Hello,
I guess I've followed many others' path, since I am trying to make MYST V work on VISTA, on which I recently installed SP2.

I also tried basically everything i could read in this forum: I had the access viuolation, and fixed with the InitFiles patch, now I am stucked after I click on "Play", i.e. I get the black sccreen and the "Main Branch Error"; I tried the clean install, the compatibility modes, I don't find the KB917422 on my system (must be embedded in some SP?)...

Any help is appreciated; I know my chipset isn't the matching one, so maybe it could be that? But it does not seem so (btw, I also played MYST IV recently on this machine).

Yes I did, please see above my first post, I basically went through all the helps I managed to find on this forum before posting. I have copied the db and ini files where appropriate - and that solved the stack error.
I am currently able to start the game but unable to play.

Just for the records, have you tried playing it in Windows XP compatibility mode with full administrative priviledges ?

assuming we are talking about "eoa.exe", yes I did. I did try XP service pack 2 (which is the only XP option I have here), and I also tried Windows 2000.
I also checked the "Execute this program with administrative privileges" (I have the menu in Italian so forgive me if my translation is not 100% accurate).
Not only, but I also went to the "protection" tab, and gave all users (fearing a conflict with the INI and DB files that were copied into my user AppData folder) full control = read, write, everything.

Hope this helps - I can take screenshots if needed.

In general:
-- a. Start Myst V: End of Ages (EoA) from a fresh boot.
----- 1. Reboot, log into Vista with full Administrator privileges, and close all open applications.
----- 2. Disable all tasks running in the background, especially anti-virus/spyware/adware/pop-up programs, task schedulers, remote system control programs (such as Microsoft NetMeeting) or other programs shown on the Windows task bar.
----- 3. Do NOT run any other programs before starting EoA.
-- b. Do NOT boot up with the EoA disc in the drive, or with any disc in the drive.
-- c. If the EoA disc autostarts when you insert it into the drive, cancel back to the Desktop.
-- d. Start the game using the EoA icon on the Desktop, NOT the menu item on the disc.

Please understand that the problem fixes in the sticky topics at the top of this Forum are primarily for Windows XP, not Vista. Many of the fixes in those topics will also work for Vista, since in many areas Vista is simply Win XP with a new user interface, but some will not. For example, you will not find KB917422 on your system because that security update is not intended for Vista and will not install on a PC running Vista.

Maybe the reason you got "it won't work" from Ubisoft Italy is because of your Mobile Intel 965 Express video chipset. I'm not positive, but EoA may not support this chipset! And even if their video chipsets *are supported* by EoA, laptops often have problems with the Myst series of games. Note that Intel's Mobile Intel 965 Express Chipset Family Game playability on Microsoft Windows Vista does not list EoA, and an Intel site search does not yield results for any of the Myst series.


Try *ALL* of the following.

1. Be certain to apply everything appropriate to your situation from:
-- How to troubleshoot application compatibility issues in Windows Vista
-- How to troubleshoot issues that may prevent a program from being installed correctly on a Windows Vista-based computer
-- Advanced methods to troubleshoot a program that does not run as expected after it is installed on Windows Vista

2. Install the latest version of DirectX 10. Use the DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer. Reboot when installation is complete.

3. After updating DirectX 10, install the latest video driver for your Mobile Intel 965 Express video chipset.
-- a. From Acer, contained in VGA_Intel_7.14.10.1409_Vistax86.zip, available starting here.
-- b. If the Acer driver doesn't do anything, try the Intel driver.
----- 1. Use the Intel Driver Update Utility.
----- 2. Or download version 15.12.4.1666 directly, from here.
----- 3. Go to the Vista Read Me file for installation instructions!

Reboot when driver installation is complete.

4. Reduce your Desktop screen resolution to 640x480 and color depth to High Color (16 bit), then start EoA.
-- a. Click on Start.
-- b. Click on Control Panel.
-- c. Click on Appearance and Personalization, and then on Personalization.
----- 1. Or click on Classic View, and then double-click on Personalization.
-- d. Click on Display Settings.
-- e. Click on Advanced Settings.
-- f. Click on the Intel Graphics Media Accelerator Driver tab.
-- g. Click on the Graphics Properties button.
-- h. When you're done changing settings, click on Apply, and close back to the Desktop.
-- i. Reboot, and start EoA.

5. See Intel's Graphics - OpenGL Settings Guide, and try various combinations of settings. When you're done changing settings, always click on Apply.


If none of the above help, it is very likely that you WILL NOT be able to play EoA on your laptop.

thanks -- I upgraded the DirectX and the chipset drivers and the game now works. I only tried to start it after both updates were done, so my bet is that upgrading the chipset really did the trick.

Of course performance is not top-notch, but at least I can play the game now.

P.S.: re:UBISOFT Italy, I don't want to start a controversy, but I got that reply since when I first contacted them because of the "Access violation" error, which we know can be easily bypassed by installing the .ini and .db files where appropriate. Anyway, it's an old story now!
