Stop me if you've heard this one:

I'll have been playing the game for a certain amount of time (seems to be generally 15-30 minutes). At some point, things start getting *very* laggy, until finally either: a) the screen freezes and computer must be reset, or b) the computer does a hard reboot. When the computer hard reboots, Microsoft's Crash Analysis tells me its a Windows STOP error caused by an "Unknown" device driver.

Places where crash has highest chance of occurring:
Toldemer - Telescope control room
Nobelen - Looking through the magnifying glass above the shelter

There have also been cases where entire structures disappear, or allow you to see through them. These instances are harbingers to a crash, but if I CTRL+ALT+DEL out of the game, I can usually kill it before it crashes my computer.

I have already tried several of the suggestions posted in this forum:
- Turned off Shadows, Dynamic Reflections, and Anisotropic Filtering (all other video settings are max)
- Reset my paging file to 1024 on both HDs
- Updated DirectX and video card drivers
- Killing all major background processes, including Norton, MS Antispyware, and Instant Messengers

Note that, even though you've got a fairly powerful video chipset, you may well not be able to max out any of the settings for EoA. As in "(all other video settings are max)".

Suggestions:

1. Re-install your video driver as detailed in Myst V: Installing Video Drivers With Win XP.

2. Set these line items in your system BIOS (if the BIOS has them) as follows:
-- a. Assign IRQ to VGA - Enabled
-- b. VGA palette snooping - Disabled
-- c. PCI Latency Timer - 128
-- d. Video BIOS Shadowing - Disabled
-- e. Video RAM Shadowing - Disabled
-- f. Uncacheable Speculative Write Combining (USWC) Options - All disabled
-- g. PnP O/S Installed - Enabled
-- h. Video BIOS Cacheable - Disabled
-- i. Video RAM Cacheable - Disabled
-- j. AGP Graphics Aperture - 128 MB (or the next lowest available if 128 MB isn't an option)
-- k. AGP Fast Write - Disabled

3. Access the Catalyst Control Panel, and make some setting changes. Before changing anything, note what you started with, so that you can go back to those settings if desired. If they exist, set your menu choices as closely as possible to:
-- Anisotropic filtering (AF) and antialiasing (AA) 'off' or 'controlled by application'. If AF or AA optimization is a choice, set it to 'off' or 'none'.
-- Trilinear optimization to 'off', 'none', or 'controlled by application'.
-- Vertical sync to 'controlled by application' or 'off'.
-- Image setting midway between 'performance' and 'quality'.

If these general video setting changes don't help, adjust the game's video settings for your 9800 PRO:
-- a. Start EoA and click on OPTIONS and then on VIDEO options, if that's not what you're looking at.
-- b. Click on Reset to Defaults, and write down where all of the sliders are positioned and which boxes are checked/unchecked.
-- c. Set Video Resolution at 800x600, and uncheck the Recommended Only, Shadows, and Dynamic Reflections boxes.
-- d. Set the Video Quality, Texture Quality, Antialiasing, and Anisotropic Filtering sliders all the way to the left (minimum settings).
-- e. Click on Ok, then quit and restart the game.
-- f. You may like the video with these settings, but if not, go back to the VIDEO options menu.
-- g. Move the Video Quality slider to halfway between the left-most and middle tick marks.
-- h. Click on Ok, then quit and restart the game.
-- i. If you still don't like the video, go back to the VIDEO options menu.
-- j. Move the Texture Quality slider to halfway between the left-most and middle tick marks.
-- j. Click on Ok, then quit and restart the game.
-- k. Repeat this procedure until Video Quality and Texture Quality are back to their default settings. If you get something flaky while you're doing this, go back to the previous setting of whatever you changed last.
-- l. When you've got Video Quality and Texture Quality back to their default settings, use the same procedure to reset the Antialiasing and Anisotropic Filtering sliders.
-- m. Finally, recheck the Shadows and Dynamic Reflections boxes, in that order, and quitting/restarting in between changes.

Thanks for the reply. I tried all your suggestions, and it looks like the Anti-Aliasing setting was the culprit. I've shut it off, and now everything is running smoothly.
