Hello all. All right...I have a problem I cannot fix, and I am about at my limit of frustration. I have spent HOURS trying to fix this problem. (I started at 8 PM. it is now 2 AM.) I have looked at every thread in this area and tried EVERY single thing suggested for problems even remotely similar, and not a one has worked. If anyone can help I would immesiely appreciate it.

My problem is that once I get past the letter in the beginning...the video sucks. I get lines and blocks appearing everywhere. The whole thing also freezes about every minute or so for a few seconds before going on. I don't know what that is, but there's nothing on this forum that helps. Needless to say, this completely destroys the main reason I play the MYST games, and it's impossible to enjoy. Please help. (The sound's fine, oddly enough!)

I have an nvidia GEFOrce MX/MX 400 monitor (tried every single driver that was suggested), an AMD Athlon 2.1 Ghz and 448 MB of RAM. not QUITE the recommended, but far more than the required. Windows XP Service Pack 1 if that means anything. It's an HP computer.

If you need any more information, please tell me what you need and how I get it. Thank you very much.

Al

You mentioned that you have a GeForce MX video card. Is it just a GeForce MX card, or does it have a number after it (like GeForce 2, 3, 4, FX)? Also, how many megabytes of video ram does it have (this information should be available by going to Start->Run, typing "dxdiag", and looking a the "Total Memory" readout on the Display tab)?

The game requires at least 32 MB of video RAM on your video card, as well as at least a GeForce 256 to run correctly. If you are having difficulties with the graphics, I would suggest first attempting to turn down your graphics settings in-game. Run at 800x600 with anti-aliasing and anisotropic filtering off, set texture and video quality levels to their midrange setting or lower, and disable shadows and dynamic reflections. If all of these suggestions don't get you anywhere and you do have a video card capable of running the game, please save a copy of your dxdiag report (instructions are in one of the pinned topics in this forum) and paste it into this thread for Heimdall to take a look at (I don't dabble much into the inner workings of Windows systems, so unfortunately this is the extent of the help I can offer you).

I should also note, for your own future reference, that MX models of nVIDIA brand video cards are low-end versions which are less capable than an equally numbered graphics card without an MX in the model name. If you find that your video card is insufficient to play the game and are considering an upgrade, I would suggest, for future playability, that you avoid an MX card. It'll cost you a little more up front, but it's quality and power that will extend the length of your card's life.

hyenacubcub,

Sounds like you have a GeForce2 MX/MX 400 video chipset. If that's so and to confirm, did you try installing NVIDIA's ForceWare version 45.23 and 52.16 video drivers? You should have installed exactly as detailed in Myst V: Installing Video Drivers With Win XP, one of the stickied topics at the top of this Forum.

And if you haven't already done so:

1. Set these line items in your system BIOS (if the BIOS has them) as follows:
-- a. Assign IRQ to VGA - Enabled
-- b. VGA palette snooping - Disabled
-- c. PCI Latency Timer - 128
-- d. Video BIOS Shadowing - Disabled
-- e. Video RAM Shadowing - Disabled
-- f. USWC Options - Disabled
-- g. PnP O/S Installed - Enabled
-- h. Video BIOS Cacheable - Disabled
-- i. Video RAM Cacheable - Disabled
-- j. AGP Graphics Aperture - 256 MB (or the next lowest available if 256 MB isn't an option)

2. Adjust EoA's video settings for your GeForce2 MX/MX 400:
-- a. Right-click on a blank area of the Desktop, then:
----- 1. Click on Properties in the resulting drop-down menu.
----- 2. Click on Settings > Advanced > <NVIDIA card name>.
----- 3. You should now be looking at the NVIDIA management menu. Click on Performance & Quality Settings and under Global driver settings, View: the Advanced settings.
----- 4. Mostly, you want to set Application controlled as the defaults, and initially more things 'off' than 'on'. In particular turn off Vertical Sync if it's initially set to Application-controlled, and minimize or turn off Antialiasing and Anisotropic Filtering.
----- 5. If you change any settings, don't forget to click on Apply. Then click on OK > OK to exit to the Desktop.
-- b. Adjust EoA's video settings.
----- 1. Start EoA and click on OPTIONS and then on VIDEO options, if that's not what you're looking at.
----- 2. Click on Reset to Defaults, and write down where all of the sliders are positioned and which boxes are checked/unchecked.
----- 3. Set Video Resolution at 800x600, and uncheck the Recommended Only, Shadows, and Dynamic Reflections boxes.
----- 4. Set the Video Quality, Texture Quality, Antialiasing, and Anisotropic Filtering sliders all the way to the left (minimum settings).
----- 5. Click on Ok, then quit and restart the game.
----- 6. You may like the video with these settings, but if not, go back to the VIDEO options menu.
----- 7. Move the Video Quality slider to halfway between the left-most and middle tick marks.
----- 8. Click on Ok, then quit and restart the game.
----- 9. If you still don't like the video, go back to the VIDEO options menu.
---- 10. Move the Texture Quality slider to halfway between the left-most and middle tick marks.
---- 11. Click on Ok, then quit and restart the game.
---- 12. Repeat this procedure until Video Quality and Texture Quality are back to their default settings. If you get something flaky while you're doing this, go back to the previous setting of whatever you changed last.
---- 13. When you've got Video Quality and Texture Quality back to their default settings, use the same procedure to reset the Antialiasing and Anisotropic Filtering sliders.
---- 14. Finally, recheck the Shadows and Dynamic Reflections boxes, in that order, and quitting/restarting in between changes.

If the above don't help, post a DxDiag report in this thread, so that we can take a look at your system and maybe make recommendations. See Myst V: System Requirements and Posting Guidelines under POSTING GUIDELINES, To post a DxDiag report for a how-to. Run all of the graphics and sound tests you can before saving the report to a file, and post *all* of the file. If the report doesn't show your PC's exact model number, also include that information.

Heimdall

First of all, thank you both very much for replying, and so quickly. I have done all the diag tests. (Yes, it is a GeForce2 MX/MX 400, I thought I’d gotten the “2” in there, I must have missed that) I am doing the diag thing now (thanks for pointing out wher it was, I read the posting guidelines to figure out what I was and was not allowed to do, but missed the instructions somehow.)

Alahmnat I do have a 32 MB card, but if the MX isn’t very good...guess I have to wait until I can afford a better one. :sigh: Computers are a huge pain! Thanks for the info on the MXs. And yeah, I did try all that, put all the qualities down low and all. Would this also account for the thing freezing briefly every few moments?

Heimdall - I did try the older drivers. The 50-something driver had a fit with my windows, but the 45 one seemed to install all right, and it didn’t help anything. It seems there’s something obvious wrong. I am now trying all the stuff you’ve suggested to see if that works.

Okay. not only did it not help (I couldn't get to any of those BIOS settings, to i didn;t mess with anything there), but now I can't even RUN Myst 5. And my colors are completely screwed up, I somehow got all the way down to 4 bits and now I can't get back to reset them and I don't know what I did wrong. I'd like to get my colors back to what they were...

Anyway here was the diag report. i probably just don't have enough of a good video card. I don't get it though, my computer runs URU just fine.

Hello there. Can you please try driver version 56.72 from the archives on the nvidia website? You can search for it. There is also a sticky (fixed thread) on how to install it. [Important to turn anti-virus off when you install, then back on afterwards for example].

I've tried that one, it went ape with my Windows. I can;t use that one, period, it won;t work at all. I just need to get my colors back to nbormal, they're all messed up now, I did something wrong.

Okay never mind on the restoring colors, I finally got them back, had to put the new videodrivers in again. I guess if none of this works, it just means I have a lousy video card. : P

Thanks for all the help. If anyone happens to think of something I've not tried that would be cool. Otherwise I think it's a lost cause ; /

Also, if you have an AGP Fast Write option in your system BIOS, disable it. Enabling this setting if your system doesn't properly support it can cause problems, especially with games.

Have you tried turning of write combining (video card settings, advanced, troubleshooting). I remember an HP computer (although it was a laptop with an ATI card) having difficulties with write combining.
