Hi guys...only just found out that it is possible to play on some win 98 systems....delighted to here it as i am a long time myst fan with no way of affording a new system at the moment. So would appreciate someone letting me know if my system is likely to cope ! At the moment i have installed the demo but it is encountering the above error message as soon as I try to play. Techno-babble suggestions, some or all of which may be required (but only if you really want to play EoA):

1. You have only 256 MB of system RAM. This is just barely adequate to properly run Win XP, let alone Myst V in addition. You should install at least an additional 256 MB of RAM. This may or may not solve the EoA problem, but your whole system will run *much* better!

2. Check your system RAM for errors using a utility like Memtest86 (free), available here. Click on 'Download - Pre-Compiled Memtest86 v3.2 installable from Windows and DOS' under 'Memtest86 3.2 Release (11/Nov/2004)'. If Memtest indicates problems, go to your BIOS's Chipset Features Setup page or whatever page the memory variables like latency are on, and load the BIOS defaults. Then try Memtest again. If you still get errors, you've got bad RAM.

3. Use your anti-virus software to do a complete scan of your hard disk(s). This is the 'start it and let it crank' type of scan!

Do complete spyware and adware scans of your hard disk(s). I use and recommend:
-- Spybot - Search & Destroy
-- Ad-aware SE

Both have free versions!

Note that Spybot and Ad-aware DO NOT protect against viruses!

4. Some older video chipsets (for example, the GeForce4 MX 440 chipset) do not work well with the latest NVIDIA drivers. Try the version 45.23 driver, then if 45.23 doesn't help, try version 56.64. Both versions are available here for Win 98SE. (DO NOT use a "download accelerator" or "download helper" utility to download any driver or DirectX.) Install as follows:

Clear your Internet Explorer caches.
-- a. Close all open applications.
-- b. Open a single Internet Explorer session.
-- c. Click on Tools > Internet Options.
-- d. Click on Delete Cookies > OK.
-- e. Click on Delete Files (check the 'Delete all offline content' box) > OK.
-- f. Click on Clear History > Yes.
-- g. Click on OK to exit.

Use Windows Explorer to search all hard disks for \temp, \tmp, and \temporary folders, and delete any files in these folders that aren't currently in use. If Windows complains when you try to delete a file, leave that file alone!
-- a. Click on Tools > Find > Files or Folders.
-- b. Type temp or tmp or temporary in the Named: box.
-- c. Click on the arrow at the right end of the Look in: box and then click on the disk drive to be searched.
-- d. Click on Find Now to start the search.
-- e. Click on the temp (or tmp or temporary) folders found to open them.
-- f. Delete any files in these folders that aren't currently in use.

Then, install the new NVIDIA driver.
-- a. Re-install DirectX 9.0c, available here.

-- c. Uninstall the existing video driver using Control Panel's Add/Remove Programs.

-- e. If prompted, cancel the installation of the display adapter during bootup. Or, if given a choice of default drivers to install, select 'Standard PCI Graphics Adapter (VGA)', and reboot.
-- f. Using Ctrl-Alt-Del, close all background processes except for Explorer and Systray.

NOTE: Especially if you have only a software firewall, disable your Internet connection before doing step f. An Internet connection without a firewall is an open invitation to hackers!

-- h. Browse to the driver file you downloaded, and double-click on it to put it in the Open box.
-- i. Click on OK to start the install process.
-- j. Follow the Wizard's instructions to complete the installation. Reboot when prompted.

5. Download and install the latest sound driver for your C-Media chipset. This driver should be available from your PC or motherboard manufacturer's website. Be certain to remove the existing sound driver using Control Panel's Add/Remove Programs and reboot, before installing the updated driver.

6. Since you're short of memory, close all unnecessary processes and applications running in the background, except for Explorer and Systray, before starting EoA.
-- a. While holding down the Ctrl and Alt keys, press the Del key ONCE (twice reboots) to bring up the Close Program list.
