The split-screen settings are determined by the TV you're on:

If you're on an HDTV or a monitor with a widescreen aspect ratio (16:9 or 16:10), your split-screen will be side-by-side.

If you're on an SDTV or a monitor with a normal aspect ratio (4:3 or 5:4), your split-screen will be top and bottom.
