Hi everyone. I have been trawling the forums trying to find answers to the following questions:

a) why is it that when I quit and then start the game at a later date, none of the information I think I should have is saved; I appear where I left off, but the symbols I loaded into the pedestal are gone, and the doors in the rest age are all closed so I can't get anywhere other than where I happened to finish off. This has gotten me stuck in Noloben, and the bottom of the great shaft (where the linking book associated with Noloben in the rest age leads to), and I can't seem to get out.

b) Why on earth can't I save my game when I want to, or save multiple game threads. I have seen other posts about a "camera", the icon of which (blue globe, top right of the screen when you move the cursor up there) I have not seen since I quit for the first time.

Is this really the way the game is supposed to run? Please let me know if this is something unusual, or if I should get used to it. I just started, so I am asking questions now, at the risk of looking stupid, to avoid heartbreak later down the line.

tx,

F3

When you exit the game by clicking on the [X] icon in the upper right corner of the screen and then on Quit, Myst V autosaves. When you restart the game by clicking on Continue on the Main Menu, you should start where you were when you last quit.

However, you can manually save your progress during game play. This is done by using the Camera.

First, pick up your Player Journal and the Camera. They're some of the first things you find, on the floor after going through the only functional door of seven and down several flights of stairs.

After you've got it, the Camera is the shiny blue globe in the upper right corner of the screen, third icon from the right.
-- a. If you're in the mode in which the screen view follows mouse movement, right-click to lock the view.
-- b. Move the cursor to the upper right corner of the screen. The line of icons should appear.
-- c. Click on the Camera to save your game progress to date.
-- d. You can go back to the places where you did saves, with all game progress up to that point intact, by clicking on the rust-red book next to the Camera and selecting the desired save.

Hey, thanks so much for your prompt response. I read your post on a different thread about the camera function, which was instructive. My problem, however, it that after I played the game for the first time, it autosaved as I left, and then the next time I entered the game, there was no main menu, I just went straight to where I left off. My current game has my physical position saved, but none of the symbols I've saved are retained, and all of the items I picked up, including camera and save-game book, are gone. When I click on main menu, it simply starts a new game without showing me a menu. I tried to start a new game, and use the camera to save this new game, but when I restarted the game, it just took me back to my corrupted file.

Any suggestions?

The first thing you should see when you start EoA by clicking on the Desktop icon is the Main Menu. And your autosave isn't working properly. Sounds like you may have a corrupted game installation.

Suggestions:

1. Right-click on the EoA Desktop icon, and click on Properties in the resulting drop-down menu. If you accepted the EoA install defaults, you should see "C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\Cyan Worlds\Myst V End Of Ages\eoa.exe" in the Target: box and "C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\Cyan Worlds\Myst V End Of Ages\" in the Start in: box. If that's not what you see, type in a correction (including the quotes). Then click on Apply > OK, and click on the icon to start EoA.

2. Re-install EoA from a clean boot, as detailed under Installing and Re-Installing EoA, "6. Clean-boot EoA Re-install, Previous Installation" in Myst V: Clean Boot Install/Re-install With Win XP. It would be a really good idea to carry out sections 1 through 5 under Overall Windows and Hard Disk Tune-up before re-installing.
