Hello,

I can't seem to run Myst V on Vista (32 bits). The installation went fine, I didn't get any errors there, but when I click on "play" to start the game, I immediately get a stack error.

After a bit of searching on Google I learnt that for some people Myst V didn't work if they installed it on Vista SP1, but only if they installed it on Vista without the SP.

My computer is just new and it had automatically been updated with SP1, and downgrading is not an option for me. I have the latest drivers for my video card. I tried to do a clean boot re-install, but to no avail.

I hope someone can help me out with this. Thanks in advance.

- Erik

Welcome to the Forums!

Suggestions:

In general:
-- Always log into Vista with full Administrator privileges, and close all open applications before starting EoA.
-- Never boot up with the EoA DVD in any drive.
-- If the EoA DVD autostarts when inserted into the drive, cancel back to the Desktop.

1. If you aren't doing so, try using the Desktop icon to start EoA. Do NOT use the DVD menu option to start the game.

2. Set your Desktop resolution to 800x600, then start EoA using the Desktop icon.

3. Some programs run properly on Vista only if you run them with full Administrator privileges and with the Run as administrator option enabled. See How to use User Account Control (UAC) in Windows Vista.

4. If you haven't already done so, download and install these updates:
-- December 2007 Windows Vista Application Compatibility Update.
-- An update is available that improves the compatibility and reliability of Windows Vista
-- Four Must-Have Vista Updates. The fourth update mentioned, KB936710, applies only to SLI and CrossFire systems (two NVIDIA or AMD/ATI graphics cards).

5. Try what's called out in:
-- a. How to troubleshoot program compatibility issues in Windows Vista
-- b. Advanced methods to troubleshoot a program that does not run as expected after it is installed on Windows Vista
-- c. How to troubleshoot issues that may prevent a program from being installed correctly on a Windows Vista-based computer

6. If you installed EoA to a drive other than C:, uninstall EoA, then re-install the game to your drive C:.

7. You should have installed EoA from a clean boot using the following procedure. If you did not do so, try it.
-- a. Uninstall EoA using the Windows Add or Remove Programs utility.
-- b. Use Windows Explorer to find vpd.properties.
----- 1. Rename the file to something like OLD_vpd.properties. If you don't rename it, the install Wizard will tell you that EoA is already installed.
----- 2. Or, you can delete vpd.propertiesif you're certain that no other programs also use it. If other programs do use the file, deleting it will probably cause the other programs not to run.
-- c. Do step 1 in How to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot in Windows Vista.
-- d. Re-install EoA.
-- e. Do step 7 in How to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot in Windows Vista.

8. If EoA starts and you then get a stack error, take a look at Myst V: Main Branch and Access Violation/Stack Error Fixes With Win XP, under Access Violation/Stack Error, sections 2 and 3.

9. Set your processor affinity so that EoA runs using only one CPU core (or only one pair of cores). Refer to:
-- a. Monitoring and Optimizing Apps on Dual-Core and Multiprocessor Systems. To use the Task Manager method:
----- 1. Click on the EoA Desktop start icon to start the game.
----- 2. Press Alt+Tab (both keys at the same time) to go back to the Desktop.
----- 3. Open Task Manager by pressing Ctrl+Alt+Del (all 3 keys at the same time).
----- 4. Click on the Processes tab, and right-click on the eoa.exe process listing.
----- 5. Click on Set Affinity..., and uncheck the appropriate boxes.
----- 6. Click on OK, and close Task Manager.
----- 7. Alt+Tab back to EoA, and close back to the Desktop.
----- 8. Click on the EoA Desktop icon to start the game.
-- b. Both methods for setting affinity masks as described in ImageCFG.
-- c. RunFirst.

Thank you for your response. I tried out all of those things, but nothing solved it.

Some others mentioned that Myst V didn't work for them if they installed it directly in Vista SP1, but only if they installed it before they installed the Service Pack. It looks like something in the service pack makes it impossible to run End of Ages, unless you installed the game before the service pack...

I do hope there is a solution! Thanks in advance.

Question to Heimdall about Erik's problem.

Even if Vista SP1 came preinstalled on his computer, can it still be deleted, followed by a Myst 5 installation and last/followed by doing a new Vista SP1 reinstall ?

Yes, Vista SP1 can be removed, EoA uninstalled/re-installed, and SP1 re-installed.
-- a. Reboot, log into Windows with full Administrator privileges, and close all open applications.
-- b. Back up all critical files to removable media or to another hard drive.
-- c. Use either Method 1 or Method 2 in How to uninstall Windows Vista SP1 as a troubleshooting step to uninstall SP1.
-- d. Reboot after uninstallation is complete. Log into Windows with full Administrator privileges, and close all open applications.
-- e. Uninstall/re-install EoA as detailed in suggestion 7, above.
-- f. Reboot, log into Windows with full Administrator privileges, and close all open applications.
-- g. Re-install SP1 using Windows Update (Start > All Programs > Windows Update > Check for updates), NOT the stand-alone installation download from the Download Center.
----- 1. If you get an error when using Windows Update to re-install SP1, see Windows Vista Service Pack 1 is not available for installation from Windows Update and is not offered by Automatic Updates.

Unfortunately, I think my computer manufacturer used an installation of Vista that was slipstreamed with SP1. (I think most computer manufacturers will do that from now on.)
I can't go back to an earlier restore point without SP1 nor uninstall SP1 from the configuration panel.

Since it's obvious that something in SP1 blocks Myst V from functioning correctly, is it known what exactly is causing the problem? I presume that a lot of people who will buy a new pc from now on will have SP1 pre-installed on it, and it would be a shame indeed if such a good game as Myst V won't work on those computers.

Thank you for all your help so far.

If you did not find Service Pack for Microsoft Windows (KB936330) under View installed updates (Method 1 in How to uninstall Windows Vista SP1 as a troubleshooting step), do the following:

-- a. Reboot, log into Windows with full Administrator privileges, and close all open applications.
-- b. Back up all critical files to removable media or to another hard drive.
-- c. Confirm that you have Vista SP1 installed.
----- 1. Click on Start, right-click on Computer, and then click on Properties.
----- 2. If Vista SP1 is installed, you'll see that indicated at the bottom of the Windows Edition section.

-- d. Go to your PC manufacturer's website and download/install the latest software and driver updates.
----- 1. Reboot after installing the updates. Log into Windows with full Administrator privileges, and close all open applications.
-- e. Run Windows Update, and install any optional driver updates.
----- 1. Click on Start > All Programs > Windows Update.
----- 2. Click on Check for updates in the upper-left pane, and wait for the update scan to complete.
----- 3. If updates are found, click on View available updates.
----- 4. Review the optional updates, and select those that install device drivers.
----- 5. Reboot when driver installation is complete. Log into Windows with full Administrator privileges, and close all open applications.

-- f. Download the stand-alone SP1 installation package.
----- 1. Windows Vista Service Pack 1 All Language Standalone (KB936330), which should include Dutch.
----- 2. Windows Vista Service Pack 1 Five Language Standalone (KB936330), which includes only English, French, German, Japanese, and Spanish.)
-- g. To save the package to your hard drive, click on Save or Save this program to disk in the File Download dialog box.

-- h. Install the package.
----- 1. Open Windows Explorer, browse to where you saved the downloaded file, and double-click on it.
----- 2. The required installation files will now be extracted. This may take several minutes, so be patient. Do NOT do anything until the Setup Wizard appears!
----- 3. Follow the Setup Wizard's instructions. Accept the install defaults whenever possible.
----- 4. There are two installation phases. After the first installation phase is complete, your PC will automatically reboot. During the second installation phase, you will be prevented from logging into Windows, and your PC will automatically reboot several times.
----- 5. When installation is complete, you will see the Windows login screen.

-- i. Log into Windows with full Administrator privileges, and close all open applications.
-- j. Uninstall SP1 using Method 1 in How to uninstall Windows Vista SP1 as a troubleshooting step.
-- k. Reboot when SP1 removal is complete. Log into Windows with full Administrator privileges, and close all open applications.

-- l. Uninstall EoA and re-install from a clean boot, as detailed above.
-- m. Reboot, log into Windows with full Administrator privileges, and close all open applications.

-- n. Re-install SP1 using Windows Update (Start > All Programs > Windows Update > Check for updates). Do NOT use the stand-alone SP1 installation package!
----- 1. If you get an error when using Windows Update to re-install SP1, see Windows Vista Service Pack 1 is not available for installation from Windows Update and is not offered by Automatic Updates.

Rats! I suspected that the SP1 installer would not allow a re-install over an existing installation. And I don't know of any simple way to force it to do so.

Assuming Vista is installed on your C: drive, search C: for 936330, which is the SP1 installation package key number. If you find a folder with that number in its name, the folder may have an \spuninst subfolder containing an spuninst.exe (uninstaller) file. Double-click on spuninst.exe to run it and uninstall SP1.

There's a command-line method for uninstalling SP1. However, use it at your own risk!
-- a. If Windows6.0-KB936330.exe is not in the C:\temp folder, copy the file to C:\temp.
----- 1. If you did not find Windows6.0-KB936330.exe during the above search, this procedure can NOT be used.
-- b. Open a Command Prompt window.
----- 1. Click on Start, type command in the StartSearch box.
----- 2. Right-click on CommandPrompt, and then click on Run as administrator.
-- d. Type C:\temp\Windows6.0-KB936330-X86.exe /x:C:\temp then press Enter to execute.
-- e. Type md sandbox then press Enter to execute.
-- f. Remove SP1.
----- 1. Type start /w pkgmgr.exe /m:c:\temp\Windows6.0-KB936330-X86.cab /up /s: sandbox
----- 2. Press Enter to execute.
----- 3. SP1 removal may require as much as 15 minutes to complete, so do not do anything until you see on-screen instructions.

If none of the above are successful, the conclusion is that you can not easily uninstall SP1, most probably because it was part of an integrated/slipstreamed Vista installation.

There are undoubtedly Registry keys that the SP1 installer uses to determine whether the service pack is already installed. If those keys could be found and appropriately modified, SP1 could be installed, then uninstalled, etc., etc.

However, I believe that your only remaining (practical) options are reformatting your hard drive and installing Vista without SP1, or installing the game on another PC running Win XP or Vista without SP1.

I fixed it! I'm so happy right now!

I know that Myst V could work on SP1, just not if you installed it on SP1. However, nothing went wrong with the installation of the game. Something went wrong with the initialisation of the game. I think the game couldn't properly detect my hardware settings or something like that.

Eventually I came to the solution:

I installed the game on Windows XP, and I copied everything from the folder C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Local Settings\Application Data\Myst V End of Ages

to this folder on Vista:
C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Myst V End of Ages

After that I could launch the game without any problems. I didn't even need compatibility mode.

Perhaps this information could be stickied somewhere, as I'm sure it could help others too.

Thanks, Heimdall, for all your help. Smile

Good job Erik. Clap

The feeling must be mighty good. Party Hat

P.S.
To play Myst 5 from my external hard disk, I did something similar because if installed directly on the external hard disk, there was much delays.

My solution:
1- Installation in my main " C " drive (Windows XP)

2- Copied to my external HD drive plus a link to the desktop (from the HD drive). And no delays.

3- Deleted Myst 5 on main "C" drive.

Thank you Erik.am.
Your solution for fixing stack error worked for me. I purchased a new laptop with Vista/SP1 installed. Copied the files of of my XP desktop as you explained. Problem solved.
Thanks again. Pete

I'm going through the process of transferring the XP files to my vista machine. Do I still need to have the Myst "installed" on the Vista machine?

Yes, install Myst V from the dvd-disc, and after that, copy your settings from Windows XP to Vista as I described above.

Good luck. Smile

How frustrating this is! I've been trying everything for so long - I thought you had the fix for me to finish playing this game. This is the stack error I get:
Exception type: Access violation
Call stack (14 levels):
0x760E4911
0x0066B9D9
0x0044A9A8
0x011243F1
0x0044121D
0x0051C6D3
0x0051BE4E
0x72687652
0x72688D41
0x726847BF
0x7268B793
0x6EF489FD
0x6EF488F1
0x7268B187
<end>

I don't have exactly the same place to copy the game to on Vista - I don't have an application folder in my username - so I copied it into my "username" folder. Any other thoughts?

Try using Windows Explorer to create the subfolder(s) under C:\Users that you don't have, to get to the required folder tree - C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Myst V End of Ages.

For example, if you already have C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local:
-- a. Log into Vista with full Administrator privileges, and close all open applications.
----- 1. Do NOT boot up with the EoA DVD or CD #1 (or any disc) in any drive.
-- b. Open a Windows Explorer session.
-- c. Browse to C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local, and click on the \Local subfolder to highlight it.
-- d. On the Windows Explorer top task bar, click on File > New > Folder.
-- e. Type Myst V End of Ages in the box to over-write "New Folder".
----- 1. Check to be certain that you typed correctly, including the required spaces.
-- f. Press Enter to create the subfolder.

You now have C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Myst V End of Ages.

Next:
-- a. Move the required EoA files to the new \Myst V End of Ages subfolder.
----- 1. These should be the files you copied to your "username" folder, from Win XP's C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Local Settings\Application Data\Myst V End of Ages.
-- b. Insert your EoA DVD or CD #1 into the drive, and allow it to spin up to speed.
----- 1. If it autostarts, cancel back to the Desktop.
-- c. Start EoA using the game's Desktop icon, NOT the menu item on the disc.

One more time here! Smile I found your instructions very helpful - and was able to relocate the files from XP to the right folder in Vista. Now when I start the game from the Icon it does start the game but locks up as soon as I hit new player. Any further help?

Thank you!

Now that you're able to get into the game, go to the options menu and set everything. Your settings may be different on your Vista machine, so perhaps it didn't work because you still used your XP settings. See if that works.

Suggestions, to be done in the order shown. Print out the suggestions, so that you can check off each step as you complete it and thus prevent forgetting a step.

1. In general,
-- Always log into Vista with full Administrator privileges, and close all open applications before starting EoA.
-- Never boot up with the EoA CD or DVD in the drive, or with a disc in any drive if you have more than one drive.
-- If the EoA CD or DVD autostarts when inserted into the drive, cancel back to the Desktop.
-- Always start EoA with the Desktop icon, not with the CD or DVD menu item.

2. If you haven't done so in the past couple of days, run Windows Update (Windows Explorer > Tools > Windows Update), and install at least the Critical Updates.

3. If you don't already have it, install Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1). If it isn't one of the Update options, see Information about Windows Vista Service Pack 1 and Quick start: Service Pack 1.

4. Update your video driver to the latest Vista version from your PC manufacturer or from your motherboard manufacturer, or from NVIDIA or from AMD/ATI.

5. Update your sound driver to the latest Vista version from your PC manufacturer or from your motherboard manufacturer.

6. If your motherboard has an NVIDIA nForce chipset, update its drivers to the latest from your PC manufacturer or from your motherboard manufacturer, or from NVIDIA. The NVIDIA drivers are available starting here. Click on nForce for Product Type:, then click on your Product Series:, Product:, and Operating System:.

7. If you're overclocking, set *everything* back to OEM specifications. Reboot, and start EoA.

8. Try running EoA in Compatibility Mode. See How to start the Program Compatibility Wizard in Windows Vista for details.

9. Take a look at Myst V: Main Branch and Access Violation/Stack Error Fixes With Win XP, under Access Violation/Stack Error, sections 2 and 3. Since these sections are written specifically for Win XP, you'll need to modify the folder paths as necessary for Vista.

10. Some programs run properly on Vista only if you run them with full Administrator privileges and with the Run as administrator option enabled. See How to use User Account Control (UAC) in Windows Vista.

11. Try what's called out in:
-- a. How to troubleshoot program compatibility issues in Windows Vista
-- b. How to troubleshoot issues that may prevent a program from being installed correctly on a Windows Vista-based computer
-- c. Advanced methods to troubleshoot a program that does not run as expected after it is installed on Windows Vista

12. Re-install EoA from a clean boot. If you originally installed EoA to a drive other than C:, re-install it to your C: drive.
-- a. Uninstall EoA using the Control Panel Programs utility.
----- 1. Click on Start > Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features.
----- 2. Click on the "Myst V End of Ages" entry, then click on Uninstall. Follow the Wizard's prompts.
----- 3. When the uninstall is complete, close back to the Desktop.
-- b. Use Windows Explorer to find vpd.properties. It's probably in your \Windows folder.
----- 1. Rename the file to something like OLD_vpd.properties. If you don't rename it, the EoA install Wizard will tell you that the game is already installed.
Use the install defaults whenever possible.
-- e. Do step 7 in How to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot in Windows Vista.
-- f. Insert the EoA CD or DVD into the drive, and allow it to spin up to speed.
----- 1. If the CD or DVD autostarts, cancel back to the Desktop.
-- g. Start EoA by clicking on the Desktop icon (NOT the "Play" option on the CD or DVD).
-- h. If EoA still doesn't play properly, run the game in Compatibility Mode and with the Run as administrator option enabled.
