Install of EoA was good & I've updated all drivers. First noticed an issue when I ran into Esher the second time - he was dressed all in black. Figured he was trying a new look and went on. Became clear as the game went on that various other textures were missing. My cursor would disappear, symbols on the wall would disappear and Leesha's journals would turn into yellow pixel noise. I could always just exit or turn down my settings and they would come back.

Now I'm in Laki'ahn and the pedestal area is a big black circle, the house is a giant black mass (I can't even see it!) and the water has a bright orange & yellow pixel border. I've upgraded, defragged, restarted & performed sacrifices to everything I can think of. Nothing helps.

Anyone have any ideas what could be causing this? I don't think it's a bug since no one else is reporting this type of issue.

Be sure to use the camera (shiny globe in upper right corner of the screen) to regularly to save your game progress. If you do so, you can click on the rust-red journal next to the camera to restore a previous game position.

While your GeForce4 Ti 4200 only supports DirectX 8, you should be able to satisfactorily play EoA. But you must have DirectX 9.0c and the correct video driver installed, and the game's video settings must be adjusted properly.

Some of the older NVIDIA chipsets don't play nicely with the version 78.01 ForceWare Graphics driver, and yours may be one of those chipsets. Try installing the version 45.23 driver, available here (scroll way down), as detailed in Myst V: Installing Video Drivers With Win XP. This is an older driver version, but maybe a better fit for you than the latest version.

Whichever video driver you have installed, the game's video settings must be properly adjusted:
-- a. Start EoA and click on OPTIONS and then on VIDEO options, if that's not what you're looking at.
-- b. Click on Reset to Defaults, and write down where all of the sliders are positioned and which boxes are checked/unchecked.
-- c. Set Video Resolution at 800x600, and uncheck the Recommended Only, Shadows, and Dynamic Reflections boxes.
-- d. Set the Video Quality, Texture Quality, Antialiasing, and Anisotropic Filtering sliders all the way to the left (minimum settings).
-- e. Click on Ok, then quit and restart the game.
-- f. You may like the video with these settings, but if not, go back to the VIDEO options menu.
-- g. Move the Video Quality slider to halfway between the left-most and middle tick marks.
-- h. Click on Ok, then quit and restart the game.
-- i. If you still don't like the video, go back to the VIDEO options menu.
-- j. Move the Texture Quality slider to halfway between the left-most and middle tick marks.
-- k. Click on Ok, then quit and restart the game.
-- l. Repeat this procedure until Video Quality and Texture Quality are back to their default settings. If you get Esher dressed in black while you're doing this, or any other strange video effects, go back to the previous setting of whatever you changed last.
-- m. When you've got Video Quality and Texture Quality back to their default settings, use the same procedure to reset the Antialiasing and Anisotropic Filtering sliders.
-- n. Finally, recheck the Shadows and Dynamic Reflections boxes, in that order, and quitting/restarting in between changes.

You can also try increasing Video Resolution, but I'd recommend leaving it set at 800x600.

The old driver did the trick. Was able to crank up most of the settings so it still looks relatively good. And, yes, I have thought of a new graphics card. But I'm currently living in denial. Some time in the future, though...
