- a. Click on Start > Run
-- b. Browse to C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\Cyan Worlds\Myst V End Of Ages\_uninst.
-- c. Double-click on Uninstaller.exe to put it in the Open: box.
-- d. Click on OK to run it.

If none of those three methods are successful, try a third-party uninstaller. Examples (some free, some not) are:
-- Revo Uninstaller
-- Smarty Uninstaller Pro 2008
-- Mcafee UnInstaller
-- Your Uninstaller! 2008
-- Brute Force Uninstaller
-- Free Uninstaller

You can also try the three primary methods with Windows running in Safe Mode. To enter Safe Mode, press the F8 key multiple times during bootup. For more information, search Windows Help for "safe mode".

If none of the above are successful, you'll have to use "brute force" to uninstall EoA. This involves editing your Registry using Regedit - be very careful to follow the instructions *exactly*!

1. Assuming you did a default EoA install:
-- a. Carry out steps a. through e. under "To re-install/uninstall:", above.
-- b. Start RegEdit.
----- 1. Click on Start > Run.
----- 2. Type regedit in the Open: box.
----- 3. Click on OK.
-- c. Back up your Registry. If you need to restore the Registry, find the backup file and double-click on it.
----- 1. On the top task bar, click on File > Export.
----- 2. Choose a location and enter a name for the backup file.
----- 3. Click on Save and wait for the process to complete (cursor re-appears).
-- d. In the left-hand pane, click on My Computer to highlight it.
-- e. On the top task bar, click on Edit > Find.
-- f. Type Myst V in the Find what: box.
-- g. Click on Find Next.
-- h. Delete the Myst V entry.
----- 1. Click on the entry to highlight it.
----- 2. Press the Del key or click on Edit > Delete.
-- i. Press F3 to find the next Myst V entry, and delete it.
-- j. Repeat until no further entries are found.
-- k. When you see Finished searching through the registry., click on OK.
-- l. Close Regedit back to the Desktop.
-- m. Reboot.

2. Log into Windows with full Administrator privileges, close all open applications, and check your Registry for errors. This should also pick up stray Myst V entries. Windows doesn't have a built-in Registry diagnosis and repair utility, so here are some other options. Run whichever utility you use until no more repairable errors are discovered, and reboot when finished. (Note that if you've never cleaned up your Registry, you'll probably find *LOTS* of errors!)

-- Rose City Software's Registry First Aid - not free
-- VCOM's Fix-It Utilities SystemRegistry-RegistryFixer utility - not free

-- Toni Arts' freeware Registry cleaner EasyCleaner 2.0
-- Wise Registry Cleaner - free version
