I have already registered my Myst V game, but at boot up the "Open with" window pops up asking which program I want to use to open Registration for Myst V.
I've tried the 3 solutions suggested to other users i.e. --a)run RegistrationReminder.exe and clicked NEVER REGISTER, then OK. and also --b)renamed this file OLD_RegistrationReminder.exe.
Finally, in trying the remaining Solution --c)using the System Config Utility, when I un-check the Myst V Registration entry and click on Apply I get the Message "AN ACCESS DENIED ERROR WAS RETURNED WHILE ATTEMPTING TO CHANGE A SERVICE. YOU MAY NEED TO LOG ON USING AN ADMINISTRATOR ACCOUNT TO MAKE THE SPECIFIED CHANGES".
I am already logged in as the only user and Administrator. Are any other solutions available?
Thanks

Welcome to the Forums!

Just to be certain we're on the same page and assuming that you're running Win XP, here's what you should have done - in the order shown:
-- a. Log into Windows with full Administrator privileges, and close all open applications.
-- b. Using Windows Explorer, browse to \Program Files\Ubisoft\Cyan Worlds\Myst V End Of Ages\register, and double-click on RegistrationReminder.exe to run it.
-- c. Click on Never register, then on OK.
-- d. Reboot, log into Windows with full Administrator privileges, and close all open applications.

-- e. Rename RegistrationReminder.exe to something like OLD_RegistrationReminder.exe, and close Windows Explorer back to the Desktop.
-- f. Reboot, log into Windows with full Administrator privileges, and close all open applications.

-- g. Use the System Configuration utility to check for and remove a startup listing. (See How to troubleshoot by using the System Configuration utility in Windows XP for details.)
----- 1. Click on Start > Run, and type msconfig.exe in the Open: box.
----- 2. Click on OK to run the program.
----- 3. Click on the Startup tab and look in the list for a Myst V Registration entry.
----- 4. If you find a Myst V Registration entry, un-check the box, click on Apply, and then on OK.
-- h. Reboot.

If that's exactly what you did, please post a DxDiag report in this topic, so that we can take a look at your system. See Myst V: System Requirements and Posting Guidelines under To post a DxDiag report for a how-to.

Suggestions:

1. While it might not affect to your registration problem, you apparently have some DirectX issues that need to be cleaned up. Also, your video driver is really out of date. You should install the latest driver from NVIDIA for your GeForce 6600, ForceWare 93.71, as detailed under Installing NVIDIA Drivers in Myst V: Installing Video Drivers With Win XP. That driver installation procedure includes re-installing the latest end-user runtime release of DirectX 9.0c - don't neglect to do so! And disconnect your VOIP USB phone before starting the installation procedure.

2. Run the System Configuration Utility from Safe Mode.
-- a. Reboot your PC, and press the F8 key multiple times during bootup.
-- b. Select the first Safe Mode option from the resulting menu, and press Enter.
-- c. Click on <your user name> to log in, *not* on Administrator.
-- d. Click on Start > Run, and type msconfig in the Open: box.
-- e. Click on OK to open the System Configuration Utility.
-- f. Click on the Startup tab and look for a "Registration" entry in the Startup Item column.
-- g. Verify that this is the Myst V registration entry, and click on the box to uncheck it.
-- h. Click on Apply > Close > Restart to reboot.

3. Check your Registry for errors. Since Win XP doesn't have a built-in Registry diagnosis and repair utility, I use (and recommend) all of the following.
-- Symantec's Norton SystemWorks WinDoctor.
-- Rose City Software's Registry First Aid.
-- VCOM's Fix-It Utilities 7 SystemRegistry-RegistryFixer utility.
-- Lexun Freeware's Registry cleaner RegScrubXP 3.25.

Run whichever utility you use until no more repairable errors are discovered, and reboot when finished.

4. Check your hard disk for errors. Refer to How to Perform Disk Error Checking in Windows XP. Close all running programs before starting the error check, and tell Windows to automatically fix file system errors. Another option is Norton SystemWorks Disk Doctor.

5. Defragment your hard disk. To speed up the process, reboot, close all open applications, and immediately begin defragging. Refer to How To Analyze and Defragment a Disk in Windows XP and How to Defragment Your Disk Drive Volumes in Windows XP for details. Executive Software's Diskeeper 2007 is another option.

I've successfully installed the latest NVIDIA driver for my GeForce 6600 and reinstalled the latest release of DirectX 9.0c as suggested. I then ran the SCU from Safe Mode in my user name and unchecked the Myst V registration entry. Clicking on Apply still produces "AN ACCESS DENIED ERROR WAS RETURNED WHILE ATTEMPTING TO CHANGE A SERVICE. YOU MAY NEED TO LOG ON USING AN ADMINISTRATOR ACCOUNT TO MAKE THE SPECIFIED CHANGES".
Prior to all this I checked my Registry for errors with Advanced System Optimzer by Systweak Inc and again with RegScrubXP 3.25 from Lexun.
I've also completed a hard disk error check - defrag was done last month.
All of my other Applications and programmes are functioning correctly (inc Myst v) - but still the Startup problem persists.

Questions:

1. Within the past couple of days, have you used your anti-virus software (with the latest database update) to do a complete, in-depth scan of your hard disk? I recommend both McAfee and Norton.

2. Within the past couple of days, have you run complete, in-depth spyware and adware scans (with the latest database updates) of your hard disk? I regularly use and recommend all of:
-- Spybot - Search & Destroy - free version available
-- Ad-aware SE - free version available
-- Spyware Doctor - free scan available
-- PestPatrol - free scan available

3. Do you have McAfee VirusScan version 11 installed?

4. Do you have ZoneAlarm or Zone Alarm Pro installed?

5. Have you disabled Win XP's built-in firewall?

1. I have McAfee VirusScan Version 10 and whilst a complete in-depth scan had not been done for some weeks, I have now completed one with no viruses found.
2. I've not previously carried out any spyware or adware scans and have now run a complete Ad-aware SE scan - this found and removed IEHijacker.richfind and other critical Tracking Cookies.
3. I then installed and registered Spyware doctor - a complete scan found only some low risk cookies which have been removed.
I do not have ZoneAlarm or Zone Alarm Pro installed and I have not disabled Win ZP's built-in firewall.
4. Having now repeated the 3-step solutions, when I uncheck the Myst V Registration entry I still get the same "AN ACCESS DENIED ERROR...etc........................." message. This message now appears if I try to uncheck any of the start-up programmes.

More questions:

1. Do you have SpyCatcher installed?

2. When you installed Win XP, did you designate an Administrator password?

3. Are you required to enter a password when logging into Windows?

Pending those answers, try disabling Win XP's built-in firewall.
-- a. Log into Windows with full Administrator privileges, and close all open applications.
-- b. Close your Internet connection.
-- c. Disable any software firewall other than Win XP's built-in firewall.
-- d. Click on Start > Control Panel, and then double-click on Windows Firewall.
-- e. On the General tab, click on the Off (not recommended) radio button to activate it.
-- f. Click on OK, then close Control Panel back to the Desktop.
-- g. Run the System Configuration Utility and try disabling the Myst V registration entry.
----- 1. If you have more than one Windows log-in choice (like Administrator and <your user name>, for example), try the above while logged in to each choice. Reboot between choices - don't just log off.
-- h. If you don't have another software firewall, re-enable Win XP's built-in firewall, then open your Internet connection.

Firstly - thanks for your efforts and patience in trying to resolve my problem.
Answers:
1. SpyCatcher is not installed
2. No Administrator password has been designated
3. No password is required when logging into Windows - as only one user is designated, the computer starts up with no user log in.

I've tried your latest suggestions but again with no success. I've since created a new user account which starts up without the Registration window (it doesn't appear in the SCU list) but I'm still unable to uncheck other items logged into this new user account. This account now been deleted so I'm back to my usual user account.

However, in checking System Props, Advanced, User Profiles, there is an "Account Unknown" listed in addition to my Administrator and own User accounts. This "Unknown Account" does not appear as a log-in user option on Startup - could this be the source of the problem?

Yes, depending on how your "Account Unknown" was created, it could be at least part of the problem. For example, a trojan infestation could have created that user account for nefarious purposes, like sending spam Emails using your PC as a robot. A symptom of this sort of thing is lots of Internet access when you aren't the accessor.

Take a look at "Account Unknown":
-- a. Click on Start > Control Panel > User Accounts.
-- b. Under ...or pick an account to change, double-click on the "Account Unknown" icon to open the account.
-- c. Click around under the change possibilities to see what you've got.

If that doesn't tell you anything meaningful:
-- a. Click on Start > Control Panel.
-- b. Double-click Administrative Tools, and then double-click on Computer Management.
-- c. Double-click on Local Users and Groups, and then double-click on Users.
----- 1. Do you see any user accounts other than "Account Unknown" that you don't recognize? If so, double-click on the entry(s) to open it/them.
----- 2. If Guest, HelpAssistant, and SUPPORT_<hex hash> do not each have an X in a red circle next to them, double-click on the entry and check the Account is disabled box.
-- d. Double-click on "Account Unknown", then click on each tab to see what's there.

Does "Account Unknown" appear to be legitimate?

1. Start > Control Panel > User Accounts only shows my "User Name" Computer Administrator account and Guest Account (which is turned off). The "Account Unknown" does not appear here - it only appears in the User Profiles list.

2. When in Computer Management, Local Users and Groups does not appear in any of the three nodes in the left hand pane even when they are expanded. By comparison, duplicating the procedure on my wife's laptop, it appears under the System Tools node but not on mine. This might suggest that I do not have full Computer Adminstrator rights in my "User Name" account even though it is shown as such.

3. To date, I've not been aware of any increased internet access when I'm not the accessor but I'll monitor this as best possible.

Thanks once again for your patience.

Does "Account Unknown" appear to be legitimate? If not, delete the "Account Unknown" profile.
-- a. Log into Windows with full Administrator privileges and close all open programs.
-- b. Click on Start > Control Panel, then double-click on System.
-- c. Click on the Advanced tab, then under User Profiles, click on Settings.
-- d. Click on Account Unknown under Profiles stored on this computer:, then click on Delete.
-- e. Click on OK and close back to the Desktop.
-- f. Reboot, log into Windows with full Administrator privileges, and close all open programs.
-- g. Go to User Profiles as above to verify that Account Unknown has been deleted.
-- h. Close back to the Desktop.
-- i. Run the System Configuration Utility and try disabling the Myst V registration entry.

Sorry for delay in replying - I've been away for 2 weeks.

I've successfully deleted the "Account Unknown" profile and verified that this has indeed been deleted. Unfortunately I'm still unable to disable the Myst V registration entry in the System Configuration Utility.

There has been no increased internet access when I'm not the accessor and all my other programmes and installations continue to function correctly.

Suggestions:

1. Log into Windows with full Administrator privileges, and close all open applications. Then:
-- a. Click on Start > Run
-- b. Type Control Userpasswords2 in the Open: box, and then press OK.
-- c. Check the Users must enter a user name and password box to use this computer box.
-- d. Double-click on Reset password under "Password for Administrator".
-- e. Type in and confirm a new password, then click on OK.
-- f. Click on Apply > OK to close back to the Desktop.

-- g. Click on Start > Control Panel > User Accounts > Change the way users log on or off.
-- h. Under "Select logon and logoff options", check the Use the Welcome screen box and uncheck the Use Fast User Switching box.
-- i. Click on Apply Options, then close back to the Desktop.

-- j. Click on Start, right-click on My Computer, and then click on Properties in the resulting drop-down menu.
-- k. Click on the Advanced tab, then under "Performance", click on Settings> Data Execution Prevention.
-- l. Make certain that the Turn on DEP for essential Windows programs and services only radio button is active, then click on Apply > OK > OK to close back to the Desktop.

-- m. Reboot, log into Windows with full Administrator privileges, and close all open applications.
-- n. Try using the System Configuration Utility to disable the Myst V registration entry.

2. Pressing Ctrl+Alt+Del before logging in helps to protect against some trojan-type malware.
-- a. Log into Windows with full Administrator privileges, and close all open applications.
-- b. Click on Start > Control Panel > User accounts.
-- c. Click on the Advanced tab.
-- d. In Secure logon, check the Require users to press Ctrl+Alt+Delete box.
-- e. Close back to the Desktop, and reboot.
-- f. Log into Windows with full Administrator privileges, and close all open applications.
-- g. Try using the System Configuration Utility to disable the Myst V registration entry.

3. You may have a rootkit-type of malware infestation that your current anti-malware programs aren't detecting, so download and use Microsoft's RootkitRevealer v1.71. The Download RootkitRevealer (231 KB) button is at the very bottom of the page, which is intentional because you should read *all* of the page before using the program.

Rootkits are nasty sly little buggers!! A rootkit won't appear as a Windows process in Task Manager, and its files won't show up when a program like Windows Explorer displays a file list. A rootkit will also make its Registry keys invisible to Regedit. While some rootkits are innocuous, others do bad things within your system, e.g., undetectably keylogging your passwords and sending them to a crook.

A rootkit may in fact be what's preventing you from properly using the System Configuration Utility.

RootkitRevealer works by querying Windows for a file list, then querying the file system directly without going through Windows. Any differences could be due to rootkits. Depending on how many files you have on your PC, the program may take a while to complete, so don't get impatient. Remove whatever RootkitRevealer finds that you can't verify to be a legitimate Windows process, and reboot. Then try using the System Configuration Utility to disable the Myst V registration entry.

Note that the Microsoft Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool is also available.

Suggestion 1
Steps --a. through to --e. completed but --f. Apply is greyed out after typing in a new password. This is also the case if I try to create a password for my own "User Name" account.
Steps --g. through to --m. completed OK but still unable to disable the Myst V registration entry at step --n.

Suggestion 2
I've logged in using my "User Name" account with full Administrator privileges but Start>Control Panel>User accounts does not show an Advanced tab. However, I have been able to check Require users to press Ctrl+Alt+Delete in Secure logon by using the Control Userpasswords2 route in Suggestion 1.

I'm still unable to disable the Myst V Reg entry using the Sys Config Utility and as previously mentioned, I'm also unable to disable any other programmes in the Start Up list.

Suggestion 3
I've spent much time ensuring I fully understood the rootkit-type of malware infestation before running RootkitRevealer. Fortunately it didn't show any of the nasty little buggers!

I've re-run Ad-Aware and Spyware Doctor; McAfee Security Centre, Windows Defender and Windows Firewall are always active with no adverse reports.

I've tried creating a new user account with full Administrator privilegies and whilst the Myst V Registration box doesn't appear on start up on this account, I'm still unable to disable any other Start Up programmes listed using the Sys Config Utility in this account.

Thanks once again for the time you have spent trying to find a solution.

I'm close to running out of ideas, but here are a couple of additional suggestions:

1. To change your password:
-- a. Log into Windows with full Administrator privileges, and close all open applications.
-- b. Click on Start > Control Panel > User Accounts.
-- c. Click on <your user name>, Computer administrator > Change my password.
-- d. Type in your current password, type in a new password, and type in the new password again to confirm it.
-- e. Click on the Change Password box at the bottom of the page.
-- f. Close User Accounts back to the Desktop, and reboot.
-- g. Log into Windows with full Administrator privileges, and close all open applications.
-- h. Try using the System Configuration Utility to disable the Myst V registration entry.

2. Verify the settings of your various accounts.
-- a. Log into Windows with full Administrator privileges, and close all open applications.
-- b. Click on Start > Run.
-- c. Type Control Userpasswords2 in the Open: box, and then press OK to open User Accounts.
-- d. Click on the Advanced tab, then click on the Advanced box under "Advanced user management".
-- e. Click on the Users folder under "Local Users and Groups (Local)", then double-click on Administrator in the right-hand pane.
-- f. On the General tab, make certain that the User cannot change password and Account is disabled boxes are NOT checked, that the Password never expires box IS checked, and that Account is locked out is grayed out.
-- g. Click on the Member Of tab and make certain that Administrators shows in the "Member of:" list.
-- h. Click on OK.
-- i. Click on the Users folder under "Local Users and Groups (Local)", then double-click on <your user name> in the right-hand pane.
-- j. Make certain that the User cannot change password and Account is disabled boxes are NOT checked, that the Password never expires box IS checked, and that Account is locked out is grayed out.
-- k. Click on the Member Of tab and make certain that Administrators shows in the "Member of:" list.
-- l. Click on OK.
-- m. Click on the Groups folder under "Local Users and Groups (Local)", then double-click on Administrators in the right-hand pane.
-- n. On the General tab, make certain that you see Administrator and <your user name> in the "Members:" box. Unless you know that they're legitimate and want to keep them, remove any other entries.
-- o. Click on OK.
-- p. Double-click on the rest of the entries in the right-hand pane. Except for the following, remove any entries that you can't verify to be legitimate. Click on OK after looking at/editing each entry.
----- 1. Backup Operators, Network Configuration Operators, Power Users, Remote Desktop Users, and Replicator should have nothing in their "Members:" boxes, unless you know you've done something that would generate entries.
----- 2. Guests will have a Guest entry in its "Members:" box if you set up a Guest account.
----- 3. Users should have entries like NT AUTHORITY\Authenticated Users (S-X-X-XX) and NT AUTHORITY\INTERACTIVE (S-X-X-X) in its "Members:" box.
----- 4. HelpServicesGroup should have an entry like SUPPORT_388945a0 in its "Members:" box.
-- q. Close everything back to the Desktop, and reboot if you made any User Accounts changes.
-- r. Log into Windows with full Administrator privileges, and close all open applications.
-- s. Try using the System Configuration Utility to disable the Myst V registration entry.

Suggestion 1 has not provided the solution but it looks as though Suggestion 2 is getting to the root of the problem.

In working through it, when I get to step --e in the Users folder and under "Local Users and Groups (Local)", the right-hand pane shows the message X Local Users Group - This computer is running Windows XP Home Edition. This snapin may not be used with that version of Windows. To manage user accounts for this computer, use the User Accounts tool in the Control Panel.

When I use the User Accounts tool in Control Panel there is no Advanced tab, only the three simple tasks of 1) Change an Account 2) Create a New Account and 3)Change the way users log on or off. The only accounts shown are my "User name" account and the Guest account.
Under Task 1 "Change an Account" there are 6 further options none of which give access to the final stages of your Solution.

Rats! <sigh>

Yeah, I forgot that you're running Win XP Home. What you're seeing is why I've always recommended that folks run Win Win XP Professional instead of Home!

Some final suggestions:

1. Run Regedit to remove the Registry reference to Myst V registration. Back up your Registry before proceeding and/or create a Restore Point. If you don't have experience with Regedit, read through How to back up, edit, and restore the registry in Windows XP and Windows Server 2003. See also How to turn on and turn off System Restore in Windows XP, How to restore the operating system to a previous state in Windows XP, and Use System Restore to Undo Changes if Problems Occur.
-- a. Log into Windows with full Administrator privileges, and close all open applications.
-- b. Click on Start > Run.
-- c. Type regedit in the Open: box, and then click on OK to start Regedit.
-- d. Click on My Computer to highlight it, then click on Edit > Find.
-- e. Type Ubisoft into the Find what: box, then click on Find Next.
-- f. Press F3 (Find Next) until you get to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSConfig\startupfolder\C:^Documents and Settings^<your user name>^Start Menu^Programs^Startup^Registration .LNK. You can also browse directly to this HKEY.
-- g. Verify that <command> contains the string C:\PROGRA~1\Ubisoft\CYANWO~1\MYSTVE~1\register\REGIST~1.EXE -d 802928 -l english -r 7 -g -c us –I.
-- h. If it does, delete C:^Documents and Settings^<your user name>^Start Menu^Programs^Startup^Registration .LNK.
-- i. Close Regedit back to the Desktop.
-- j. Run whichever Registry diagnosis and repair utility you use until no more repairable errors are discovered. Reboot when finished.
-- k. Log into Windows with full Administrator privileges, and close all open applications.
-- l. If the "Open with" window asking which program you want to use to open Registration for Myst V does NOT pop up, you're golden. WOOOOOHOOOOO!!
-- m. If the "Open with" window asking which program you want to use to open Registration for Myst V DOES pop up, try using the System Configuration Utility to disable the Myst V registration entry.

2. If Regedit didn't help and you still can't use the System Configuration Utility to disable the Myst V registration entry, uninstall EoA, then re-install from a clean boot as detailed under Installing and Re-Installing EoA, "6. Clean-boot EoA Re-install, Previous Installation" in Myst V: Clean Boot Install/Re-install With Win XP.

3. If none of the above help, re-install Win XP and SP2 <shudder>, then re-install EoA.
