The last few Tom Clancy games have had some of the most unbelievable enemies imaginable. From mercs to mexicans to Private Military Organisations ( OMG ). I know that UBI is being all PC these days but for the love of GOD please install an enemy that we can believe in. Suggestions please? Ubisoft obviousily needs them.
Mine are: Indonesian Separatists trying to rekindle a war between Indonesia and East Timor. Russian/American tensions over oil/gas resources in artic region that are now retreivable due to melting ice caps. Ghosts must go rogue to stop full blown war and tackle black op mercs hired by Oil industry giants from both countries. |

The Russians have been worn out endlessly with the gaming world. "Oh, they're trying to rebuild the Soviet Union!" "Oh no, they live in Siberia so obviously they're evil!"
And the Ghosts go rogue? Why doesn't Rainbow Six sell out as a mercenary clan too, that way all three of the franchises can be on the run from the cops and doing justice as they please. Please... And black op mercs, hired by Chevron and Exxon. That to me is the most unbelievable enemy. |

Wow you ripped my 2nd idea apart, but its probable that oil will be the cause of a major war in the not too distant future. And the last 2 untapped major mineral resource areas of the world lie in the artic and antartic.
And whoever controls these will be the dominant superpower. And im sure governments and big business will use all means to get their share of this treasure chest. |

It's not the who so much as the how as far as I'm concerned. I don't really care who my enemies happen to be, as long as the story is plausible and entertaining. I think this is probably one of the things I notice most in the Tom Clancy series of games because for a franchise based on a writer's work, there's no real story. The writing, the dialogue and the delivery are all rather weak.
I think most enemies featured in games that have at least a tenuous link to realism are plausible in concept, their motives and means are just poorly explained. Take the Vegas series for example - the mercs motives are never fully explained, nor how they managed to pull off an attack in the US involving an army of over 1000 men, their weapons and chemical bombs. All of them brought down with a handful of Rainbow teams. Not to mention the plot elements present are easy to predict. I'm okay with Mexican rebels, South American extremists, Middle Eastern terrorists, Russian militants, whatever. My opinion is that you need to give the player a reasonable insight into why he/she is in the fight. "Thanks for the inspiration to rise above you all." |

Ah, sorry about all that. I had kind of a weird morning so I felt like ranting a bit.
No harm intended, and I'll... unrip that shredded idea thing. Sorry. Anyway, I understood that you weren't really talking about the gas station down the street buying out a ninja clan to take care of the rival gas station up the street, I just thought that sounded funny a little. It's not as unbelievable as I made it out to be. I agree with Longjocks, deeper backgrounds are really needed, and I'm just flat-out tired of Tom Clancy titles focusing the main plot around a pair of missing nuclear warheads. Maybe revolving the story around a MIA or KIA group of American soldiers would work better. |

Clancy didn't have anything to do with GR, not even the story. Matter of fact, RSE had to make him write Rainbow Six.

Thats cool mate. Maybe a story that doesnt involve saving the workld would be better. SOmething more real. |

I thought they did a perfectly good job with laying out and telling the story in relation to each mission in OGR through GRSS.
The story behind the MP portion of GRAW2 - if taken separate from the SP is not too bad, either. ------------------------------- "I just blew your mind, didn't I? The ol' universe isn't the warm, comfy place it was seven seconds ago, is it...?" - Bucky Kat |

I understand that, but still, nuclear warheads are the most overrated, overhyped, and way overused storyline from the 80's up to today. It got old so long ago. And Tom Clancy titles run with the rest of the pack, no matter who wrote them. I'm surprised that Halo's story didn't revolve around missiles... Paladin nailed a good point here. One small group of soldiers saving the world is a bit unrealistic. Why did James Bond movies switch from the old formula to the Casino Royale formula, where he's doing something much smaller and more realistic? Because people were kinda getting tired of the laser watches and the ultra-diabolical plots. He still beats the bad guys and he still gets the girl at the end, just in a more believable fashion. If Ghost Recon toned it down and revolved the plot around something like the corruption of one country in Africa, where a large group of UN peacekeepers and American soldiers are MIA, and the Ghosts are sent in to save them, it would get better reviews no doubt, and it would stay longer on every gamer's list of favorites. |

That would be a better story. People use to play Ghost Recon because it simulated realistic military tactics and environments. Thats why i played it. GRAW and GRAW 2 were too hollywood and aimed at a completely different audience. Personally I'd love to play a Ghost Recon game based on Helmand province or Nepal or Sri Lanka or Zimbabwe or The Congo or India/Pakistan border. Just Please concentrate on realism. I want to believe in the story, the enemy, the troops I control and the setting. Hollywood can take a back step.

How about mass revolts in central asia spilling over into india and china or even russia. Could make for some great scenarios and its pausible that A it could happen and B that a covert US presence would be needed.

You mean civilian revolts?
Not just your every day rebel army, but actual civilians uprising against a sadistic government? If so, would we be stopping the revolution or stopping the government? |
||||
|
Civilian revolts armed with pitchforks and torches!

It would be many of the different ethic and tribal groups splitting up into armed militias and overthrowing their governments and basically causing several civil wars and mass genoicde across the regions. Central asia is a bomb ready to go off.
