I have ordered a Firewire / USB 2.0 external drive enclosure for my old DVD-ROM drive that I had laying around. I'll let you know whether it works or not.

Tech support responded to my inquiry, and apparently an external drive should work with Myst V. Below are my original question and their response.
QUESTION - 09/26/2005 05:44 PM I have an old DVD-ROM drive that I could put into an external drive enclosure and run over Firewire or USB 2.0. Could you please tell me whether or not an external DVD-ROM drive might work with Myst V End of Ages? ANSWER: The protection system should work fine with external drives, so that will not be a problem. Depending on how old the drive is, you may need to update the firmware for it before the game will operate properly. Please contact the drive manufacturer for more information. |

It does work. I put my old Samsung SD-616 DVD-ROM drive into an external Firewire / USB enclosure and it works fast and well, at least so far.
