Ok, I admit, I have no idea what I'm doing. I'm not a gaming genius, and I'm computer savy in a rather average way. But here's my issue, since I didn't see anyone else post it.

I installed the game, the directx9 thinger, and the game started (well, the logos started) and I get to a menu where there's four lovely choices (new, continue, etc) and I can't do anything because there is no mouse icon or arrow key control. I may have missed something obvious to everyone else, so I thought I'd ask for help instead of chucking the disks out the window. (I have restarted my computer at least to try to alleviate the problem. zilch.)

This is my dxdiag (I think) I followed the instructions in the information chat, but like I said, this isn't in my strong skill set.

I'm really sorry if this is just another one of those cases where the silly user doesn't have the right cards or what not (I get mine at Hallmark... that is supposed to be a joke...) But I honestly don't know how to check.

Is your problem that you can't make any input to Myst V with your mouse or TouchPad or keyboard?

Did the game install properly, with no glitches or errors? And does it start properly, with no glitches or errors?

The game gave no indication that anything installed improperly. The animated logos for both ubisoft and cyan play perfectly. Then there's a bar (assuming a loading bar) that does it's little loading thing. The next screen comes up and it's a menu with the menu on the left side of the screen. Although I can use keyboard shortcuts (alt tab) to get out and turn the game off (ctrl alt del), I can't actually do anything within the game. There is no cursor, no reaction at all from any of the letter, number, f1-12, escape or enter keys or from mouse/touchpad attempts. It just sits there looking smug and teasing me with it's silence.

I also reinstalled the game... same problem

Suggestions:

Always log into Windows with full Administrator privileges before installing any driver or DirectX. "Download accelerator" or "download helper" utilities should NOT be used when downloading any driver or DirectX.

1. Install the latest release of DirectX 9.0c, available here, and reboot. Then install the latest video driver package from HP for your IGP 340M/ATI RS200M chipset, available here. This is "ATI Video Driver and Control Panel", sp23136.exe , version 8.003.3-040515a-016016C, released 6/14/04, 23.53MB.

2. Install the latest sound driver from HP for your Conexant AMC Audio chipset, available here. This is "Conexant Audio Driver for Windows XP", sp23455.exe, version 1.00A, released 4/28/03, 591.3KB.

3. Install the latest driver from HP for your Synaptics Touchpad, available here. This is "Synaptics Touchpad Driver", sp29294.exe, version 7.12.7H2, released 2/2/05, 5.35MB.

4. You should also update the driver for your separate mouse.

5. If none of the above help and if you didn't re-install EoA from a clean boot as detailed under "6. Clean-boot EoA Re-install, Previous Installation" in Myst V: Clean Boot Install/Re-install With Win XP, then do so. Be certain to do steps 1 through 5 under Overall Windows and Hard Disk Tune-up before re-installing.
