As the player approaches Achenar's bridge to the Lakehouse, there is a section of the bridge that is lifted up, away from the platform. From a step or a cick (not a klik, that's a whole different distance) away, that section looks very much like a giant hand, raised with palm outward in a "stay away" gesture.
But I haven't found where anyone has commented about the hand being most likely a FEMALE hand. Statistically, most women have an index finger that is longer than their ring finger, while for men it is just the opposite: most men have a ring finger that is longer than their index finger. The log drawbridge has a longer index finger than ring finger. Discussion? Speculation? Comments? |

If my image is what you are talking about, I have a theory.
I do not remember seing a cloth line in the D'ni universe so I conclude that they do not wash their cloths very often and the same goes for body cleaniless.(never saw a bathroom) Their women have long hairs like Catherine and over time, I bet their ears are full of earmites. Because it is an old race, there was some genitic changes and their index got longer so that they could scratch the inside of their ears. How's that for an explanation ? (I do not remember seing Q-Tips either) If ever you play Myst 5, take a good look at Yeesha's hands. This message has been edited. Last edited by: nanoukmetal, |

No, it's not the hand she's talking about
You must have missed them. |

Yep I sure did miss those Q-Tips.
Edit Ok I have found the other one. My image was the left side hand and the one down the path to the old memory chamber is the right side hand. My strange theory still hold. Left hand for the left ear and right hand for the right ear. This message has been edited. Last edited by: nanoukmetal, |

Not sure I explained that the hand I described (logs, drawbridge) is on Haven?
The one you're showing - which I haven't seen yet - has its pinky worn or broken off down almost to the first joint, so who knows whether it once had a longer ring finger as well. |

How about, you showing us an image ? |

How do I do that? I can do the screencap, but how do I post it?

Because we cannot post an image directly in a post from a computer, you will first need to use an image Hosting site. Photobucket is one of the many possibilities. You can have a small but limited free account over there. See their FAQ page and click any topic on the left hand side for more infos... http://photobucket.com/faq?catID=29 To post an image you will need a link that will be similar to [ IMG] http//........[ /IMG] For a better understanding, use the quote button on my above post with the hand image and see how an [img] link looks like. (do not click the "post now" box. Just close it by clicking the "X" button, top right |

OK, I'm working on it.

OK, this is the Hand from 2 clicks away, in the swamp.

And a closer view (obviously I haven't learned how to properly edit my images yet

Have you tried removing all the white surroundings with MS Paint ? I did. (plus a slight enhancement with the free Photo Editor IrfanView (for Windows) Btw, that hand looks normal to me. It is a right hand facing you. (the thumb is on the right side) |

Oh, yours looks nice! I didn't know Paint would crop off the edges of its page. And the enhancement is noticeably better too.
It is normal. But notice the length of the index finger compared to the ring finger? The index finger is either the same or just slightly longer than the ring finger (or we could say the second digit is just slightly longer than the fourth digit), which is usually a female hand. A male hand usually has an index finger that is noticeably shorter than the ring finger (the second digit is significally shorter than the fourth digit). In context, all I want to know is why Achenar modeled a female hand to make his drawbridge, instead of copying his own hand - which most likely has a shorter index finger. Out of context, I'm curious about which graphic designer copied her own hand instead of finding a male hand to use as a model. This message has been edited. Last edited by: LynComeLately, |

Tricky, tricky!
But I decline to answer. You are not showing me hands that are displayed flat, straight, palm outward, and fingers together like the one I am evaluating. The studies that have been done have actually measured the digits, I can merely observe and compare. |
