I was getting the "Can't authenticate the original disk error" so I was working through trying to fix that.

I tried to uninstall the program to do a clean re-install. I went to the 'Add-remove programs' untility because Myst wouldn't give me the option of removing it. I clicked to uninstall it but all it did was remove the program from the list.. it didn't actually uninstall it. Now I'm stuck cause I can't find anywhere where I can unstall the program so I can reinstall it... help please.

ok i managed to fix the installation problem but I'm still getting the original CD error.

I already went through all the steps in the sticky and it's still not working. Any ideas?

The file preventing the uninstall is called vpd.properties in Windows. It's a known bug. You have to find it / delete it manually.

i already fixed the problem about uninstalling and yes it was because of that file... now I'm hung up over the "Can't authenticate original cd" error.

I thought that one had a sticky, but apparently not. Have you tried to identify and upgrade your firmware for your DVD RW? Can you swap out your DVD RW for a DVD ROM?

Have tried install and playing from the dvd drive only ?

Suggestions:

1. Yes, if you haven't already done so, you should update your DVD drive's firmware. HP has two QSI SWB 242 firmware updates, for the QSI SBW 242 Slim 24X Combo and the QSI SWB 242 U Slim 24/24/24X Combo. You'll need to determine which model you have, either by (preferably) looking at the label on the top of the drive, your original Dimension factory invoice, or Device Manager.
-- The QSI SBW 242 Slim 24X Combo firmware update is available here. This is version UD30, released 11/19/03, R69582.EXE, 608 KB.
-- The QSI SBW 242 U Slim 24/24/24X Combo firmware update is available here. This is version UD27, released 10/05/04, R86490.EXE, 686 KB.

Whichever version you install, be very certain to carefully read Additional Information and Important Information, and follow the Installation Instructions. Log into Windows with full Administrator privileges before installing.

2. Reset your virtual memory paging file. Before changing paging file settings, note what you started with, so that you can go back to those settings if desired. Be certain that you're logged into Windows as an Administrator or a member of the Administrators group, then:
-- a. Click Start, right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
-- b. In the System Properties dialog box, click the Advanced tab.
-- c. In the Performance pane, click Settings.
-- d. In the Performance Options dialog box, click the Advanced tab.
-- e. In the Virtual memory pane, click Change.
-- f. Under Drive, click the drive that contains the paging file you want to change.
-- g. Under Paging file size for selected drive, click Custom size.
-- h. Change both Initial size and Maximum size to 2048, the proper value in megabytes.
-- i. Click Set, and then click OK.
-- j. Click OK to close the Performance Options dialog box, and then click OK to close the System Properties dialog box. Close everything back to the Desktop.
-- k. Reboot.

3. In addition to doing a full clean-boot EoA install, did you try installing only the EoA Program Files and Detection Tool, and NOT the Support files?
-- a. Follow the EoA install options to the "Choose the setup type that best suits your needs" page.
-- b. Select Custom install, and click on Next.
-- c. On the resulting 'Select the features for "Myst V End of Ages" you would like to install' menu, uncheck the Support box.
-- d. Re-check the Myst V Detection Tool box at the bottom of the menu.
-- e. Click on Next and finish the installation.
-- f. Even if you get a "Finished" message from the install Wizard, wait for all hard disk activity to stop - then and only then close the Wizard.
-- g. Reboot, and log into Windows with full Administrator privileges.
-- h. Start EoA.

4. Some or all of the following may also be required:
-- a. Install and play only with an original game disk, NOT a burned copy!
-- b. Disable or uninstall all programs intended to allow playing DVD movies from any region. For example, DVD Region Killer. Then start EoA.
-- c. Using Device Manager (right-click on My Computer icon > Properties > Hardware > Device Manager), remove all virtual disks installed by CD/DVD burning or copying programs, like Easy CD/DVD Creator, Nero Burning ROM, CloneCD, et al. Then start EoA.
----- 1. Do NOT reboot after removing the virtual disk(s), before starting EoA.
----- 2. You may need to prevent the burning/copying program from loading on bootup (using Start > Run, Msinfo32 > System Configuration Utility) and installing the virtual disk(s).
----- 3. Worst case, you may need to uninstall the program itself and reboot, then install EoA.
-- d. Using Task Manager (press Ctrl+Alt+Del once, then click on Task Manager), disable all programs that enable drag-and-drop-file-transfer CD/DVD burning, aka packet writing software (for example, Direct CD, InCD, DLA/Sonic DLA, Instant-Write, Packet CD, Drag to Disc, FileCD, abCD). Then start EoA.
----- 1. You may need to prevent the program from loading on bootup, using Start > Run, Msinfo32 > System Configuration Utility.
----- 2. Worst case, you may need to uninstall the program itself and reboot, then install EoA.
-- e. Uninstall PlayBackup, Daemon Tools, and Insektors, then reboot and start EoA.

I still can't get it to work. I did everything you said and actually wound up going to Dell support to get the firmware upgrade as my drive wasn't either of the ones you listed.


Is it possible that there's something wrong with the disk itself?

My sisters computer is in my room here so I'm going to try it on her machine and see what happens.

Have you tried a plain ordinary DVD ROM?

I'd have to go buy a new drive if I wanted to try that. And actually I can't even do that unless it was an external drive give the model of my machine. What I have now is a CD+RW/DVD combo. So it is a DVD-rom... just not by itself.

I tried this on my sister machine last night and it worked. It was really glitchy but it worked. She has a DVD+RW. I'm going to assume at this point that there's nothing wrong with the disks themselves and perhaps my CD drive is just not working right.

I don't know. If you have any other suggestions I'd be glad to try them out. But I think I'm going to wind up calling/talking to Dell again and see what I can do about getting a new drive.

Not true. Any RW drive presents the potential for difficulties, but a lot of RW drives work just fine. The Mac Combo and SuperDrive both run the game fine as far as I'm aware (my SuperDrive has no trouble), and the TDK CD-RW and Lite-On DVD-RW I have in my Windows PC both work fine with all of the titles so far.

I tried to uninstall the program to do a clean re-install. I went to the 'Add-remove programs' untility because Myst wouldn't give me the option of removing it. I clicked to uninstall it but all it did was remove the program from the list.. it didn't actually uninstall it.
