Suggestions:

1. Check your system RAM for errors using a utility like Memtest86 (free), available here. Click on 'Download - Pre-Compiled Memtest86 v3.2 installable from Windows and DOS' under 'Memtest86 3.2 Release (11/Nov/2004)'. If Memtest indicates problems, go to your BIOS's Chipset Features Setup page or whatever page the memory variables like latency are on, and load the BIOS defaults. Then try Memtest again. If you still get errors, you've got bad RAM.

2. Install the proper driver for your GeForce FX 5500 as detailed in Myst V: Installing Video Drivers With Win XP, one of the stickied topics at the top of this Forum.

3. Defragment your hard disk(s). Refer to How To Analyze and Defragment a Disk in Windows XP and How to Defragment Your Disk Drive Volumes in Windows XP. Executive Software's Diskeeper 9.0 is another option.

4. Check your hard disk(s) for errors. Refer to How to Perform Disk Error Checking in Windows XP. Another option is Norton SystemWorks 2005's Disk Doctor.

5. Re-install Myst V from a clean boot as detailed in Myst V: Clean Boot Install/Re-install With Win XP.

This sound like the same problem that I am having. It always crashes just after I have picked up the first journal, and camara, and proceed into the large chamber where I see a transparent dome with an animal inside. Thats when the system reboots. I have tried all of the suggested fixes... Virus scans, hard disk defrag, etc. I don't think I want to risk crashing the hard drive anymore.

A 0x0000007F stop error can be due to mismatched RAM modules. Have you by any chance installed a second module?

That aside, further suggestions:

1. If you're somehow overclocking anything, set back to OEM specs.

2. Reset your virtual memory paging file. Before changing your paging file settings, note what you started with, so that you can go back to those settings if desired. Be certain that you're logged on as an Administrator or a member of the Administrators group, then:
-- a. Click Start, right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
-- b. In the System Properties dialog box, click the Advanced tab.
-- c. In the Performance pane, click Settings.
-- d. In the Performance Options dialog box, click the Advanced tab.
-- e. In the Virtual memory pane, click Change.
-- f. Under Drive , click the drive that contains the paging file you want to change.
-- g. Under Paging file size for selected drive, click Custom size.
-- h. Change Initial size and Maximum size to 1024, the proper value in megabytes.
-- i. Click Set, and then click OK.
-- j. Click OK to close the Performance Options dialog box, and then click OK to close the System Properties dialog box. Close everything back to the Desktop.
-- k. Reboot, and play EoA.

3. Applications and processes running in the background can cause problems. Use Windows Task Manager to close everything except for Explorer.exe, Ctfmon.exe, and whatever your hardware needs:
-- a. Close your Internet connection.
-- b. Press Ctrl+Alt+Del once, and then click on Task Manager.
-- c. Click on the Applications tab.
-- d. Click on the desired application to highlight it.
-- e. Click on End Task.
-- f. Repeat this procedure until all unnecessary background applications are closed, including your anti-virus program and software firewall.
-- g. Click on the Processes tab.
-- h. Click on the desired process to highlight it.
-- i. Click on End Process.
-- j. Repeat this procedure until all unnecessary background processes are closed. If you aren't sure which processes can be safely closed, check out the AnswersThatWork Task List Programs index. The most common tasks are described, and which ones are essential and which can be safely closed are noted.
-- k. WITHOUT rebooting, play EoA.

4. Download and install the latest BIOS update from Dell for your Dimension 4100, available here. This is 4100_A11.EXE, version A11, released 6/25/02, 487 KB11 MB. Carefully follow the Installation Instructions at the bottom of the page.

5. Download and install the latest driver/patch from Dell for your Sound Blaster Live!, available here. This is R37379.EXE, version SBLV-DLPAT-1-LA, released 4/5/02, 11 MB. Carefully follow the Installation Instructions at the bottom of the page.

6. Physically remove the Sound Blaster Live! card from your PC. If that solves the crashing problem, you probably have a bad card. Try replacing it with a known-good sound card.
