Okay, I want to get some input before I go out and buy the next generation of NVIDA video card and/or a new soundcard.

I installed MYST V just fine. But, right off, when Yeesha or Escher came on, the video was jerky and their voices were muffled. In order to even barely hear them, I have to crank the volume up to where the Atrus opening and Yeesha's journals blast my eardrums. I've tried loading new sound drivers, cutting back the hardware acceleration/video quality/texture quality. I've also tried turning down the sound effects and ambient sound while still leaving voice at max but Escher's monologs are still practically lost in the background sound. I've run the DxDiag tests...the report is below. Please help the clueless one!

you have a decent video card there, probably no need to upgrade it to fix your problem.

first things first: do you have any background apps running while you are playing the game? if so, shut them down!

second: update your video driver. it looks like the one you are using is pretty old.

I tried updating it, but, when I searched, the updater said there wasn't a better one than the one installed. And I've shut down everything I can find.

the updater is worthless!

click on "download drivers" on the silver bar near the top of the page. then click on "grapics driver", then "geforce" then on "Win XP". download and install and see what happens!

Okay, I downloaded the newest driver they had there (72.14) and installed it. But, when the computer restarted, it locked up and wouldn't start again until I reversed my settings. Now what?

Edit: Tried again, this time, deleting my old drivers first like the NVIDA site suggested. This time MYST wouldn't run at all. I did a system restore to yesterday so I'm now back where I started from. God, I hate being so computer clueless!

anyway, your system locking up after installing new video drivers is not a good sign. those drivers have been around for a while now. the ones you currently have are from back in June of 2004.

how about some more history here. do you run a lot of other games? if so which ones? do you have any problems with them? is your system stable other than the problems you are having with this game?

Very strange...unless somehow the blasted Windows update changed things. I'll try doing the professional edition and see what that does.

I've played Uru and Myst 4 on this computer. Aside from a few lip-synic issues, no problems.

Edit: Tried the Professional XP and it installed just fine. Ran MYST V again and there is much improvement on the video. However, the voices are still muted and/or have a reverb quality which makes them very hard to make out. Anything else I can try?

Did you remember to UN-ininstall the privious Nvidia drivers or did you simply install the new one ontop of the old one?

Also doing a chkdisk and defrag might help(if you have Nortons speed disk and disk doctor its even better). anyway of you dont have "Norton utilities"
open "my computer" rightclik on you "local disk(C" im asuming that where you installed Myst V. go to properties, then tools and you have the option of running a check_disk or a defragmentation.

you should also try and update you sound card driver. that really helped me. Especially if you have a soundblaster card.
and if you still have problems try hitting, ctrl, ALT del, and se how many processes are running. I have mine down to about 28. Terminate ANY unwanted processe from there

Soundcard driver was the very first thing I updated. If paring down processes and the other stuff doesn't work, should I get a new one?

glad to hear that you got the video drivers to install. it sounds like that fixed the issue with the choppiness in the in-game video steams, which would be the fault of your video drivers.

i'm looking at the info about your sound card and it is listed as a "C-Media Rear Panel Audio", which i am not familiar with. however, you say you managed to find new drivers for it, and that you updated them already?

the Myst V system requirements do recommend an Audigy soundcard for the game. going out and buiying an Audigy card may, or may not fix your problem. there is no way to know until you try it.

for now, i'd do what lars suggested - run a defrag (the checkdisk isn't quite as useful, but won't hurt) on the hard drive where the game is stored, as well as on the drive where your operating system is installed (if you have a partitioned hard drive).

oh, and i'm wondering - what kind of speakers are hooked up to your system? 2 speakers? 2 with a subwoofer (2.1)? 4? 4.1? 5.1? let me know...

Updated the drivers first thing. I'll go check out some sound cards and, if defrag etc. doesn't cut it, I'll spring for a new one.

Okay, we're better but not perfect.

I ran checkdisk and defrag, then managed to pare my processes down to 28. I then changed the audio from Hardware + EAX to just plain Hardware. I figured out that the reverb was because my front and back speakers were getting out of sync on that setting.

I've played through the beginning to completion of Tagihra now. The video of characters is better except for Diebo. Esher is still jumpy there. I can hear their voices okay, but I have to keep the volume control with me because, at the settings where the voices are clear with the video and projector, Yeesha's voice in narrating her journals is deafening.

Is there anything else I can do or should I just bite the bullet and buy a new soundcard?

the only thing i can think of is to try toggling the "digital ouput only" option and see if it makes any difference.

try changing it to the opposite of what it is currently set to and see what happens.

there is no way to know if an audigy card will work or not until you try it - and they aren't cheap. even the "value" version will likely cost you over $50. so - don't do it unless you are okay with it if it doesn't fix the problem. on the bright side though - it will probably give you better quality sound than your current auido device.

You may be able to get a 5.1 soundblaster Live!. I had the 4.1, then the 5.1 and now an audigy 2. It's well worth it.
