Starting a new thread after advice on the installation errors thread.
Custom built machine using an ASUS A7N266-VM/LAN motherboard. Yeah, it's an old machine!

Have followed all the advice threads on installing, clean boots, hard drive checks, reg cleans and so forth. Version of Myst V is the PC/MAC DVD Rom version. DVD Drive is a Sony DDU1613 - no new firmware available. Other stuff as per dxdiag.

After removing the existing InstallShield, no new one has been created. I've searched both drives and all it finds is the renamed OLD_installshield. This is not linked in the registry.

Installer gets n% of the way through - worst I've had is 3%, best is 20% - but it then kicks of the sound decompression (which disappears) then a bit later says it is creating the uninstaller and then errors as per headline. It is always after this deinstall message it happens, whatever the % says.

(it then goes on to do the register thingy when I click finish)

Before proceeding, read through Installing and Re-Installing EoA, "1. Preventing Installation Problems - General Comments" in Myst V: Clean Boot Install/Re-install With Win XP. Be certain to do everything appropriate for your system, modified as necessary for Win2k, before installing EoA.

Also, from your earlier post, you've installed the latest version of Java from a clean boot, as detailed in Myst V: Java-related Installation Problem Fixes With Win XP. And you're doing a clean-boot, previous-installation EoA install, modified as necessary for Win2k.

Your Sony DDU1613 is a rebadged LiteOn SOHD-167T, and the latest firmware that'll do anything for it is version 9YS1. Is that what you have installed? If not, go here and double-click on 9YS2. That download also includes the 9YS1 firmware.

With Win2k, you can use the Event Viewer to help with problem definition. Try accessing the Event Viewer to see if there's anything in addition to what you've posted above - application error sources, for example. Refer to How To Diagnose System Problems with Event Viewer in Microsoft Windows 2000.


Suggestions:

1. You may have a disc drive read problem. This could be due to the EoA DVD and/or to the drive itself. First, make certain that the DVD is free of smudges, fingerprints, any sort of haze, etc. Don't just look at the disc and say "yeah, clean". Actually clean it using either water-clear (additive-free, no witch hazel or whatever, no green or blue color) rubbing alcohol or a warm mild detergent solution. Dry with a soft, lint-free cloth using a center-outward motion, NOT circular around the disc. Remove any scratches deep enough to catch a fingernail using one of the repair kits available at CompUSA, Best Buy, Circuit City, from an Internet supplier, et al.

Second, use a DVD laser lens cleaner to clean the laser lenses in your drive. The lenses can build up a haze coating over time which fouls up drive read operation. Particularly if:
-- You live in a dusty area.
-- There's a smoker in the house.
-- You don't have a vent hood over your kitchen stove or cooktop that exhausts outside the house.
-- You use burning-candle or plugin oil-dispersing room deodorizers.

A DVD laser lens cleaner is essentially a disc with tiny brushes on it that take the haze off of the lenses. The best ones for smokers, non-hooders, and candle burners/oilers come with a cleaning solution used to wet the brushes, but this isn't a strict requirement. Run the cleaning cycle at least 3 times in succession, as a first pass.

I use the 3M Scotch Laser Lens Cleaner, but several brands are available. Some are for both CD and DVD drives, some for CD only or DVD only. There are various suppliers, both online and local computer stores. From Amazon, for example:

2. You may not have sufficient hard disk space to install EoA. A complete install requires 4.5 GB of disk space, but at least half that in addition is required temporarily during installation for file decompression, etc. That puts you over the 6 GB free space available on D:.

The only ways to minimize required EoA install space are (a) doing a Custom install as follows, and (b) NOT installing anything from the Making the Game or Sound Track DVD's.
-- a. Follow the EoA install options to the "Choose the setup type that best suits your needs" page.
-- b. Select Custom install, and click on Next.
-- c. On the resulting 'Select the features for "Myst V End of Ages" you would like to install' menu, uncheck the Support box.
-- d. Re-check the Myst V Detection Tool box at the bottom of the menu. The only boxes now checked should be Program Files and Detection Tool.
-- e. Click on Next and finish the installation.
-- f. Even if you get a "Finished" message from the install Wizard, wait for all hard disk activity to stop - then and only then close the Wizard.
-- g. Reboot, and log into Windows with full Administrator privileges.
-- h. Play EoA.

Cleaned DVD, cleaned the dvd-rom.
All made no difference, same error. Although it is now seemingly coming repeatably at 4% and not any higher any more!

(currently have all MS java removed. Files renamed, directories renamed. reg keys deleted.
Sun java 1.6.0 installed and running ok.
Have just tried renaming the installshield dir and then renaming it back. Does seem to cause more disk activity when it isn't renamed, but still keels over at 4%.)

How about the hard-disk space problem?

cleared it so had 6.3Gb free and defragged but no help.

Gonna upgrade my box next month anyway so see if works on that. Thanks for the help though. May be back in a month to let you know if that sorted it!

Noticed a place in town doing a deal on drives - so got myself an extra 132Gb for not a lot.

Guess what? It installed no probs. Playing it this evening. Just goes to show, don't take anything for granted.
