Hello
I've got some serious problems playing Myst V. After several installs, following the instructions on this forum, the same thing occurs: everytime I start a new game, the introduction starts to play, and after a certain time, the whole system crashes. Once I came beyond the introduction and I began playing. When I got to the part where a movie sequence started, the whole system crashed again and again and again. I've updated the video drivers, the drive firmwares, checked for errors and defragmented the hard drives. I can't find any logfiles describing the crash, so I really don't have a clue what could be wrong. Maybe someone can see what's wrong in my dxdiag report. Any help will be very welcome! thanks, Gabriel ------------------ System Information ------------------ Time of this report: 12/29/2005, 00:08:14 Machine name: ZITMAN Operating System: Windows XP Professional (5.1, Build 2600) Service Pack 1 (2600.xpsp1.020828-1920) Language: English (Regional Setting: English) System Manufacturer: ASUSTeK COMPUTER INC. A Xeon-based workstation/server, which is what you've got, is a very powerful machine. Unfortunately, just being powerful does not make it the best thing for gaming. Strange (and unsolvable) problems unique to the workstation architecture can occur with games.
Your DxDiag report indicates two instances of a GeForce 6600 GT video card. If you're running a dual-monitor setup, this may be the problem, since EoA sometimes doesn't like that. Run a single monitor only, and disable dual-monitor capability before starting the game. EoA also doesn't like RAID arrays, which you're running. Unless you de-RAID, you may not be able to play the game. Installing EoA on a USB or Firewire external drive may work if you don't want to de-RAID. That aside, suggestions: 1. Set these line items in your system BIOS (if the BIOS has them) as follows: -- a. Assign IRQ to VGA - Enabled -- b. VGA palette snooping - Disabled -- c. PCI Latency Timer - 128 -- d. Video BIOS Shadowing - Disabled -- e. Video RAM Shadowing - Disabled -- f. Uncacheable Speculative Write Combining (USWC) Options - All disabled -- g. PnP O/S Installed - Enabled -- h. Video BIOS Cacheable - Disabled -- i. Video RAM Cacheable - Disabled -- j. AGP Graphics Aperture - 128 MB (or the next lowest available if 128 MB isn't an option) -- k. AGP Fast Write - Disabled 2. Right-click on a blank area of the Desktop, then: -- a. Click on Properties in the resulting drop-down menu. -- b. Click on Settings > Advanced > NVIDIA card name. -- c. You should now be looking at the NVIDIA management menu. Click on Performance & Quality Settings and under Global driver settings, select Advanced settings (View: box). -- d. Mostly, you want to set Application controlled as the defaults, and initially more things 'off' than 'on', but play around with the settings until you find a combination that satisfies. In particular turn off Vertical Sync if it's initially set to Application-controlled. -- e. If you change any settings, don't forget to click on Apply. Then click on OK > OK to exit to the Desktop. 3. Adjust the game's video settings for your (primary?) GeForce 6600 GT: -- a. Start EoA and click on OPTIONS and then on VIDEO options, if that's not what you're looking at. -- b. Click on Reset to Defaults, and write down where all of the sliders are positioned and which boxes are checked/unchecked. -- c. Set Video Resolution at 800x600, and uncheck the Recommended Only, Shadows, and Dynamic Reflections boxes. -- d. Set the Video Quality, Texture Quality, Antialiasing, and Anisotropic Filtering sliders all the way to the left (minimum settings). -- e. Click on Ok, then quit and restart the game. -- f. You may like the video with these settings, but if not, go back to the VIDEO options menu. -- g. Move the Video Quality slider to halfway between the left-most and middle tick marks. -- h. Click on Ok, then quit and restart the game. -- i. If you still don't like the video, go back to the VIDEO options menu. -- j. Move the Texture Quality slider to halfway between the left-most and middle tick marks. -- j. Click on Ok, then quit and restart the game. -- k. Repeat this procedure until Video Quality and Texture Quality are back to their default settings. If you get something flaky while you're doing this, go back to the previous setting of whatever you changed last. -- l. When you've got Video Quality and Texture Quality back to their default settings, use the same procedure to reset the Antialiasing and Anisotropic Filtering sliders. -- m. Finally, recheck the Shadows and Dynamic Reflections boxes, in that order, and quitting/restarting in between changes. 4. Using Device Manager (right-click on My Computer icon > Properties > Hardware > Device Manager), remove all virtual disks installed by CD/DVD burning or copying programs. For example, Daemon Tools, Alcohol 120%, CloneCD, Easy CD/DVD Creator, Nero Burning ROM, etc. This suggestion may be required together with suggestion 5, below. -- a. Remove the virtual disk(s), then WITHOUT rebooting start EoA. -- b. You may need to prevent the program(s) from loading on bootup, using the System Configuration Utility, before starting EoA. ----- 1. Click on Start > Run. ----- 2. Type msconfig in the Open: box, then click on OK to run the program. ----- 3. Click on the Startup tab. ----- 4. Scroll down to the program you want to prevent from loading on startup, and click on the check box to clear it. ----- 5. Click on Apply, then on OK. ----- 6. Reboot, then start EoA. -- c. Worst case, you may need to uninstall the program itself and reboot, then start EoA. 5.
