Hello all,
Please bear with me as your dealing with a technophobic moron.
When I install Myst V on my laptop, all goes well. The install runs all the way through and I am told that it has installed correctly.
When I go to play the game though, I can get all the way through the company logos and up to the "new game" player screen. When I choose player one the screen flickers a bit then goes completely black. No cursor, no nothing. I can't even ctrl/alt/delete my way out. All I can do is turn off the computer. I've read a few forums that say you need to update your graphics driver and I did this from the ATI website but that didn't work either. I would greatly appreciate any help you might be able to give. Thanks.

Technophobic moron or not, if you can properly follow step-by-step instructions, you'll be OK.

Your notebook is shown in the DxDiag report as a Presario X1400 (PA129PA#AKL). This translates on the HP website to a Compaq Presario X1410AP.

Suggestions:

1. You have only 256 MB of available system Random Access Memory (RAM). This is barely enough to run Win XP properly, let alone an additional application like EoA. You should install, or have installed, at least an additional 256 MB of RAM. If you want to do it yourself, see HP Pavilion and Compaq Presario Notebook PCs - Memory Specifications and Upgrading RAM and HP Notebook PCs - Steps for Removing and Replacing Memory Modules. The HP Parts Store has a 256 MB "memory module" available, part number 355925-001.

2. Install the latest driver for your Mobility Radeon 9200 video chipset.
-- a. Download the latest driver from HP, available here. This is version 7.98-040120a-014371C B, SP30204.exe, 34.46 MB, released 4/10/05. Note the hard drive folder to which you download SP30204.exe. Install as follows:
----- 1. Click on Start > Run.
----- 2. Browse to SP30204.exe, and double-click on it to put it in the Open box.

-- b. If the HP driver doesn't help, install the ATI Catalyst 5.11 version intended for video chipsets integrated on the motherboard. All Catalyst drivers are available from ATI starting here. Click on Drivers and Software > Windows XP Drivers and Software > Motherboards with ATI Graphics > CATALYST 5.11 Windows XP - Motherboard/IGP Drivers. Preferably, download "Display Driver, Control Panel, GART Driver, South Bridge driver" package, 28.4 MB, released 11/11/05. Install as detailed under INSTALLING ATI RADEON DRIVERS WITH WIN XP in Myst V: Installing Video Drivers With Win XP.

3. Download and install the latest driver from HP for your SoundMAX Digital Audio chipset, available here. This is version 5.12.01.5250 , SP29882.exe , 19.31 MB, released 3/18/05. Note the hard drive folder to which you download SP29882.exe . Install as follows:
----- 1. Click on Start > Run.
----- 2. Browse to SP29882.exe , and double-click on it to put it in the Open box.
----- 3. Click on OK to start the installation process.
----- 4. Follow the installation Wizard's instructions. Accept the install defaults.
----- 5. Reboot when driver installation is complete.

4. Re-install EoA as detailed in Myst V: Clean Boot Install/Re-install With Win XP.
