I also had the stack error. I installed game on another computer running Vista without the service pack and it installed correctly. I then transferred the file as stated in another reply to the Vista SP1 computer and it worked. Thanks for the help. Mellina

Good work Erik.am!

Can you, or someone post a ZIP file containing the entire contents of the "C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Local Settings\Application Data\Myst V End of Ages" folder? Then people, including me, can easily make the game SP1 compatible without having a XP machine on hand.

Thanks,
Jerome

mrdjcool,

Is your account, one with full administrative privileges and is it setted for you to be able to see all hidden files ?

Did you check under C:\Program Files\Ubisoft to see if Myst 5 shows as installed ?

Have you tried a search for Myst 5 on your pc ?

I am sure it would take much more than just a couple of user files to play Myst V for free. A zipped set will be highly appreciated.

I would be willing to send the files if it's allowed... Heimdall?
It's just the files that include the initialisation settings and saved game, not actual game files. So I hope that's not a problem. It's the only way for people to get Myst V up and running when they only have Vista SP1.

First, read the "5. Legal Information" section of EoA's readme.txt, found on the DVD or on the first CD.

What you then do is your own responsibility. But I'd point out that whatever you do is best done via Private Messaging, as in Go > Personal Zone > Private Messaging.

Any archives (ZIP, LZH, LHA, GZ, CAB, RAR, etc.) containing EoA files from C:\Documents and Settings and/or C:\Program Files posted in an open Forum will be deleted.

That's a very strict answer, while I think Ubi already could have patched this issue easily.

Please PM me, if someone could send me the files. It worked!

Thanks, Jerome

Hey there!

I've tried to set up the file which was forwarded to me but I still can't seem to get the game to work. This is what I've done so far:
Smash
- downloaded all the file updates for Vista (4 of them)

- installed RunFirst

- changed the screen resolution

- installed from desktop icon and not from disc autoplay

- made the dir: c:\users\username\appdata..etc (I'm not at my desktop so I don't remember the correct path, but it was the right)

- I uninstalled, clean install, boot without disc in

- everything that was listed, I did, and it still didn't work... Frown! Can someone help me figure this out...

I'm at work at the moment and won't be able to check my email until this evening. If someone can put the steps down...(I know they are but I obviously missed something). Perhaps a PM...

Thanks in advance!!

You should not have to make that AppData directory. It's a Windows directory and when Myst V is installed, a directory for Myst V is automatically made in the AppData folder. So you shouldn't create that folder yourself, but you should look for the one that has been made by the installer.
Turn hidden files and system files on, so that you can search for the folder in your user directory.

Has anyone noticed that erik's link is not a live link? I get "Go to this address" in my URL box if it is clicked. If it is copied and pasted in the URL box, when clicking on the URL itself, it changes back to this web page. It doesn't go to Cyan Worlds.

That's interesting.

I'm runing Win XP SP3 and using IE 6 SP3, and can download Myst5InitFiles.zip from http://cho.cyan.com/patches/Myst5InitFiles.zip by clicking on the link, with no problems.

I have WindowsXP SP2 with IE 6 SP2 and had no problem dowloading the zip files. (as a backup in case I get Vista, one of these days)

I more inclined to wait for the Windows 10(2010) version. Winky

Btw, if you intend to install IE 7, you need to install SP3 first...

Some of the infos found re: SP3

One of the proposed fix.

5. On the Get the latest updates page of the installation program, click to clear the Install the latest updates for Internet Explorer and the Microsoft Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool (recommended) check box, and then click Next.

My case:
Because I had accepted "the Install the latest updates for Internet Explorer and the Microsoft Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool (recommended)", I had to do a full destructive Windows XP reinstallation because I tried installing IE 7 before getting SP3 and it created a mess. I was not even able to rollback to IE 6.

Part of the mess:
if you go to this Microsoft page, it says we can get IE 7 SP2 but I sure did not test it after the last full reinstall..

For the record and unless he's gotten a new machine recently, wstrohm is running a PowerMac G5.

Also for the record and after numerous installs (I consult), I've found that the least-obnoxious way to install Win XP SP3 is to:
-- a. Run Windows Update and install at least the Critical Updates, EXCEPT for SP3.
-- b. Download WindowsXP-KB936929-SP3-x86-ENU.exe from Windows XP Service Pack 3 Network Installation Package for IT Professionals and Developers.
-- c. Burn WindowsXP-KB936929-SP3-x86-ENU.exe to a CD or DVD.
-- d. Install SP3 from Safe Mode using the CD or DVD.

Or, another method is the procedure detailed in Build an XP SP3 Recovery Disc.

I don't know why it isn't working for you. It's just a regular download, nothing special about it.

Perhaps if you try it again? Or otherwise you could try to install another browser, or use another computer to download the zip file (in a library for example).

That is correct, and also for the record it is still behaving as I wrote above, and it is the only URL I have ever pasted that does that. (I run Safari 3.1.2 under Mac OS X 10.4.11.)
Also, FWIW, when I try http://cho.cyan.com/patches, I get a "Forbidden" (403) error. Going to http://cho.cyan.com, I get the Riven scene "Cho..."

[Edit: Just checked and found eight (8) copies of that patch on my HD. They weren't there this morning...????]

I have a new Dell XPS420 running Vista Ultimate which also gives Exception type: Access violation, Call stack (14 levels): 0x76094911 to 0x6E42B187 every time I try to play Myst V. What is causing this? Is Myst V compatible with Vista? The Media Center update changes the code numbers, but not the error message. Any advice? pickettjm@msn.com
