Hey all,

I tried installing the game on my laptop on Windows Vista, and got a stack error. I tried uninstalling and re-installing. However, I did not realize that there was some kind of magic trick that you have to do to get the game off.
Anyhow, my problem is this: after the re-install, I went to get the game off the computer again and ran into a big problem: THERE IS NO UNINSTALL FILE!! So now, I just have dead weight on my computer and am in need of a Myst V uninstall file. If someone could sendspace it on here, that would be awesome. Thanks for the help!

Welcome to the Forums!

Using somebody else's uninstall file (or files, could be more than one) isn't really a good idea. Their install may well not be the same as yours, and using their file(s) could result in something bad happening to your system. And you don't need any more of that with Vista!

There are four primary ways to uninstall EoA. Reboot, log into Vista with full Administrator privileges, and close all open applications. Then:

1. In the Start Menu Programs List, go to Ubisoft > CyanWorlds > Myst V, and double-click on the Uninstall Myst V icon.

2. Use the Control Panel Programs Utility.
-- a. Click on Start > Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features.
-- b. Click on the "Myst V End of Ages" entry, then click on Uninstall.

If that doesn't work and if you see Change or Repair in addition to Uninstall for Myst V, click on those options and follow the Wizard's instructions. Then try uninstalling again.

3. Run EoA's Uninstaller.exe. Assuming you did a default install:
-- a. Click on Start > Run
-- b. Browse to C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\Cyan Worlds\Myst V End Of Ages\_uninst.
-- c. Double-click on Uninstaller.exe to put it in the Open: box.
-- d. Click on OK to run it.

4. Use a third-party uninstaller. Examples (some free, some not) are:
-- Revo Uninstaller
-- Smarty Uninstaller Pro 2008
-- Mcafee UnInstaller
-- Your Uninstaller! 2008
-- Brute Force Uninstaller
-- Free Uninstaller

You can also:
-- Try the first three ways with Vista running in Safe Mode. To enter Safe Mode, press the F8 key multiple times during bootup. For more information, search Help for "safe mode".
-- Use System Restore to return your system files to an earlier date before you re-installed the game, then try uninstalling. For more information, search Help for "system restore".

Yo Heimdall,

Thanks for the suggestions. However, must tell you that due to the absence of an uninstall file (despite a regular install), the following solutions did not work: solution 1, solution 2, solution 3, and solution 4. Either errors were produced, or these solutions depend on the presence of an uninstall file (believe me, I looked. I wouldn't post this if I hadn't taken the time to look).

Anyway, I undertook a system restore to a point before I had done the whole uninstall/reinstall bit. I've tried to run the uninstall file, but keep getting this error:

"A suitable JVM file could not be found. Please select a JVM by selecting its java.exe file."

So, any new advice on this one? Thanks for the help!

If none of the third-party uninstallers was successful, your best bet is using "brute force" to uninstall EoA. This method involves editing your Registry using Regedit - be very certain to follow these instructions *exactly*!

1. Assuming you did a default install:
-- a. Open Windows Explorer and browse to C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\Cyan Worlds\Myst V End Of Ages.
-- b. Delete the \Myst V End Of Ages folder.
----- 1. If you have any other \Ubisoft or \Cyan Worlds games installed, be careful to delete only the \Myst V End Of Ages folder!
-- c. Search for vpd.properties. It'll probably be in your \Windows folder.
----- 1. If you're positive that no other program uses this file, delete it.
----- 2. If you're NOT positive, rename the file to something like OLD_vpd.properties.
-- d. Browse to the C:\Users folder.
----- 1. Find and delete all references to Myst V.
-- e. Close Windows Explorer.
-- f. Start RegEdit.
----- 1. Click on Start > Run.
----- 2. Type regedit in the Open: box.
----- 3. Click on OK.
-- g. Back up your Registry. If you need to restore the Registry, find the backup file and double-click on it.
----- 1. On the top task bar, click on File > Export.
----- 2. Choose a location and enter a name for the backup file.
----- 3. Click on Save and wait for the process to complete (cursor re-appears).
-- h. In the left-hand pane, click on My Computer to highlight it.
-- i. On the top task bar, click on Edit > Find.
-- j. Type Myst V in the Find what: box.
-- k. Click on Find Next.
-- l. Delete the Myst V entry.
----- 1. Click on the entry to highlight it.
----- 2. Press the Del key or click on Edit > Delete.
-- m. Press F3 to find the next Myst V entry, and delete it.
-- n. Repeat until no further entries are found.
-- o. When you see Finished searching through the registry., click on OK.
-- p. Close Regedit back to the Desktop.
-- q. Reboot.

2. Log into Windows with full Administrator privileges, close all open applications, and check your Registry for errors. This should also pick up stray Myst V entries. Windows doesn't have a built-in Registry diagnosis and repair utility, so here are some other options. Run whichever utility you use until no more repairable errors are discovered, and reboot when finished. (Note that if you've never cleaned up your Registry, you'll probably find *LOTS* of errors!)
-- Symantec's Norton SystemWorks - not free
-- Rose City Software's Registry First Aid - not free
-- VCOM's Fix-It Utilities SystemRegistry-RegistryFixer utility - not free
-- Wise Registry Cleaner - free version
