I seem to have a problem that i can't understand. when i start the game, i start within the pedestal in direbo. after that the only age i can access is noloben. also i don't have any journal or camera. when i try to exit, and click on the 'x', and go to the main menu, i see atrus' monologue and then i'm in atrus's prison. after that i continue normally but next time i start the game, i'm back to square one as i stated above. save games don't appear. help, anyone?

Questions:

1. Did you pick up your Player Journal and the Camera? They're some of the first things you find, on the floor after going through the only functional door of seven and down several flights of stairs.

2. Have you found the stone plate with the three symbols, made it rain, and then found the four bowls?

3. What's your operating system, Win XP or Vista?

Okay i did pick the journal and camera. and i did take pictures from it but no save games appeared.
i did solve the noloben puzzle the one with rain and the dome.
and XP
tell me is the way i start the normal way?

Everytime you take a picture, you should see a new saved picture in the book beside the camera.

As for hints for playing the game, it would be a good idea to start a new topic of your own in the spoiler forum where we will be able to help you.

You should read all of the instruction booklet that is supposed to come with the dvds or cds in the box.

i don't need walk throughs. i just can't understand why thaere's no picture i.e save game in my journal and why can't i continue the game. why i always end up at the same starting place? is this normal?

Just to be certain we're on the same page:
-- a. The Camera is the shiny blue globe in the upper right corner of the screen, third icon from the right.
-- b. If you're in the mode in which the screen view follows mouse movement, right-click to lock the view.
-- c. Move the cursor to the upper right corner of the screen. The line of icons should appear.
-- d. Click on the Camera to save your game progress to date.
-- e. You can go back to the places where you did saves, with all game progress up to that point intact, by clicking on the rust-red book next to the Camera and selecting the desired save.


When you exit the game by clicking on the [X] icon in the upper right corner of the screen and then on Quit, EoA autosaves. When you restart the game by clicking on Continue on the Main Menu, you should start *where you were when you last quit*. So, no, what you're seeing is not normal! You may have a corrupted EoA installation or other problems.


In general,
-- When playing EoA, always log into Windows with full Administrator privileges, not into a Limited User or Power User account.
-- Reboot immediately before playing EoA, close all open applications, and do NOT run any other applications before starting the game. For your situation, also disable all anti-virus, anti-spyware, anti-adware, and any other system protection software EXCEPT for your firewall.
-- Do NOT boot up with the EoA disc in the drive, or with any disc in any drive.
-- When ready to play EoA, insert the disc into the drive and allow it to spin up to speed. Cancel back to the Desktop if it autostarts.
-- Always use the Desktop icon to start EoA, not a disc menu item.


Suggestions:

1. Right-click on the EoA Desktop icon, and click on Properties in the resulting drop-down menu. If you accepted the EoA install defaults, you should see "C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\Cyan Worlds\Myst V End Of Ages\eoa.exe" in the Target: box and "C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\Cyan Worlds\Myst V End Of Ages\" in the Start in: box. If that's not what you see, type in the appropriate correction (including the quotes). Then click on Apply > OK, and click on the icon to start EoA.

2. After installation is complete, you need to have at least 5 GB of free space on the drive to which you've installed EoA. Particularly if EoA is installed to your C: drive, free space is defined as space available on the drive after subtracting the total allocation for the virtual memory paging file. To determine space allocated for the paging file:
-- a. Click Start, right-click on My Computer, and then click on Properties.
-- b. In the System Properties dialog box, click on the Advanced tab.
-- c. In the Performance pane, click on Settings.
-- d. In the Performance Options dialog box, click on the Advanced tab.
-- e. See Total paging file size for all drives:.
-- f. Click on OK > OK to exit.

3. See "7. C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Local Settings\Application Data\Myst V End of Ages\sav contains the subfolders:", under Installing and Re-Installing EoA in Myst V: Clean Boot Install/Re-install With Win XP.
-- a. If you don't find the noted files and folders, or if the folders don't contain any files, re-install EoA from a clean boot. Carefully follow the instructions under Installing and Re-Installing EoA, "6. Clean-boot EoA Re-install, Previous Installation" in Myst V: Clean Boot Install/Re-install With Win XP.
----- 1. Note the comments and instructions involving vpd.properties, especially "8. If you aren't certain whether vpd.properties is used by programs other than EoA:".
-- b. Do a *full* EoA installation.
----- 1. It's best to install EoA to your C: drive, since this tends to eliminate various problems.
-- c. It's a really good idea to carry out all of the sections under Overall Windows and Hard Disk Tune-up before re-installing EoA.


If the above don't help, post a DxDiag report as detailed in Posting Guidelines and Myst V System Requirements, under POSTING GUIDELINES, To post a DxDiag report. We may be able to spot something and make recommendations.
