Hi, I hope one of you experts can help me. Myst V loads and runs on my computer, but the motion is jerky and makes me feel ill. The most annoying problem is the mouse; it moves in jerks and it is very difficult to move it to a particular place quickly; I am always overshooting. If it's not too much of a pain, could someone look at this log? Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks. What are the manufacturer and exact model number of your PC?
Heimdall Semper ubi sub ubi |

It's a custom built system put together at my local computer store. It has an AMI BIOS Ver. 8.0.9 and the motherboard is an ASUS P4P800-VM (which is probably way more than you wanted to know).

That's exactly what I wanted to know.
Suggestions: 1. Install ATI's Catalyst 5.11 video driver, including re-installing DirectX 9.0c, as detailed in Myst V: Installing Video Drivers With Win XP. 2. Re-install EoA from a clean boot, as detailed in Myst V: Clean Boot Install/Re-install With Win XP. Heimdall Semper ubi sub ubi |

Thanks for the links; I've been meaning to upgrade my driver, but was always too lazy to do it.
I have done both of your suggestions, but it doesn't seem to help. I can make moving around smoother by going to windowed mode, but looking around or moving the mouse is still pretty jerky. When I run the Task Manager with EoA, the task eoa.exe is always using 95-99% of CPU time, even when I have the video/audio control screen up. But I have a 2.6GHz Pentium 4! I have upped the VM size to 1024 Mb, but it is probably fragmented. (Later edit: Or maybe not. I just ran defrag and analyzed the disk. It said the page file was 1Gb with only one fragment.) What do you think I am missing! (BTW, thanks for your help so far!) Lewis This message has been edited. Last edited by: ljamesljames, |

Try the following:
1. Reset your virtual memory paging file size as follows. Before changing your paging file settings, note what you started with, so that you can go back to those settings if desired. Be certain that you're logged into Windows as an Administrator or a member of the Administrators group, then: -- a. Click Start, right-click My Computer, and then click Properties. -- b. In the System Properties dialog box, click the Advanced tab. -- c. In the Performance pane, click Settings. -- d. In the Performance Options dialog box, click the Advanced tab. -- e. In the Virtual memory pane, click Change. -- f. Under Drive , click the drive that contains the paging file you want to change. -- g. Under Paging file size for selected drive, click Custom size. -- h. Change both Initial size and Maximum size to 1024, the proper value in megabytes. -- i. Click Set, and then click OK. -- j. Click OK to close the Performance Options dialog box, and then click OK to close the System Properties dialog box. Close everything back to the Desktop. -- k. Reboot, and play EoA. 2. If you have lots of processes and applications running in the background, they could be causing the EoA problem. Use Windows Task Manager to close everything except for Explorer.exe, Ctfmon.exe, and whatever your hardware needs: ----- 1. Press Ctrl+Alt+Del once, and then click on Task Manager. ----- 2. Click on the Applications tab. ----- 3. Click on the desired application to highlight it. ----- 4. Click on End Task. ----- 5. Repeat this procedure until all unnecessary background applications are closed, including your anti-virus program and software firewall. ----- 6. Click on the Processes tab. ----- 7. Click on the desired process to highlight it. ----- 8. Click on End Process. ----- 9. Repeat this procedure until all unnecessary background processes are closed. If you aren't sure which processes can be safely closed, check out the AnswersThatWork Task List Programs index. The most common tasks are described, and which ones are essential and which can be safely closed are noted. ---- 10. Play EoA. Note: DO NOT leave your Internet connection active after doing this, especially if you have only a software firewall. An active connection with no firewall is an open invitation to hackers, who are most assuredly not your friends! BTW, if you don't already have the URL, all of the ASUS Support downloads for your P4P800-VM motherboard are available here. On the left-hand panel under Download, type P4P800-VM in the Input Model to Search box, Select Category as All, and click on the SEARCH INFO box. Heimdall Semper ubi sub ubi |

Thanks again. I set the VM page file as you suggested, and have killed off most other processes (except Norton). I'm afraid I choked on the idea of updating my BIOS.
I notice that if I am in EoA in windowed mode and do an Alt-Ctrl-Del, when I move the mouse outside the EoA window it speeds up even though the game is still running. I don't think it would help to add more memory. Maybe the only answer is to get the latest and greatest ATI card. Lewis |

Kill off Norton as well!
Heimdall Semper ubi sub ubi |
|||
|
Yes. Norton commonly uses upward os 100MB of RAM for it's Proxy Service alone, combign that with the 40-50MB that it uses idling for Antispyware and other stuff, and your losing about 150MB of ram to one program alone, which can severly cause Myst V to lag. |
